Hello guys!
I haven't been around lately due to travel back from Iraq and family issues. Long story short, my wife was recently in the hospital for an aneurism. Everything is well now(thank God), she came home yesterday afternoon.
polksda-
Yes, I'm mostly setup for HT. I have the Toshiba XA1 and the Sammy BR player soon to be replaced with the Panny. You are more than welcome to bring the PS3 as we can compare to see if there is a difference at all?
Anything else I've missed out on in the last few weeks??
Merry Christmas everyone!

If there's still room, I'd like to attend. Bloomington's only about 45 minutes away.
I realize that this is primarily an audio event, but just wanted to float this idea:
The host said that he's primarily set up for HT use. If there's any interest in A/B-ing the new HD formats (both audio and video) I can provide a Toshiba HD-A1 (HD-DVD) and Sony PS3 (Blu-Ray) as well as 20+ BR titles and 60+ HD-DVD titles... by then I'm likely to have a boatload more of both formats...
Don't worry about bringing the PS3, I picked one up a few days ago.:)
You are more than welcome to bring over some BR titles though.
I have a few titles as of now, BHD, Tears of the Sun, Pearl Harbor, and Ice Age.

Seems like most folks who are "serious" about HD are ultimately picking up a player of each flavor; only way to get the best of both worlds until someone comes up with a universal player... doesn't look like either format is going away anytime soon.
Even the older titles on the 2 formats that people often complain about being soft (Total Recall-BR, Stargate-BR, 1976 King Kong-French HD-DVD, The Fugitive-HD-DVD, amongst others) are *still* leaps and bounds above what the SD-DVDs look like. Contrary to what many people think, releasing something in HD doesn't "magically" refilm and remaster everything to make it look like today's CGI-ized films...
But I digress... between the 2 formats I'm now over 100 titles, so I'll have plenty to bring; will check in as we get closer to the event, so that I don't duplicate titles you already own. :)
MikeC78
01-02-2007, 03:39 PM
Yep, you pretty much nailed it right on the head!
You sure do have a lot of titles, we'll compare like you said as we get closer to the event.

Tonight is the first time I ever noticed this thread. I may be able to attend if there's space left and if there's nothing going on at work that weekend. Summer is the heart of construction season, so I'm usually pretty busy. I won't be able to say until much later if I will be able to make it, but if I do, I could carry several people from Chicago in my Durango, or, since I work at O'Hare airport, I could probably pick up anyone who's flying in...

First of all, am I too late to participate in this? Secondly, someone earlier in the thread wanted to compare some pre/pro's and wanted to know if anyone had an Outlaw Audio pre/pro. I believe they wanted to cmpare Rotel and Nad maybe? I will have the Model 990 at this date.. Last of all, would anyone be attending this that is from TN? Car pool maybe?

Not from TN, (only about 45 min away from the event) but I wanted to compare the pre/pro's. If you could bring the outlaw, we will have the Rotel (opus has one) and the NAD (I have the T163). Would make for a fun shootout to see what we prefer with the LSi speakers....
Come on up...

You are about 45 mins from TN? Well, do to my driving situation at the moment, I cant drive, (until 2016) I would have to catch a ride with someone. Or, I could fly up there.. Is there an airport close? O'hare the closest?

Sorry, I am 45min away from Bloomington where it is being held.
There are 2 airports (of any size) closer than ohare (but you will probably have to fly through O'hare or St. Louis) Bloomington will be closest to the event (http://www.cira.com/) (it is being held there.) Airport code of BMI
Peoria is close as well (http://www.flypia.com/index.php) (about an hour away or so) and you could easily get a ride from there. (I can pick up you or anyone else there if needed) Airport code of PIA

