View Full Version : Chicago Polkfest???
Joey has been asking about this lately. For some odd reason he wants to put me in charge of it. So, here we go...
We need someone to host a Chicago Polkfest.
Anyone unaware I am in a wheelchair? Well, now ya know! ;)
IMO, SCompRacer has the best acoustics and, for me, accessibility. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, he isn't able to play host to a large group of Polkies.
I'd love to have a get together but my house 'aint gonna work.
I'd prefer it to be "close" to Chicago, say within 45 - 60 min. It isn't all about me though :o
Anyone want to host a Chicago area AUDIO / POLKFEST now's the time to step up to the plate. How about SPRING / SUMMER '07?

Bloomington is far.... but it's worth it to meet Polkies. If no one else is closer, I suppose Bloomington it is!
Do I bring Summits?

Alright... this has to be in the Summer and somewhere during my 2 week off stint... yes, that's the ONLY summer I'm getting nowadays! Stupid med school...
Anyway, I will bring the Summits and the Plinius and whatever preamp I end up with at that time... still looking at the $4K Cary Audio SLP-98 preamp as the crown jewel of my system....mmmmMMMMmmmmmMMmm.... Cary tubes.....
Joey
Unless someone can host this closer for everone...
My neighbors are going to really hate me!:D

I'd be interesting in coming as well! I live in a condo and don't have a whole lot of extra room, or would offer to host.
Would be great to meet some more Polkies!

Less than five hours drive to Chicago or Bloomington.......I'm in for this one...have already missed two gatherings :(
I've drove through Bloomington to Eureka twice already to pick up SDA's....meeting polkies is a better reason to do it :)

A_Mattison,
Where is Roscoe, IL?
Joey
Roscoe is just north of Rockford, IL.
I only live a few miles from Heiney9. I know that H9 is interested in a get together as well...even a mini-fest to do some listening at someone's house. H9 and DKG999 were over at my house last weekend. We had a great time.

Ive seen the posts about Polk-fests, but not really understood what takes place... Do different people bring their super-cool or unique gear to listen to and hand out, drink a few beers, etc..)? (that is what it sounds like....sounds good to me)

Then that means I live about 30 minutes east of you... atleast my home home is 30 minutes away from you. I'm right on 90, right by the Prime Outlets of Huntley, IL when you're headed east to Chicago (where my apartment is).
That means that H9 isnt too far from me either.. wow... so many polkies.

Yep I'm on the NE side of Rockford just off the tollway I-90 (Riverside exit). I'd certainly be a participant (depending on the date not around July 4th) and I'd certainly help organize, but I would not be able to host such an event. Seems like there is some solid interest and it's good to get the wheels rolling early.
H9
2 hours is a lot of seat time for me but I should be able to attend. I call the couch for pressure relief ;) :)
Need to organize travel plans - especially if you want to "caravan" to Bloomington. People + gear + a wheelchair fills a vehicle fast. I don't have a vehicle large enough to handle my gear and my chair at the same time.
Mike - you have a pm.

Guys, at the present time it's my understanding that Anthony is hosting Polkfest '07 in southern NJ probably in September, so may I suggest the spring for the Chicago Polkfest. That way they will be spread out a little more and perhaps more folks would attend both. I know I'd consider coming up in the spring. Also, you should consider talking with Troy about what it takes to host one of these as he has it down to a fine science.

I would also hit it in the spring but summer is too close to the already planned Polkfest '07 in September. Coincidence that these are around the time of Oktoberfest? I've never been to Club Med but have enjoyed two Club Polkfest's. My point is that for those of us that are not local, it takes time and money to drive or fly. You can still hold it in the summertime but as F1nut suggests, less people will be able to attend.

Very good point!! I really am going to make an effort to attend PF "07 so spreading them out is sound idea. Perhaps end of March or early April is more appropriate.

Also I don't picture this being on the grand scale that a traditional PF usually is. In my mind it would be a one day event. Certainly any and all are invited to attend, but I don't see it being a whole weekend thing. But then again I'm just thinking out loud. But I think it's still a good idea to keep some distance between this and Anthony's shindig. Since I'm local for this I'll go along wiith whatever is decided.

Just know that it's harder for me to go to CFest on a spring day than it is on a summer day. I have a huge superblock clinical rotation in the springtime... but who knows.

