...so hopefully it will be here by the end of the week. I was really tempted to go for the Denon 2930, but decided as an audiophile, not videophile, it was hard to justify that kind of cash. Onc eI calibrate with the avia disc, I'll post a little review. I suppose I should also slide over to Best Buy and pick up a couple of SACD's just for shits and grins.

Well, I got it hooked up last night. So far so good. The blacks were incredible. So deep but so detailed too. I haven't even calibrated it yet with the Panny. I do wish it did more to help bad transfers.

More comments...

Watched part of Black Hawk Down the other night. Much better than the Tosh 3960. I thought the film was a bit soft, but it was just the 3960. Even scaled up to 720P, it was very sharp. Not quite HD, but I thikn I have done well. No MB so far, which is great. I really think it is making my screen shine. Just gotta calibrate it this weekend.

Wes well congrats on your purchase. i did the same thing this last week, as far as the denon goes according to some reviews i have read, the oppo beats out the denon and some players costing as much as 13k which is hard to imagine. but the way i see it if it even comes close to what the denon does it will be a great purchase considering the savings. and yes please post your findings it will be intresting to see how it rates in your oppinion. I understand that it excels in video but do these Oppo players compare audio wise to the Denons. I may be in the market and not sure if I should pick up a used Denon that are always floating around or the Oppo. The upsampling isn't really important to me right now as I don't really have much of a display.

Thanks,
Mike

I've had my OPPO 971H for quite some time now. Hooked up thru DVI to my Sony LCD, the picture is awesome. Digital sound for movies & DVD audio is first rate. Suprisingly it's 2 channel performance was a lot more than I expected. The whole OPPO line is just a great deal. You can't go wrong.

Mike, check AC for my I-Sonic comment

Thanks,
Mike well from what i have read quite well. most of the forums have at least 1 or more threads om the oppo players and from what i have read there all positive. i suggest you do a search type in oppo DV-970HD and see what you find. it has won quite a few awards for sound as well as video.i know its hard to imangine but there comparing this 150.00 player to players that are in the thousands. and in a lot of cases its either very close in audio or better even. here is a link to a review that compares the audio abiltys to the denon 5900. http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/avhardware/OppoDV-970HDDVDp3.php REGARDS SNOW

I'm currently listening to music using my Oppo 970 as the source (temporarily). I have compared the sound of the Oppo to my tube CD player in the same setup and the Oppo is extremely impressive. Not surprisingly, the Oppo is a bit brighter and doesn't sound like tubes; other than that, the Oppo's audio quality is far better than one would expect for a $150 DVD player.

Anyone with experience with the mods done by Ram on the Oppo 970?

I haven't found anyone mention the before and after mod differences. I did find one review that stated a replacement of the power cord helped the low end.

Anyone have any comments on the mods for this player or mods in general or ram or anything else.

I was thinking of spending $500+ on cd player and was figuring I wasn't going used and to give up one of the high res formats but now for $150 why not try this player and for more $ was wondering what the mods might do.

Don't bother getting the mods. For $500, you can get a great brand new tube CD player:

It won't have SACD, but that's a minor consideration, IMO. If you want SACD capability, just buy the Oppo plus a decent CDP, and you've got the best of both worlds for a small piece of money.

Mod on the 970 is also offered by Alex Peychev (aplhifi.com). While I can't comment on what it would do on a 970, I have a Pioneer 563 universal player which was modded by Alex a couple years ago. I can vouch of his work (which is top notch) and his after sales support is great. I have a 970HD stock, it is mainly used for upconverting SD DVD on my system. I've been very happy with my $149 investment (if you can call it that).

Anyone have problems with the stretching in 1080i. I have read that the 970 when in upconvert mode has a bad stretch to it. The people on the screen seem to be short and fat , like on a stretch mode in sd. I have read from alot of people who posted in AVS forum, have ran accross this problem.