I completely understand.. Well, unfortunately I drank and drove one too many times! I have had 4 DUI's in the last 5 years.. Thus, making me a habitual offender.. That is an automatic loss of license for 10 years.. I also did not consent to the chemical tests (thought this was to my benefit/ man was I wrong) and this adds an additional year to that. I have not driven for over two years to this point. To address the second portion of your question, "TennesseeOutlaw" the "Outlaw" comes from Outlaw Audio.. I just signed up for their "club" or whatever it is, and I signed up for Club Polk the same day.. Just thought it would be easier to remember..
FYI - I graduated High School with an Academics Honors Diploma. GPA 3.6
I have three years of college; however, I cant decide on a degree.
I have never been in trouble for anything in my life except of course the DUI's.
Just bad judgement calls/being in the wrong place at the wrong time/not learning my lesson the first time.
Im sure just about everyone in this forum has driven a time or two when they most definately should not have.
I hope that clarifies it up for you, and I will understand if I am not welcomed.. I havent been around on this site for very long and will not feel "86'd" for lack of a better term.. I plan on being on this site from this day forward, and if it takes time to build friendships and trust (as it should) that is not a problem with me.

Hello TennesseeOutlaw,
I would recommend you not purchasing any plane tickets as of yet. The date is tenative as of now, and might change as we get closer to June which is still quit a ways away. If you have any more questions you can PM "Halo" who is actually doing all the coordinating for this gathering. FYI, I'm just the host.;)
Also... Be advised that there is limited space to the event and the numbers might get slimmed down to a "first come, first serve" basis as we get closer. All depends upon on who bails out and who signed with my coordinator.:)
Mike

01-15-2007, 10:13 PM
Sounds good.. I had no immediate plans on buying tickets.. Just wanted to get an idea of prices.. Actually, I would be spending potential audio equipment money; nonetheless, I would love to meet everyone.. There seems to be quite a few people in this forum that are very audio savvy.. I have always had a very nice stereos and then HT's, but I am nowhere near some of you guys.. I may be up in Indiana (Hometown) around that time.. Thought if I was possibly I could catch a ride with Zombie. My hometown is about 30 mins from Louisville.. I have yet to speak with him either.. Plenty of time before the actual crunchtime, so we/I will just play it by ear.
Thanks,
Josh

I agree a very harsh lesson. No judging here. There are many in your situation who say 'eff it and drive anyways. So sounds like you are willing to take the consequences and move on.
And yes, we'd all be fibbing if we said we never drove while drinking.

You're telling me! My first one was dropped all together, so I actually have only three on my record.. Thank god I had a good lawyer everytime, cause the second, third, etc etc are felonies.. I have zero felonies and have spent no longer than time served in jail. (12-24 hours per instance)

Believe it or not, being behind the bar instead of sittin' in front of it is a very very good thing.. It keeps me from drinking.. I would love my job in a heartbeat if I was caught drinking behind the bar.. I work at a corporate owned Buffalo Wild Wings... That sh*t don't fly, and I have been there several years.. I would be gone in a blink of an eye.. We cannot even come in on our days off and drink!! (which I think is retarded) I had collegitus for several years after I stop going to college, or I wouldnt be in the situation im in now.. Not being able to drive for 11 years really sobers you up in a lot more ways than one.. I have a much better understanding of "freedoms" in which I wrongly confused with "rights." It has been tough, but I will persevere in the long run.. BTW, I just got my new K&N air filter for my scooter(LOL) and I got her up to 51 MPH!!!! Colder than hell sometimes, but ya do what ya gotta do!

