Is It Possible to Forego My Receiver?

I realize this is a strange question, but I'm curious --

I own an Oppo 970 DVD player. (Fantastic player, by the way.) I have a very simple setup -- 5.1 home theater system with a powered sub, a 5-channel amp, and a receiver that is functioning as a processor and for volume control. I have the Oppo HDMI cable hooked up directly to the TV, so I do not use my HT system for video processing or to watch TV.

Is it possible to plug the 5-channel amp and sub directly to the Oppo via its 5.1 channel audio outputs, use the Oppo's audio processing and volume control capabilities, and dispense with my receiver altogether?

I don't see why not. The line level outs on the oppo has a sub/lfe channel, right? Only one way to find out...

Another related question -- since there is audio processing capability in the DVD player and the receiver, is the signal being processed twice?

Your player only processes the stuff going out the analog outputs. The digital outputs are processed by the AVR. I use whichever sounds best to my ears for movies, but multichannel SACD/DVD-A has to go out the analogs.

Are you sure that the Oppo's volume control works that way, I know you can program the remote to operate other devices but I've never seen player that could control the volume other equipment with out some kind of device code?

Not sure. The big question is whether or not the DVD player has the ability to control the volume of an amp.

The manual recommends using the receiver or TV to control the volume, then it says the remote can be used as an alternative means of volume control.

The volume controls on players top levels are loud...

Infact, if your player dosnt have a volume control to turn it down, there isnt really a way to "turn it up" - its startling at how loud it is...

The Oppo has fixed and variable outputs... so yes, the volume can be controlled by the unit.

For what it's worth, the Oppo also has bass management settings (I forget in what increments), so setting your speakers to small will also be an option.

Now that I think of it, it's possible that only the volume of the two fronts can be controlled with the player...

I see no reason why not if the DVD player has volume controls. I think Sid is right about the volume being pretty loud from the get-go.

By calibrate, if you mean you can change the levels for each channel, then the answer is "yes."

That would be a big "negatory". I was confusing 'em with the mixed and front right/left outputs.

i have also just purchased the oppo player,but not before exchanging a bazillion emails with the techs who informed me that the oppo will take care of all processing and will also control the volume etc...of the system i will be hooking up here shortly..which is a yamaha amp for the woofer portion of a set of ar-9's. a kenwood amp for the mid/high range of the ar-9, a yamaha amp for the polk center and a sansui amp for the polk 10b rears...it will also take care of any of the discrepency of wattage btwn the amps, err, or so they say :)

well, got the oppo, wired everything up, and..................superb!! having the oppo control four amps, rear surrounds/center and fronts which are bi-amped! have to tweak the level control still some and things like that but otherwise it surely blows my old denon system away...been playing ice age to start off with and hearing things like wind sounds and cracking ice etc. that i never heard before, what a blast :D

the oppo comes highly recommended from tons of folks, and now by me ....
