Checked on the shipping cost, and it's only $12.94 per speaker to here in the Show Me state.

....so we're talking $125 for a pair shipped ! Not bad.

We actually moved our R30's (same speaker components, different driver placement, though) to the front of our HT.
It was my kids' idea; I had Monitor 40's up front (my hearing kind rolls off the highs a little), but ......well, like I told my kids, they're not just a couple of pretty faces !

These are a good deal. No, they're not LSI's, but it's a good way to get your foot in the door. :)

How do these compare with the M20s? I heard a pair at CC last weekend and they sounded pretty good. They didn't knock my socks off, but nothing at CC ever does.

I'd be using them in a primarily HT setup to replace Monior 10 series II as the fronts.

It's obviously a great price, but I don't understand why Polk would continue to sell to a place that whores their products out so much. How likely is it that other retailers would want to carry the R300's and promote them as a nice speaker to buy for $400 (or whatever MSRP is) when they could potentially sell another manufacturer's speaker that wouldn't have the price erroded so much? While this does get Polks into homes that otherwise wouldn't have bought them, it seems to me less retailers will carry Polk or carry less of Polk's lineup.

Has anyone heard these yet? Just curious how they would compare to the old r30s

I paid the totally sick price of 100 dollars for a pair of these (plus 25 dollars shipping) and I like them.

At first I didn't really think they sounded that good, but I think because they were still cold (I hooked them up minutes after the DHL guy delivered them) it hampered the true quality of the sound.

Hey, for 400 bucks, these speakers are damn good...........for a 100 they're a gem. You just cannot go wrong.

Darn, they're $200 each at local B&M Fry's, shipping for me brings the cost of each to $76 after tax.

Still worth it versus M20's at $110 (Circuit City)?

Hi All,

I am new to the forum. I just ordered a pair of Polk R300's, a Polk CSi25 center, and a pair or Polk R15's from outpost.com. I couldn't resist as the prices are crazy and just plain unbelievable! I will use them in my soon to be theater area basement. They will likely be powered with a Denon 987.
I had planned to spend $1500 on a 5.1 system of this quality. Now I can get a bigger Hsu or SVS sub (not a polk, I know).
I am thinking of adding a pair of in-ceilings to match these for the last two channels of 7.1. What do you recommend? Does anyone have any comments on my purchase? For $220 plus shipping, I doubt I could do 5.0 better:D

Thanks,

Pat

I picked up on this sale about three weeks ago...also snagged a pair of R150 for $50.00.

I used the R300's to replace a VERY tired pair of RT16's...what a drastic change. Still adjusting...the sub volume, that is.

I bought the same configuration as you. I actually bought a pair of M10's at Circuit City which I'm going to return now that my R15's have arrived (along with the CSI25). The R300's should arrive this week. Considering what they were replacing (seriously has anyone owned Jensen 3120's? actually i like them, but the sony center channel and bookshelves had to go), I am ecstatic about the upgrades. I am a subwoofer upgrade away from being in entry-level 5.1 greatness with my 7 year old Kenwood VR-407 receiver. Given my 25x18 great room I'm looking at a Velodyne 15" or if I'm feeling really randy, a HSU.

Much thanks to this forum, avsforum.com, and outpost.com.

I picked up a pair of the R300 at Fry's last night to replace my 17 year old 5 Jr+ Monitors. I haven't had a chance to dial them in yet but they sound pretty good, especially for $100 a pair! I was hoping to use them w/o a stand but they're a little too short for that. An 18 inch stand would bring the tweeter up to a better level. One thing I don't understand w/ these speakers in particular, why is the tweeter placed below the mid range driver? On a short speaker like this, wouldn't it be more appropriate to place the driver producing the most directional sound on top, closer to ear level?

Do yourself a favor and check out svs subs - you can't go wrong with any of them. I opted for their entry-level sub over a Velo & HSU, and it's a killer!

Wow, that is cheap! They remind of Mission speakers, aesthetically that is.

Yeah I'm actually considering SVS too, but considering how little I paid for 5 speakers I'm having trouble justifying the sub purchase right now. Having said that I'll probably stop by Fry's on the way home from work to see if they have anything I can add in pairs in the outpost.com price range to justify an additional purchase of a 7.1 receiver. Can't...stop...purchasing...