My .02....
I think at this point, y'all need to clarify a few things as, time is going to start ticking away.
1. Nail down a date....if you want folks to commit, they need a no shit date.
2. Venue: I'm gathering it's in Bloomington, IL? Ok, what's the basic layout of the abode? How many demo areas available
3. Gear. What sort of setups are going to be available?
4. Logistics/lodging. The locals need to chime in with the lay of the land
I don't mean this to be critical, however, at this point I think the host(s) need to start nailing down concrete specifics. For the rest of you guys, quit dicking up the thread, It's tough enough to decipher the pertinent facts in this thread (which should be largely informational) without wading through 8 pages of pissing matches (which I'm a big fan of but a thread like this needs to stay ON TOPIC)
If I could offer any advice on hosting an event, there really isn't much to it. The biggest thing is, in my mind, is the host HAS lay out what the guests can expect. Obviously, there is flexibility in terms of gear and so forth but if people know what to expect up front, it makes for a better experience

I thought we had closed on the last weekend of June....
Hello everyone,
Please accept my apologies for not responding for such a long time as I've been busy processing out of the military(a painful process!:( ). I finally made it home lastnight after traveling in my old reliable minivan about 2100 miles, another painful process to say the least!
Now, let's straighten out the confusion on what date our great Godfather "Halo" has set for our highly anticipated gathering. The date is still set for the last weekend of June, it hasn't changed. I believe some of us got thrown off when I used the word "tenative". Not to be pessimistic, the term was used rather loosely to mean in case of any emergencies that aroused the date would change. I believe we still all concur to this date?

Everything has been discussed and brought up in this thread. Since you are too damn lazy to read through it;) , I'll reiterate myself...
1. Done. It was discussed and nailed down about a few months ago.
2. There will be at least three rigs up and running at once. I do have a finished basement which could house a few more, but then we run into a few accomodation issues... I don't have an elevator.
3. A whole bunch of gear:rolleyes: ... I'm not wading through all the pages, but it has been discussed.
4. There are several hotels close by, anything you find on the internet(by doing a search) in Bloomington is going to be close. If you find some in Normal, there will be a little more driving of maybe a few miles. Anything off of "Veteran's Parkway" will be your best bet.
Anything else I'm missing? I believe everything has been discussed, but if anyone has any questions please feel free to PM me or Halo.

Too lazy to read through it? I DID read through this CF of a thread and the REASON I made that post (about a month ago, I might add) is because A) it is a cluster and B) I'd like to see you guys have a good event. I'm actually about 75/25 on going.
1. The date was NOT set it stone
2. A lot of things had been discussed but the list of definitives was pretty short.
3. See #2
4. Well that's just great. How about for the folks that haven't the foggiest idea of what's decent, what areas to avoid etc etc. If you are going to host this event, be prepared to do a little legwork. For a good example, go back and look at the information that Mark provided about the Balitmore area for MDPF '05.
I'm not trying to be an asshole, but I've hosted two of these events (and would like to do at least one more) and I have a pretty good idea of how to pull of a good time. One of the things that you've got to realize that if you want participation, you've got to have your collective shit together which, when I made the post, didn't seem to be the case.
Personally, I want to come...however speaking for myself and for the feedback I got from folks during the run-up for CPF '04, it's hard to commit to the expense of airfare, hotels and rental cars etc unless there are concrete details.
Sorry if that gets sand in your panties but I was asked for my input and I gave it.

I can't commit to any dates as a stated earlier, and I would just need to drive down and back home again anyways. I didn't realize there was a capacity limit (maybe I didn't read that before). No, I know you do, but since space is restricted to a small number of folks I figure I shouldn't be on there when I know I can't commit to anything. :)
Trust me, this kind of schedule sucks for everything, especially vacations. :(I know, my wife works in retail. Damn near impossible to plan anything unless you do it waaaaay in advance.
A few people are up in the air, including you. I'm not going to 86 anybody until we draw close and I have to or I get a confirmation that they can't make it. :)

Sorry to hear your Friday off isn't gonna happen.
My Friday the 18th off is based on what happens that week. I'd be working into Saturday morning if things don't go well. As it is, Victor is bringing a stick to poke me with in case I make it Friday and nod off into dreamland. I'll be loading up and leaving right after I get off work Friday morning so no sleepy time. Gonna caffeine up and tough it out.

We have yet to book any hotels, but the wife and I will be heading out Friday afternoon. Probably won't stop by until Saturday, as I'll be quite tired from the 7hr drive, and it will likely be pretty late anyway.
Really looking forward to this, guys! And excited to just roam around Chicago a little bit.