As far as being an 'official' PF...yeah, probably want to spread those out.
However, smaller, regional get togethers...why not? So, you don't get the Polk swag, but, so what?
Hosting is easy, got food? got gear? got booze? Easy.

You have a PM. I'm still trying to figure one thing out for you and it might be a problem?:o Otherwise, getting into my house and deck will not be an issue.

So far MikeC78 you sound like the viable person to hold this. I'm familiar with Bloomington as I went to school there so it would be fun to visit the old stomping ground. Plus for me it's only about 2 hour or so drive which it just about right. Works for me.

Of course - I am all over this... I will be there.
I can bring the CinePro and whatever else anyone is interested in seeing. (NAD T163 preamp, Naked LSi7's, etc.) I also have a rough set of SDA 1b's that could make the trip...
If accomodations are needed, we may be able to help out as well. :)
Michael
OK Mike - I'm down. I'll have to rent a minivan to accomodate my gear, my chair, and whichever person I bring with me - probably my brother maybe my wife (Any other wives going to be in attendance?).
April or May would be really good for me. June or July would work for me also.
I'm open so let's nail down a specific weekend, that way people can start clearing their schedules and make travel arrangements. This is going to be fun!

I'm sure you know Veteran's quite well?? If you keep driving on Veteran's south toward the mall keep going unit you hit E. Oakland. You'll be making a left on Oakland if you are heading south, keep going until you come to "Old farm Rd, Old Farm Subdivison" on your right. When you make your right, drive about 2-3 blocks my house will be on your right hand side. PM me for exact address.

:D Yeah!!!
I'd love to hear the Cinepro hooked to some 15's! However, I could always hear them anytime? That puppy sure puts out a ton of power!
Mike
OK folks, for those of youse interested in attending:
I think some people have this "gathering" a little mixed up with Polkfest 07'?
This Chicago get togther is really just made for a small crowd as I don't have the accomodations for a very large group. I'll try to host as many as possible, but I think I could probably only house about 10-15 human beings? My house is roughly 2700 sqft total with basement. Not including the deck where people can hang out. Just an FYI...
MikeHow bout we call it Chicagofest '07 to alleviate any confusion between the two upcoming gatherings?
MikeC78
11-13-2006, 04:13 PM
FYI...
Let's not get this gathering confused with a gigantic Polkfest from all over the US. This is the Chicago Polkfest(gathering), as I have limited room in my house. Roughly 15 mature human beings.;)
I planned on this event to be a "one nighter" maybe two if some are interested in staying the night in a hotel. I have roughly a 2700 sq ft house, not including the backyard and deck which I don't think to many of us want to hang outside with all the gear inside.;)
If someone has a bigger and better idea, please let us know? I'm more than happy to host this at my place, just have a limited area to do so.
Mike:)

Let me clarify myself too...
This "gathering" doesn't have to be a one day thing. If people are interested in having this the whole weekend, that's fine. I know there will probably be a TON of gear to be seen and heard. So, let's plan on this to take place on early Friday and end late on a Sunday? Any longer than that and my Wife will start kicking people out!:p

Gear? At the rate I am swapping things, who knows what I will have a few months down the road...but if nothing changes I could bring the AES AE-3 DJH preamp, BADA HD tube player, the little bit three "sleeper" DAC, and if I feel strong enough, the Belles 350A... maybe the 3.1 TL's??

I just sent Joey a pm asking him when it would be best for him. I'm open as long as I have some notice. Try to avoid holiday's like Easter, Mother's day, Father's Day. 4th of July is ok though. Wife works in retail and holidays are "blacked out".

The following weekend of June 30th, July 1st, and July 2nd would be perfect for me.
I'll see what if anything is planned for those days by my family. The 25, 26, 27 are all taken up by a National Martin Logan Meet at Kansas, USA... so I'm busy on those days.
You know people.... as long as we do it early enough during my rotation, I should be ok. Anything in early May should be ok with me provided it's a weekend.
Let me know what you guys think.
Joey
Only thing in May is mother's day - Sunday May 13th. Other than that May would be better than June IMO. Pick a date in May Joey :)

I should be free anytime in may... preferably earlier. I wont know "exactly" how my rotation will schedule me, but more than likely, I should have the weekends off.
Joey
The best weekend for Joey is June 29th, 30th, & July 1st. This puts us about two months away from almford's PF '07.
Since most who are planning on attending Chicagofest '07 (except for F1nut) are from the Chicagoland area and are not, that I'm aware of, going to attend PF '07 this shouldn't be an issue unless the date is a problem for somone else.
The only other date that might work for Joey is May 18th, 19th, & 20th but it isn't guaranteed.
Sound off -
May 18th, 19th, & 20th or June 29th, 30th, and July 1st?