Thanks for the rec, I'm trying to figure out the best balance of budget and performance for a decidedly non-audiophile 100% HT setup.

What would they sound like compared to my Monitor 40's I have up front? Would they sound better, worse, the same? Also I have a CS 1 for center. How would they sound as far as timbre matched goes? I'm looking to upgrade and not downgrade. Would it really be a good deal for me?

Don't even think about it, you will be wasting money. I know its only 120 bucks, but in your case, its not much of an upgrade. Just save up your money and get something worth upgrading.

I see in your other thread how you been complaining about the monitor 40s, I can't believe you think these(a downgrade, exception they are tower speaks) are the answers:) .Upgrade, don't downgrade

I must agree. I replaced my RT5's with cherry R50's from Fry's because I figured I was getting a newer tower with 2 - 6-1/2" bass drivers for only $163.00 including shipping. Well, they're only marginally better, if at all. The bass is better, but I already have a capable sub, so bass shouldn't an issue. I would have been better off waiting until the rti's prices drop when the new series is released. Now I have the wrong center channel & a mix of cherry & black speakers.

Oh, well, it's hard to chase the "upgrade bug" away, especially when the replacements are so inexpensive!

I just got my R300's and took a quick two channel listen. They sound pretty nice, but certainly need a subwoofer.

The website lists that they come with carpet spikes and neither of mine did:confused: Did you guys get the spikes? I have an e-mail into Polk to check that out. They seem a little tippy on carpet without them.

Look on the bottom of the foam end caps...that's where they are on the RTis, hopefully the Rs as well...or call Polk.

I thought I looked good enough, but I'll take another look when I get home. I got the little plastic pads for the center and bookshelves:confused:
Still no word from polk on that.

Got mine today too, no spikes.

I also took the plunge and ordered the following as an upgrade from the RM6600:

- R300 floorstanding (black)
- R150 bookshelf (black)
- CSi25 center (black)

The CSi25 came with rubber feet, but I didn't see any carpet spikes with the R300's. I was disappointed by this too. I guess they could have been hidden somewhere in the box and I missed them, but I don't think I would have missed that.

I'll check again when I get home. Has anyone gotten a response from Polk customer service on whether the R300's are supposed to include carpet spikes?

Any word back from Polk support?

Here is the reply I received:

Unfortunately the R300 does not come with Carpet Spikes.
I will have our web person remove that from our web-site.
We apologize for the incorrect information that you saw.

If you need the Feet Glides that come with the R300 (RF1072-1) we will
be happy to send them to you if you will send your mailing address.

Thank You,

I did reply to her with a request for recommendations on any spikes that would work as I really do want to use spike. I specifically asked about the Rti spikes.
I will post back with her reply.

Patnshan - thanks for the update. Its disappointing that the spikes aren't included. I have no idea how much they'll be to purchase separately...but would rather not have to shell out extra money for them. But I guess that's the only alternative at this point.

Will look forward to hearing the response from Polk about separate carpet spikes.

Thats nothing compared to what they were clearing the R50s out for. $59 + shipping each. I bought 6 of them plus the Csi25($69) All in all, I spent $533 for six R50 and one Csi25 to complete a heck of a home theater system. I don't think Fry's going to do this agian though. They're clearing out the JBLs now instead of the Polks.

I received response from Polk that there are no spikes for the R300's. They said that they are not designed to be used with spikes and that they have heard of no problems with the speakers being tippy without them.

Thanks for posting the response from Polk support. I find it interesting that they are not designed to be used with spikes. I wonder what constitutes a floorstanding speaker that would make it "not designed to be used with spikes" ?

I have carpet that is older and not exactly evenly laid out (the previous owner did the finishing of the basement), so I guess I could email some pictures of the speakers to Polk to show them that they are tippy. Maybe then they'd believe me.

Thanks again for posting the update. Guess I'll just have to cross my fingers that no guests, or probably more likely to be my dogs, bump into one of the R300 speakers and knocks it over.