I called the ESA in Bloomington (1805 S Veterans Parkway) direct at 309-662-8533 for reservations and got the same rate as going through hotels.com.
What time are you planning on leaving? Many of the Interstates around here are a mess with construction. I355 and I55 can be awful by me. Southbound I55 is a parking lot on a weekday from 5PM to 7PM just after I355.

Just booked a hotel a little nearer Chicago so that we have less distance to travel into the city for some sightseeing.
We're going to hit the road hopefully by 2pm. I work till 1, so it'll be a matter of getting home, picking up the Mrs, and getting rolling. Probably have to stop for a bite somewhere along the line. I haven't plotted out our drive, but I think we'll be taking 94 to 90? I'll have to check...

NAD pre, CinePro amp, RTi6's, and the LSi 7's.
Yamaha C-85? Toshiba 3960?
Some gear lists I received were kind of vague:
So, if you are planning to attend and you don't see your gear in the list let me know so I can correct it.
I have McLoki down for the LSi 7's & heiney9 for the LSi9's.

My brother was originally going to come as well, but he can't make it so take him off the confirmed list.
Is anybody going to be disappointed if I don't bring my newly modded 5b's? It's either the LSi 9's OR the 5b's, and I've decided HTRookie will not let me in unless I have the 9's in tow. Have fun everyone, I'll check back for the thread that you all put up about Chicago '07. I'm sure it'll be a blast.
Maybe in '08 I'll make it and I'll make up for my absence this year. Ya'll have fun now... Victor especially since I've seen that he's been so hard at work getting this PF 07 together... he has my respect.
Enjoy guys.

Here's a funny little note that is making really look forward to tomorrow... I was chatting with one of the guys at the company I was visiting today over lunch. He asked what I had going on for the weekend, so I brought up the Polkfest. He said, "I used to be way into that audiophile stuff before too. In fact, I'm building a media room and am going to put in a nice Bose Lifestyles system" "I know they are expensive, but they sound great..."
:) WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I just smiled and said, "cool"

We just had one incident (that I know of...) Some sparks were seen but nothing was damaged ;)
It was another great day today; lots of shoot outs..LSi9's vs LSi7's, LSi9's vs LSi15's, LSi15's vs SDA 1C's, LSi15's vs Von Schweikert VR2's....
We compared the Sony Modwright universal player with the Raysonic; Modwright owners said it sounds better....but for some strange reason we heard the Raysonic all day:rolleyes:  :p :p ;)
Doug (dkg999) brought a pair of Monitor 10's with the silk tweeters that not only sound great, but they look absolutely brand new; not one scratch on them.
Thanks again to Mike and Annie for having us. They put up with us and fed us; great hosts.
Thanks to Frank for the cables; everyone got something.
Thanks to Rich (Scompracer) for being the "official" installer; great job. Victor's wife came in a close second :)
I won the Isonic...thanks to Polk; it will go to my daughter's room.

Great day. I heard some wild stuff. The SDA's about made me cry. The V2's were stellar and I think the lsi15's can hold their own against some pretty stiff competition. Mikes Home Theater demo was breathtaking. We listened to Blackhawk Down and Flight of the Phoenix at bonecrushing levels:D WOW. Let me say that agian, WOW.
Thanks to Mike and Annie, although Mike is a little scary. Let me put it this way, If you are ever about to go to war make damn sure Mike is on your side;) there is a smiley mike, don't kill me:D

