I have a co-worker that I am helping set up his modest HT. He has chosen an Onkyo HT S790 in a box and he wants to also have an additional set of speakers (2) on the patio. The receiver in the HT does not have a second zone so how does he do this? I have never done it myself as I prefer to hear nature outside so I was not much help to him in this area. Here is the back of the Onkyo receiver:

On that model it looks like you can only add Speaker B, so add the patio speaker on this output. You can only have music for HT or Patio not both.

Actually you should be able to have sound to both, just not different sounds. (i.e. if they forget to turn off the patio set, everyone in the neighborhood will know what movie they are watching...)

Been there, done that! :D

The whole neighborhood got to hear "Ray" at about 1:30 in the morning.

Where ? How does he hook them up? Sorry but I have no clue. I only see where the 7.1 go.

here is a link to the manual for that system. (http://63.148.251.135/redirect_service.cfm?type=own_manuals&file=HT-R540_En_web.pdf)

On page 19 it states how to hook up the "B" speakers. Important notes are:

When speaker B is active, Speaker A will only output 5.1. (as two channels are going elsewhere)

Speaker B will only work with analog sources. (so the neighborhood will not hear the movie, but will hear the cd's, Tapes, or radio station) provided she listens to CD's through an analog connection and not the digital connection of her DVD player.

Speaker B is hooked up to the cheap looking spring terminals (under the normal speaker hookups).

Okay thanks for that. I feel silly because I am totally telling him how to set up his HT and then when he asked me about this ....crickets!:D