I would prefer the May date (that's not Mothers Day weekend is it). The June date will be 50/50 for me as I usually head up to Hayward for the 4th of July and it may be that I leave at the end of June. No solid plans yet, but that's the usual plan. If May can't work I could probably work around the June date.
H9
Let's start to generate a gear list. We don't want to have too much shite there or we'll never get through it all.
Joey's gear is a given. Are you going to have any decent cables or IC's by then Joey?
I'll be happy to lug the whole enchilada, just one peice, or nothing at all depending on who wants to hear what. I also have some AR-2ax's I could bring in addition to the stuff in my signature.

You guys gotta give more time on these decision's. I wasn't able to access at work today and it looks like in a matter of hours the June date was decided :p :D.
That being said we need to plan it for when a majority of people can attend. If it's June then I will try to work around it if I have a conflict. We haven't put solid plans in place for the 4th yet, just going on the past 20 years or so of tradition.

Anyone want to hear anything?

Edit - oh, i forgot I do have a 3960 dvd player that was modified by MadMax for audio playback. (i use it as an audio cd player) If someone can bring an actual decent CD player, could make for an interesting shootout.
Edit #2 - and a beat up pair of sda 1b's. (unmodified)

Pictures are not up to date, so look at the list :)I really think you should bring the Carver AL-III's and the Bada HD-22 Tube CD player. Are there going to be any SDA's making an appearance?
With Joey's ML's you'd get to hear an electrostat. The Carver AL-III's you'd get to hear a ribbon tweeter (all four feet of it). My Von's are a convential (cone) speaker - but all three are (sort of) di-pole speakers.
If I bring both TAD-60's we can bi-amp the the AL-III's. Ask Normanality his AL-III's are beasts when bi-amped.

Correction - Joey is the youngest with the most expensive gear. The cool factor is subjective. I'd take a tube amp over a sand amp any day in a  contest.

Let's start to generate a gear list. We don't want to have too much shite there or we'll never get through it all.
Joey's gear is a given. Are you going to have any decent cables or IC's by then Joey?
I'm not sure.... I should have some by then.
Also, I should have something like the Transporter by then.... and we can use the AKM DACs if we want to go with a CDP to it instead of the usual streaming of FLAC. Though I will bring my External HDD myBook to the party so we can hook it up to the network and I can stream my FLACs to the Summits.

FLAC is lossless and is a compression file of the original wav file, only to be uncompressed during playback. FLAC is basically a zip storage form of wav... but it is full wav. FLAC is essentially CD.
Hence, FLAC is better than Satellite since that is lossy, if I'm not mistaken.

This an audio meet....FLAC is dubious. I use FLAC as a storage medium and I use it in my now defunct (soon to be upgraded) computer rig. I know it's gaining popularity with the music server crowd and it is lossless, etc. But this is an audio meet to see cool gear etc. I won't say I won't listen to FLAC but others should have enough transports/cdp's to make listening to the FLAC's unnecessary.
Bring the 3.1 TL's if you can. It's been awhile since I've heard SDA's and the 3.1's are actually the model I'd consider if/when I buy a pair.

Placing a ban on audio related thingamagigs that others don't approve of or is too old sucks. In all fairness I would figure it's up to the host for what will be connected to his electric. Consult with BDT.
My interest in flac is that I have not heard "lossless" digital recordings and I don't get any satisfaction from satellite radio.

I really don’t have an issue with FLAC. I just don’t want it to become the focal point for the meet and have people leave gear at home. FLAC really isn’t all that evil, but from a purists p.o.v. it’s hard to swallow. I use FLAC a lot but I’m still traditional enough to use a conventional transport. I will however say that if we are going to be using top gear I won’t listen to Mp3’s or WMA’s or any of the Ipod/iTunes stuff. Well, I’ll listen but it won’t be in the spirit this meet was intended. I’ve listened too many of the other computer based formats out there and they don’t belong in mid/high end audio. There I took a stance. :p

That's fine that you'd take a tube amp.... but I'd take a Class A amp with a tube preamp over anything else any day of the week. Besides... I do have cool gear, atleast to my eyes.Read all the info on the TAD (http://www.angelfire.com/biz/bizzyb/TAD-60.html) Joey. Class A tube amp :p with variable feedback, gain control, choice between triode mode and UL mode + I can roll different tubes = infinite adjustability. Besides, IMHO, nothing beats the warm glow of tubes for looks ;)
I never said your gear wasn't  Joey - I just said it was the most expensive (which it is). Expensive gear doesn't always = and  gear doesn't have to be expensive.