Norm had warned me not to demo the ModWright 9100 with the 6900 tubes. Too much detail scares the hell out of people at first! :p :D Your Raysonic sounded fantastic Ricardo! And that Cool Blue glow!
What a great time. I have to say it again; Annie and Mike were the most wonderful hostest and host! Thank you so much for opening your beautiful home to us! Not only does their home theatre SOUND and FEEL awesome (walls vibrate in the entire house) the 50” Panasonic display raises and lowers into the media center via remote control! They have the greatest neighbors too. No cops were called and it was LOUD.
Thanks to Victor and Jessica for handling details!
It was a great time with wonderful Polkies. Thanks go out to all who showed up and all who brought gear! Thanks to Normanality for providing two pairs of speakers and an audio rack!
Opus brought enough beer for 75 people so like good Polkies, we started to drink like 75 people. None of that cheap Edelweiss stuff either! All the top brands!
There was plenty of gear and speakers to hear. Some SDA 1C’s changed hands but remain in the CP family.

Special thanks to everyone else who brought gear and made this happen!!! Thanks to HTrookie(Ricardo) for being very entertaining, this guy is hillarious!!:D :D
I still can't believe my ears after this weekend!! SDA 1C's(I believe?), where very sweet sounding, Von Schweikert(sp) VR2's were absolutely amazing!! I couldn't believe the sound these put out and they are a small tower. I still can't believe that these didn't sell all weekend...
The Innersound Eros speakers!! Once in the sweet spot, you did NOT want to move!!! I'm still kicking myself in the rear for not grabbing these!:(

Mike,
Thanks again for the hospitality. Also, thank you for the spinal adjustment. The dual-SVS's were just what it needed. Seriously, man... That is some insane output.
Michele and I had a great time. I especially enjoyed the VR2-LSi15 shootout. The VR2's had a tighter, more controlled bass and more airry highs, but overall to my ears, it was a close match. Half the time I liked the VR2's better and on certain songs, the LSi's. Really, another great example of the Lsi15's fantastic performance at their pricepoint. (VR2's retail and twice the price)
It was also a pleasure to meet such a nice group of people. This forum is truely a special place.

It was a pleasure to meet you! :) I had a great time and I don't think I woul've changed a thing all weekend. The hospitality was second to none. The food was outstanding. The company was exceptional. The gear was plentiful. Had a GREAT time!
HUGE thanks got out to both the sponsors - Polk Audio & Signal Cable. Can not thank either of these companies enough. I'd also like to thank Normanality for his contributions as well.
I will contact Justin ASAP about the photos. Hang tight everybody, I'm on it :)
I will give Paul a call tomorrow am before or after PT & get him the list for the shirts and HTrookie's I-Sonic (Congrats!)
BIG thanks, from me, my sister, and the millions living with MS for the contributions :) This truely is THE BEST forum out there - BAR NONE!
And now for a few words from my lovely wife Jessica:
I would again like to thank our lovely hosts annie and mike thanks for your wonderful hospitality. You have a lovely home and your home theater is amazing and if anyone gets to steal the subwoofer its going to be me!!!!
I would also like to thank all who attended and brought their gear with the
comparsions I really learned alot this weekend. I really enjoyed meeting everyone your all wonderful people. I always wondered why he spent so much time on this forum but now I get it He couldn't have picked a nicer group of people to spend time with. Hope to do it again next year!

I'm jumping in late also! It's been a long day getting stuff done so I can leave for Boston early Monday morning!
Mike and Annie - we could not have asked for better hosts! You two were absolutely fantastic! And your HT system absolutely rocks! From the dual SVS to the HD display, it was fantastic.
Victor, Rich, Ricardo - thanks so much for setting this up. I had a great time and look forward to future get togethers! I'm probably forgetting someone on the thank you's for putting the event together, forgive me if I left anyone out!
Polk Audio and Signal Cable - thanks for supporting our event. It's the little things like this that drive customer loyalty!
I had a great time and enjoyed meeting everyone and listening to all the gear that we had. On the way home I hit a pretty good sized pothole on I39, and the next thing I hear from Brock is "well there go a set of drivers ........ in the Monitor 10's". I tried to miss the big bumps after that
Thanks again to everyone involved for a fantastic event! Doug

