Tower Records no more

Complete liquidation of ALL stores starting today. I am not sure how cheap those CD/DVD/SACD going to be. Actually it's a sad news since I shopped SACD online with Tower a lot, in the past few years.

Apparently they haven't paid their inventories since August, to the tune of $210MM and three major records distributors stopped shipping new stock since then.

That sucks. I always preview cd songs on their website before making purchases on new material. Maybe I can get some good deals now.

Their prices always seemed to be higher than other places here in town.

I agreee that they were usually higher priced than other shops. We have Newbury Comics in this area and they're usually cheaper than almost everyone for CDs and DVDs. Or at least competitive enough taht I'll shop there over the bigger chains.

I think more and more of these t ypes of stores are going to go the way of the dodo though.

That's too bad. They were a decent source for cheap new vinyl releases. We don't have a store locally but I still hate to see a brick and mortar close it's doors.

We have a local store, Millenium Music, that charged a membership. Benefits included membership prices AND allowed one to listen to any CD before purchase. One could also return the CD within a certain period of time and be subject to a 10 or 15 percent restocking fee. I was willing to pay a bit more for a disk to make sure I liked it first. They have discontinued that membership deal and are now a much smaller, normal operation. Must not be viable....

I agree Bob! Virgin Records on Newbury St is also closing. I went in & picked up a couple of CD's they were marked down 30%. So instead of paying $16.99for Charo's cd, I paid 11.99!

I refuse to pay 16.99 for a cd that only has 10 songs on it! CD prices have continuosly gone up year after year...WHY? The equipment that it gets played on has come down dramatically year after year.

I buy the bulk of my cds used @ Newbury Comics, CD Spins & Looney Tunes.

If they sold cd's at reasonable prices they would sell a lot more of them.

Just got back from Tower. Picked up some vinyl and a CD (Calexico w/ Iron & Wine - In The Reins and Iron & Wine Woman King) and paid around $20. Everything else was still ridiculously overpriced. Probably a good time to get a yourmusic account

You know what, some of you cheap mofo's really disgust me. A store (business) like Tower Records is (was) a rare thing these days because they STOCK just about every CD/LP made and will order anything for you, you can listen to anything before you buy it and they will work with you on returns. Not to mention the sales staff are all music freaks and know their stuff. Their stores are (were) a great place to spend a few hours or the day shopping for new music and yet some of you bitch about their high prices. JHC, so what if it costs a buck or two or even three dollars more!?! You will, more than likely, have the item for the rest of your life. Figure out what it will cost you over the span of 20, 30, 40 years or more. Ain't that effing much, is it!?!

What a shame it is to lose a great store like that, RIP Tower Records. I will miss you.

I was going to selectively quote you but this is so poetic I have to leave it complete. Many of us have fond memories of afternoons/evenings spent listening at TR then buying or ordering. Back in the day "brick & mortar" meant something else. Everything I ever bought from TR (8 track, vinyl, cd, vcd, sacd) are still good.

I stopped going to Tower a few years ago, but up until then I did spend a lot of money there. There are convenient stores to my house and a movie theater I go to, and to where I work downtown, but I predicted their business model was doomed because of internet availability. Not because of MP3 or iTunes downloads, but because of the ability to research and preview tracks. Not because of price, because they always had a sale of some sort going on and were competitive for new releases. However, even with the huge stock of CD's available, no store could stock everything I was interested in finding. It was fun to browse (the staff at most stores looked a halloween freak show :D), but quite often I would go to a store looking for a less well known jazz CD and find they didn't have it.

Another problem I have is that I have so many CD's/LP's/SACD's I have a hard time remembering what issue of them I have and don't. It's much more convenient to order online after reading reviews and previewing tracks, seeing what's already in the collection here, then ordering. Once I put an order in, Amazon has the item to my doorstep in two days with the subscription "prime" shipping membership.
