Hey all,
I have a set of Polk RM6801 5.1 surround sound speakers. I have a KLH R5100 receiver that is going (there's a short in it or something where there will be a LOUD bang and then it won't work for anywhere from 5-30 minutes).
Can anyone recommend a decent receiver for my speakers? I don't need anything that can support Hi Def as I don't plan on buying any Hi Def TVs for a number of years, but S-Video is definite. Basically I plan on plugging in my DVD/VCR player (S-Video/RCA), my TiVo (S-Video) and my game system (PS2 now, Nintendo Wii in a couple of weeks - S-Video or RCA). I'm looking to spend no more than $300 if possible. Thanks!

Just about anything from Denon, Harman Kardon, Yamaha, Onkyo, B&K, Pioneer Elite, or Marantz would be good.
Since you don't need component video connections I would be tempted to look for an older Marantz, or Denon on the used market.
You would probably be wise to do a basic search of the forums as well. There have been many threads in the past on this very subject.

Welcome and Ditto. Just figure out if you want 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1. You can find some decent receivers that will more than do justice for your current speakers in the used market for $300.00.

Thanks. I found a nice Onkyo that I'm going to check out tomorrow that is in my price range. Here's a really stupid question (and is going to show how little i know about this stuff). Can I hook up my 5.1 speakers to a 7.1 receiver?

Check out Denon as well. If you look around, you can pick one up with a lot of s-video for around $250 on Ebay if you don't mind last years or refurbs. Try these out!

You can hook up your 5.1 speakers to a 7.1 receiver no problem. http://www.image-in.co.uk/category.php/id,404/
I like my Denon, never a problem.

Hey wingnut,
What time do you turn the lights off and ignore snoozing sounds? Who wouldn't want to be by to get your stuff....Kidding of course, but man why do the full monty? Enjoy, nice system.

Check out the Harmon Kardon refrubs on ebay sold directly from H/K. You can find a great value on a very nice sounding receiver. They are like brand new and come with a waranty. Always get one with pre-amp outputs, so you can always add power amps down the road.

welcom tylor,
My experience with onkyo has led me to a denon reciever. The 2 (two) onkyos that I have enjoyed, for what they were worth stopped working, to the month the warranty period was up. My denon delivers more confidence to me, I guess out of ignorance, but I do smile every time I turn it on. It sounds so much better then my recievers of past. By no means I believe that my denon will be what I end up with in the end, but it seems to do the job for now. It manages my polks fine.

Thanks all. To let everyone know, I went out today and bought an Onkyo TX-SR504S. So far, the difference between my old one and this one is night and day!