Gear (I heard alot and only remember some of it so bear with me)-
Nakamichi CA5 - SS preamp. Pretty old (maybe 15 or 20 years?) Sounded AWESOME. I liked the sound of the tube pre-amps that were playing, but switching to the SS Nak made everything sound so clean. I think it may have been my favorite of the pre-amps that I heard.
LSi7 VS LSi9 -
Downstairs the 7's were killing. For some reason, in that room - the 9's midbass hump was greatly exagerated and the 7's were just sounding better. We brought both speakers upstairs into the main 2 channel area both running off some killer gear and the 9's proceeded to crush the 7's with everything that was played. I will state that the 7's were my rear speakers in my HT and the wood sides had been removed. I do not know if that would have made any difference or not, but wanted to throw that disclaimer out there. Without the sides on them and when next to the 9's, the 7's look really small. (like give a guy a complex small) Anyway - If you are going to purchase the smaller LSi speakers the smart money says purchase the 9's. If you get the big mid-bass hump and it is exagerated to the point it blows the experience, return them and get the 7's.
9's vs 15's -
This was kind of surprising as many chose the 9's over the 15's (not I mind you, but many others.... :) ) to each their own, but they are both great sounding speakers.
Eros something or others -
Very nice detailed speaks, but just not my cup of tea. Almost the same as most of the electrostatics that I have heard. I was bi-amping them with the cinepro and they were really nice (and darn loud). We tried bridging the panels (It should have worked) and was met with sparks, elevated blood pressure and silence. In the end nothing was hurt, but that may have been my first and last attempt to bridge with the cinepro. (It did sound nice right up to the point it stopped working though... :o  ) I was left with understanding the draw of electrostatics, but not really wanting a set.
Von Schweikert VR2's (I cut and pasted the name from MikeC's post so blame him if spelling is wrong.. :))
Anyway - these speakers are great. They may be the most detailed non-brite speaker I have heard so far. They are really pretty small towers (shorter than the 15's) but the sound the produce is great. Showing my love of two channel, the entire time I heard them I was thinking how awesome 5 of them would sound in a HT environment...:p Very, Very nice speaker. If you get the chance - you should really try to demo a pair.
Raysonic CD player -
This was about the coolest looking piece of equipment there. It is a tube CD player with blue lights, a clear top and you have to dismatle the darn thing every time you put a CD into it. While the name does sound like a brand you would pick up at K-Mart, the sound it produced was strictly top shelf. It was awesome and looked incredible (to put it in movie terms it looked like a cross between star trek and the fast and the furious).
The Modwright did sound nice, but it just looked like a cd player. How booring is that? The Raysonic looked like it could blow apart in a spectacular light show every time you saw someone changing the CD in it.... (it never did blow apart, but I bet it would look spectacular doing so... :D)
Mikes dual SVS HT -
It's just rediculous. There is so much bass I think his house may have started as a ranch and he just inflated the roof to form a second level during Black Hawk Down. The HD sources on a 50" screen are so worth it and everything looked fantastic. We did do a quick shootout between my NAD pre/Pro and his Pioneer AVR. It was much closer than I thought it would be with the NAD giving just a little extra detail. The added benefit of having HDMI switching on the AVR would make it a tough choice if I had to recommend one or the other to someone. (to 85% of the people I would have to recommend the Pioneer just for the flexability of HDMI and the uncompressed sound available when running HD sources.
The rest -
The beer, cheesecake and brats were all great. The company was awesome. All the amps sounded great (even my HT based Cinepro right up until it went into protection mode) and everyone seemed to have a very good time. All the equipment that showed up working left that way and there was little structural damage caused to Mikes house. (any damage there was caused by his dual SVS setup)
That is about as much as I remember.... Any specific questions just ask and I (or others) will be glad to chime in.