I'm also NOT interested in hearing music thru a computer, get real folks.Ditto.
What happens when you compress something? Things get lost. Don't think it's true? OK, then go to the grocery store and buy two oranges. Proceed to eat the first orange. Compress the 2nd orange. Put the compressed orange back together and eat it. Notice a difference? Still not convinced? Look at all the crap still sitting on the table from the compressed orange that you weren't able to "put back together". When you compress - you lose something. Plain and simple.
Either way, I'm still bringing my FLACs. You can probably hear better than me, that's fine. But this is for real and I dont understand why people have this bias against FLAC.

JoeySee above post.
btw - I'm not dismissing anything. FLAC is basically a zip storage form of wav... but it is full wav. FLAC is essentially CD.
Hence, FLAC is better than Satellite since that is lossy, if I'm not mistaken.
JoeyCompressed only to be uncompressed to make it "essentially" CD quality. You just made my point for me - "essentially" is not "exactly" CD quality.

Victor, from my own pov, FLAC as a medium is exactly the same as a conventional wave. But precautions need to be taken when extracting the wav from the cd, that’s strike #1. Also using a laptop, or home computer as the vehicle is strike #2. and finally running it thru some kind of external server is strike #3.
FLAC all by itself is exactly the same info as on a conventional cd, but as outlined above are where the compromises come into effect.
I completely echo your disdain for FLAC, but it has everything to do with how the end signal is delivered and nothing to do with the FLAC encoding at all.
Fundamentally FLAC is completely lossless and it’s a great way to archive because each file is about 25-30% smaller, but the extraction and delivery methods are the usual suspects.

Is it FLAC that you're concerned about or the medium through which it is sent? I dont understand where all this FLAC disdain comes from, I dont understand why some of you think that going FLAC is worse than covering your ears with mud (so to speak) that you wont even listen to it at the gathering? That's awfully arrogant.... sort of like saying that your ears are too good for FLAC or the minutia of difference the encoding/decoding makes. Last time I checked, no one here, including me, have what it takes to claim "golden ear" status. No one here has a room like Mike Lavignes. No one here has $40,000 speakers with $40,000 interconnects and listens through a Rockport TT with Dartzeels or Tenor amps at the helm. Regardless of amount spent, no one here, I believe, has the right to say, "I wont listen to FLAC at the gathering."
That's so BS.
Last time I checked, this was a group of people meeting for the love of music... remember the mantra "It's all about the music?"
Yet some have prerequisites of what that consists of.
To tell you the truth, the only time I hear a difference in FLAC is through which source it is played. When I play a CD through the Ayre CDP, it sounds different, but that is definitely attributable to the $6,000 component moreso than the CD itself. With the Transporter there, I dont understand where all this disdain comes from when the Transporter is as good as a DAC can be with regulated linear power supplies and the works.
Audio-elitists need to get down from their pedestals....
Joey
PS
Hey, if someone has an MP3 of a song that they really like but couldnt find on CD or lossless, I'd like to hear it. I have absolutely no problem listening to music in less than "perfect" quality.
PSS
I just want to bring my FLAC because there are songs here that I reference for my Summits and these are the songs that I'll use to demo them and work with them while positioning the Summits to make sure that things sound right. Geez guys... no need for audio snobbery. I expect this from people from AVS, not from here.