Eros something or others -
InnerSound Eros MK II's.
Nobody’s fault but mine….even lack of sleep and alcohol are no excuse for the stupid mistake I made. I should have stopped the demo with your amp when I saw the clip lights going off. The protective circuitry of the Cinepro did not like the variable load the ESL panel was presenting, which is a faster changing and much broader range than what conventional speakers present. When an amp is clipping, the amp just isn’t as dynamic, which is what I felt and someone in the room commented on. Bridging the amp made it worse. Your amp was just not designed to run an ESL panel, while the InnerSound/Sanders amps are.
I don’t know about the design of the Cinepro, but usually when an amp clips, protective circuitry switches the power on and off to the output transistors. Most likely, that resulted in a high transient voltage spike being sent to the panels. There is a 50 to 1 transformer in the speaker that drives the ESL panels. If a high voltage spike were sent it would be magnified 50 times which resulted in the light show. The light show was caused by the right ESL panel arcing at the bottom where the wires from the 50:1 transformer connect.
Fortunately, your amp is fine and Norm’s speaker worked fine after it was reconnected to the InnerSound/Sanders amps. I sent an email to Roger Sanders (the designer of the InnerSound speaker) inquiring about the incident to see what he has to say.
How booring is that?

It shouldn't have been clipping (when the "issue" happened anyway) the volume was way below what it had been with just straight bi-amping.
For those curious, we biamped the panels with my Cinepro amp. I mentioned that I had never seen the clip lights come on with my Cinepro but they are supposed to be there. We had the speaks cranking pretty good and I was surprised that the clip lighs were flashing on the channels driving the panels but not on the channels driving the woofers. That was when the bright idea came to me to bridge the channels driving the panels and keep the woofers drived the way they were (1 channel each). (six channel amp remember, 2 bridged used 4 channels and 2 normal for the bass panels used the other two) We had it at what I would describe as a moderate level (no where near as loud as it was when just biamping) and there was a spark in the speaker followed by silence from the amp. The amp had another light I had never seen on before (a red "protection" light) glowing. We shut everything down, hooked the Cinepro to some more conventional speakers and it played fine. Hooked the InnerSound speakers up to the Sanders amp and the right channel did not sound right. (crap!!!!) found out someone had flipped the light switch controlling the outlet the right InnerSound was plugged into (killing external power to the panel) - turned the switch back on and the speaker was back in business, sounding great. The Cinepro hung its head in shame and left the demo area... :o
I think must have had something to do with bridging the amp. I am wondering if even though the speaker hits 2 ohms at 20k hz, if it dips below 4 ohms at places under that. The Cinepro is stable to 2 ohms and can be bridged at 4, but I wonder if the speaker was just to much of a load for it when bridged. Anyway - like you said, everything appears to be working fine all the way around, I am just not used to (or knowledgeable about) the kind of load that electrostatic speakers present. It did sound nice while it was playing though.... :)

Just giving you a hard time. :p

Oh and by the way...I listened to the 7B's (with Peerless) last night, and after hearing them I really wish I could have picked them up on Friday....these 30 years old babies would have beaten more than one of those "new technology" speakers at the fest. I heard Noel's 7A's a couple of years ago and since then I had this "urge" to own a pair with the peerless. Now I know why.

Michael, IIRC bridging an amplifier causes it to see half the load impedance that it would when it is not bridged so that could cause the protective circuitry to really go nuts. I shouldn't have said your amp was clipping, just that the protection circuit was kicking in. An 8 Ohm speaker can range from 2 to 50 Ohms. An ESL panel can range from 2 to 112 Ohms. I don't know enough about protective circuitry to speak in absolutes, but perhaps the panels are outside the parameters of the Cinepro protection circuitry? You could check with Cinepro and see what they say. I know your never gonna own a pair of ESL's,:p :D but it might answer the question.
It is hard for me to condemn the speakers as Norm never had a problem with them and they play fine with the InnerSound/Sanders ESL amps. There are plenty of discussions out there about amps that work well with the difficult loads Maggies, InnerSounds, ML,'s, etc. can place on an amp and its protective circuitry. The only reason Norm ended up with two pairs of Eros MK II's (and wants to sell these for a very fair price) was to get the second design bass amp. You cannot purchase the second design bass amp with active crossover seperately, only the ESL panel amps are available. When a pair of Eros MKII speakers popped up on the 'gon with the second design bass amp, he bought them.
The second design bass amp (like the one Victor had at the fest) is very desirable over the first design. The second design is more powerful at 600WPC @ 4 Ohms versus the first design at 200WPC @ 4 Ohms. It also provides remote control of the active crossover along with output volume so you can connect a source directly to it.
I can smile (a little:p ) about it now, but at the time I was very concerned about what might have happened to a pair of speakers belonging to a friend. I couldn't see who was where in the room, but maybe the flash caused someone to jump (a very appropriate reaction) and they bumped the switch controlling the outlet the right speaker was plugged into. Scary moments, but life would be boring without a little excitement now and then.
No way should the Cinepro hang its head in shame. There are many amps out there that just don't get along with ESL's.

Sorry to chime in so late, it certainly isn’t a reflection on one of the most enjoyable couple of days I’ve had in awhile. I got all caught up in the SDA’s yesterday and last evening that I just didn’t allow time for my comments on the Chicago PF.
First off, it’s been said before but, a big THANK YOU to Mike and Annie for opening up their home to a bunch of stangers. Your hospitality, kindness and tolerance was simply awesome. The South has got nothing on you guys. Big thanks to Opus (Kevin) for providing all the liquid refreshment, a very nice selection of beer; it was appreciated.
I also can’t say enough about the goodies Frank from Signal Cable sent along. I will be a customer for life because this is the kind of stuff that makes a lasting impression and I’ve already told a handful of people what a generous offering you supplied. You can bet out of the 2 dozen or so people I can “spread the word” amongst you’ll be making some sales. I was really disappointed no one from Polk could make it, but the t-shirts will make up for that. I’ve heard great things about both Al and Paul and perhaps I’ll get to meet them in the future.
Also, big thanks to Victor (Halo) and his awesome wife for keeping this event on track both in the planning stages and at the actual event. Jess is trained well (no disrespect meant) and seems to have as much enthusiasm as the rest of us phreaks for audio and she knows what the hell she is doing as well; plus she a die hard Cubbies fan. :)
Lastly and certainly not least Rich (SCompRacer) the amount of gear you were willing to load up in a rented van and transport was just awesome. Your TT rig was stellar as I haven’t heard a proper analog rig in over 15 years. I had a great time talking with you as well; you are extremely knowledgeable. Also, a big thanks to Norm (Normanality) and especially his heavily modded (Sonic Caps, Vampire, RD0's) SDA 1C’s which are now in my living room.
I’m currently at work and didn’t want to wait until this evening to get something posted. There is certainly more to come as I have more to say about the Fest but I should get some work done or I’ll be looking for a job. <lol> :D

P.s. the rest of the Polkies I met were absolutely wonderful. We all had a great time together and I got to make some new friends. We all had fun joking with each other, etc.

My apologies to all at Polkfest for my "no-show". A combination of being away from my computer since Wednesday and simply forgetting when the event was happening has me wearing the dunce cap tenfold. It would appear that my loss is my loss is my loss -- as it seems a stellar time was had by all.
Missing out on free booze, grub, tunes, gear and a motley assortment of Polkies I would have loved to finally put a face to has me flogging myself at the current moment. Hearing that Ricardo is the life of the party I knew he would be only adds insult to injury:D
Thanks to all who worked so hard to put this together. I'm sure this Karma will come back and hump your leg.

Yep, yep, yep. Pull a chair up in the corner and face forward and think about what you did; we'll tell you when you can stop sitting the corner, by yourself :D :D .
After reading this thread I think you get the idea, it was your loss :) I'm pretty sure there will be a next time though !!