Look I didn't jump in to act like a snob or "ban" things from the meet. And Joey_V you don't need real expensive equipment like you mentioned in your post to hear the differences. Me personally, I'll still listen and I'll still attend and we'll all have fun and I won't be critical. But stop trying to convince me the differences are minor and that you need golden ears and expensive equipment to hear a difference. MY only point was not to turn this into a "well we have FLAC's to listen to so why bother with cdp's and dac's and transports, etc. When you own a high quality DAC you'll find many of the differences talked about in this forum are much more apparent, whether it's cables, transports, spikes, media, etc. It doesn't take 40K worth of equipment to notice.
I guarantee when you finally get some cables and a true high end source Joey, you'll came back and realize what all the hubbub is about. I'll say it again as humbley as possible it's a damn shame to have the awesome gear you have and using the computer as a source and the cables you own. Upgrading the source and cbales will put you in a whole other notch performance wise.
And yes Victor, I agree with what you said before you edited it to read Never Mind d :) .
Ok; let's stop arguing; everyone has a right to have preferences, and no equipment should be banned; if someone does not want to hear to a particular piece of gear, it's time for him/her go grab more beers for the rest of us :)Fine by me. I said what I had to say.
Joey - can you please stop bringing up the Benjamins? If you want to live by the rule "It's all about the music" stop pointing out how much the gear cost and just listen to the music. IMO you are creating a playing field that is not level. No one is going to give another piece of gear consideration if it's meager price tag is below that of your lofty Summits, Plinius, and now your new preamp
- I see you went back and edited your posts to remove the price of your new pre.
And yes Victor, I agree with what you said before you edited it to read Never Mind d :) .Thanks. I edited it because I don't want to argue (with anyone) about it anymore.
This is going to be a friendly get together and we're all going to have a good time.

H9... I'm not trying to convice anyone of anything. If you can hear the difference fine, you have better ears than me when you have the original CD and a CD burned from FLAC to wav. End of story.
Victor... you brought up benjamins before I did on this thread. You had to make sure that Mike was completely correct in the minutias of his statement. Fine, whatever made you do that is ok with me, I just question your motive. Ever since you sent that pm to me about how it's all about my gear and with that "sarcastic face on it", something clicked in my head that suggest "something isnt right here". I mean, what is it that you're trying to prove by making sure everyone is politically correct in what they say? Are you trying to prove that your gear is better than mine and that one doesnt have to spend an absurd amount of money like I did? Fine... so what if your gear potentially is better than mine. Big deal. So you got your money's worth. That's fine, say it outright and dont beat around the bush. BUT, dont tell me that I brought up the benjamins first... because you did.
I dont like arguing. I just wanted to bring my system.. as a whole. But apparently, some here prefer to bash parts of my system before even hearing it. Excuse me if I dont have the best CDP or the best cables. I'm sorry that I cant upgrade everything at once.
And H9... you dont need to show me what true sources can do, I've heard it and I know what it can do. For me, the SB3 works perfectly fine at the moment. Is there better? No doubt.
I just dont like arguing and this Fest is getting off on the wrong foot.

Joey_V, I'm not trying to bash anything. For ME, logically I can't get my head around having incredible speakers, amp, and pre and then skimping on the source and the delivery (cables) of that source. For me the different speakers are the most important thing. So the more the merrier. It's a long ways off, but I was thinking that those who have too much gear to haul might get some help from others who are close enough to help transport. I may be able to pack another set of speaks if need be.
Perhaps when it gets closer you could drop a pair at your parent's place in Huntley and I could meet you there and transport them the rest of the way, etc, etc. A bit early to be discussing, but a viable option nonetheless.

What I could do is start moving the gear to Huntley... the Summits, Minis, and the rest of the gear. Then I could use some help going from Huntley to Mike's place.
The only problem is that you have to understand that the Minis are larger than their name implies. The Minis are 150lbs each and come in crates that are larger than the Summit boxes themselves. How and why? I do not know.

First off, thank you Joey... I signed my name on the dotted line about 5 years ago.
ND-
I really don't know to tell you truth? It really doesn't matter because they could not offer me enough to do that, I've served my time. Before I left SD back in May, they were only offering me about $5 g's. Which is really horrible considering my job, I look for explosives for a living! I'm military police with a bomb sniffing K9 named Damien.:) The bonuses fluctuate from time to time, it could be as much as 50 g now? I'm not interested anymore this is my third and last deployment! I have a family and the most beautiful 10 month old daughter to worry about now.:)
Allow me to clarify some things - although you make it difficult for me since you've been editing your posts:Victor... you brought up benjamins before I did on this thread. You had to make sure that Mike was completely correct in the minutias of his statement.Youngest with the coolest gear.... doesn't sound that bad to me....
MichaelCorrection - Joey is the youngest with the most expensive gear. The cool factor is subjective. I'd take a tube amp over a sand amp any day in a contest.Just felt that the cool factor was an opinion. The expensive remark is a FACT - at least as far as our little get together is concerned. You did go back and edit your posts that make a point of the cost of your new pre.Fine, whatever made you do that is ok with me, I just question your motive.I'm not the only one that sees you for what you really are Joey. Brock pointed it out as wellAnd Joey_V you don't need real expensive equipment like you mentioned in your post to hear the differences. You want further proof that you are the audio snob? Read your review on the mini's here (http://av123forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16886&perpage=15&pagenumber=1). How many times do you bring up the cost of the gear? It's a pattern you tend to repeat here, on this forum, as well.Ever since you sent that pm to me about how it's all about my gear and with that "sarcastic face on it", something clicked in my head that suggest "something isnt right here".I think everyone, including myself, would like very much to hear your equipment Joey. I've been doing my best to make this event work around YOUR schedule bud.I mean, what is it that you're trying to prove by making sure everyone is politically correct in what they say?I'm not trying to be PC. I'm calling it as I see it.Are you trying to prove that your gear is better than mine and that one doesnt have to spend an absurd amount of money like I did?How the hell can I do that if I've never heard your rig Joey? You heard mine - remember?Fine... so what if your gear potentially is better than mine. Big deal. So you got your money's worth. That's fine, say it outright and dont beat around the bush.Again I can't say it as I haven't heard your rig yet!!! All I said was that you have the most expensive rig!!! Quit twisting my words around. I'm not beating around any 'effin bushes.I never said your gear wasn't  Joey - I just said it was the most expensive (which it is). Expensive gear doesn't always = and  gear doesn't have to be expensive. That seems like a pretty direct commemnt to me.
BUT, dont tell me that I brought up the benjamins first... because you did.Yes I did. Guess you've been doing it for so long I just lost my place.
I dont like arguing.Me neitherI just wanted to bring my system.. as a whole. As do I. Said it before and I'll say it again if it makes you happy. But apparently, some here prefer to bash parts of my system before even hearing it. Excuse me if I dont have the best CDP or the best cables. I'm sorry that I cant upgrade everything at once.I didn't mean to bash you Joey. I just asked if you were going to have some decent cables and IC's by the time this happens. If you took that as bashing I didn't mean for it to be. I'm not the only person who is of the opinion that you should upgrade your IC's and cables. That's up to you. If you don't feel it's worth it then ignore the comment - you didn't thoughLet's start to generate a gear list. We don't want to have too much shite there or we'll never get through it all.
Joey's gear is a given. Are you going to have any decent cables or IC's by then Joey? I'm not sure.... I should have some by then. And H9... you dont need to show me what true sources can do, I've heard it and I know what it can do. For me, the SB3 works perfectly fine at the moment. Is there better? No doubt. So you see Brock's point on this subject which, unless I'm mistaken is the same as Jesse's, and mine. Guess me and Jesse didn't word it correctly. btw - did I bash your SB3 directly? no.
I just dont like arguing and this Fest is getting off on the wrong foot.
JoeyYou're right about that and I'm in complete agreement with the last statement. I didn't want to continue along this road but I felt the need to clarify myself on a few things. Let's get past this and just have some fun at Chicagofest '07 Joey. If you have anything further you'd like to discuss with me in regards to this topic let's do it off of the CP forum. You have my number. I do not have yours.

Regardless of amount spent, no one here, I believe, has the right to say, "I wont listen to FLAC at the gathering."
I said it and I'll say it again. Doesn't mean you can't bring it, just that I don't want to hear it. I have that right just as anyone else has the right to not listen to something they have no interest in. I also have no interest in MP3's or iPods, etc. Clear enough?

For an event that is at least 6 months away, we seem to be spending more time pissing on it rather than planning it. Lets get back to the fun part.
I am really looking forward to this event. Lets not derail it this early in the game. Everyone has made their points and we are not going to explain or convince anyone into changing their minds. If possible, please let things drop from the thread and carry on with PM's if you have to.
You can see most of the gear people have in thier sigs. What gear (or beer.. :)) do you have that is not in your sig and what do you want to listen to???
My gear:
In my sig +
SDA 1b (non-upgraded)
RM6600 + polk PSW350 sub
onkyo 777 avr
yamaha C85 preamp. (late 80's solid state 2 channel (pre remote control))
My wish list:
I am looking forward to the summits,
Mikes LSi15's in all 4 corners of his ht.
I hope to have the opportunity to check out some other pre/pros. I would love to shootout some pre/pros with the LSi setup. (NAD vs Rotel vs Outlaw would be awesome. (opus has a rotel and I have an NAD - anyone have the outlaw?))
While I am not in the market for 2 channel, I would be interested in hearing what I am giving up by running a pre/pro vs a dedicated 2 channel preamp.
Michael
I'll bring a few tube amps and pres.

Things I am looking forward to at the Fest:
- I havent really heard a full out LSi setup. Mikes 4xLSi15 would be a treat for sure!
- Like I said earlier, I would like to hear SDA, McLoki's got some I can see from his sig.
- Carver Amazings, if possible.... but I know they're hard to transport.
- Whichever else is out there... not sure if I missed it on this thread.
- I would also like to learn more about tube amps and pres, I see ND13 is bringing more than a few. A good compare and contrast would be nice... as well as a lesson in tubes and amp/preamp topologies.
We should start with an equipment list as this will get real hairy real fast.
Joey
Noel - Rich & Norm (especially Norm) look to be last minute decisions. I'd say we're at our host's stated quota but maybe we can squeeze a few more in?

I'll be happy to handle the "gear list" folks. Send me what you have or plan to bring as well as what you'd like to see / hear. After everything is submitted I'll post the results.

Now there's an understatement. They are very easy to screw up. And a bitch to set up. IMHO, that's something the host should have, I wouldn't take mine anywhere.

Ok the important stuff.... The beer list... Home brew isn't for everyone, it's a lot stronger in flavor than most domestic beers, even the lighter brews. I'll bring two 5 gallon kegs for some sampling (lots of samples). I will try to make a lighter beer, although I never have, so we will see how it turns out. My other favorites are stout, european style bock, belgian white, and nut brown ale. If any of those sound good, let me know. Otherwise, I'll take requests and then pick one.
Alright, back to audio gear...... I would be very interested in the 4x LSI15 setup. The tube pre and amp shootout sounds awesome also. From there it is all learning experience for me.

You don't have to make a light beer just for me, especially if you've never made it before. 5 gallons is a lot of beer to go to waste. Thanks anyway...I'll have plenty of regular light beer at the house. I'm open to taste test any beer you bring, it's all good...

Since there is some air clearing going on, I'd like to apologize to Demi. Sorry Demi. :o I went berserk a few weeks ago after something he posted triggered strong feelings from my past. At the time I blamed him, then postpartum Polkfest depression, election stress, a flu which is kicking my keister, then finally realized it was my problem. I took Jesse's advice from awhile ago, that if you're not having fun here - you're in the wrong place. I took a breather and missed this place but feel refreshed.

Even better. That's 388.51 miles. If I average 120mph in the ThugStang, I can get there in 3hrs 23minutes. :)
I drove over 700 miles to go to PFest ala BDT. It was worth it, imo, even if just to meet some of the people we are so involved with on a daily basis. I might not have averaged 120, but I'd say I averaged over 80 and that was thru mountains, in a 4x4 truck.

Just my humble 0.02c :)I wanted to get the ball rolling, so to speak, so people could clear their schedules to attend the event (if there was going to be one). That was my main objective. 2nd was to see if there was an available host and third was to see if sufficient interest existed for a get together.

I'd love to compare these to the LSi15's, hopefully there isn't much of a difference to my ears?:o

I'm assuming you guys are all bringing music with you? My collection is awfully small, unless you guys want to watch movies!:)
I'm sure you guys don't want to listen to my Ipod.;)

Mike,
No problem, it will take some time to copy though.. so make sure you have 60gb free (at this time) in your PC. By the time we get to the Fest, I should be expecting to have 100gb or more of FLAC.
You're welcome, btw!! :)
JOey
PS
Zero country for MikeC.

I like a little country every now and then. Play it forward and sometimes it is sad, play it backwards and it is all happy. You get your truck back, your job back, your girl back, your dog back....

I'm in if I'm available. Has there been a tentative date set yet? I'm too lazy to read all six pages of this thread.

If there's still room, I'd like to attend. Bloomington's only about 45 minutes away.
I realize that this is primarily an audio event, but just wanted to float this idea:
The host said that he's primarily set up for HT use. If there's any interest in A/B-ing the new HD formats (both audio and video) I can provide a Toshiba HD-A1 (HD-DVD) and Sony PS3 (Blu-Ray) as well as 20+ BR titles and 60+ HD-DVD titles... by then I'm likely to have a boatload more of both formats...
Hi Dan! I was wondering if / when you were going to chime in :) I'd be interested in those new formats! :D
