should I bother with interconnects

I thought I was sure of my self on some of this stuff but now I'm not so sure.

I have a Pioneer DVD (below) which is currently serving as my CDP too. That said I have an audioquest digital coax from DVD/CDP to my TX-NR901 which serves a pre/pro.

I have the Rotel listed below which serves as amp for 2 channel and to power the mains when I have the home theater on, surrounds/center run off Onkyo.

My question is this; Is there any reason to put interconnects between the DVD/CD player since I prefer the DAC in the onk over that in the DVD/CDP?

Let me know if I'm misunderstanding either the analog vs. digital deal hear or with cables vs DACS.

If I were to get a used cd player in the $300-$500 range and then I use digital coax to the onkyo aren't I paying a bunch of that $300-$500 for the Dacs in the CDP which I won't be using (until I get rich and get a new 5/7 channel amp right???)

I've been away a while but the bug is creeping back, I'm trying to ease in with some cables or speaker wire to take the next step up.

The DACs in most "good" CD and DVD players are typically better than the ones found in an AVR. It also depends on what you are looking for. For DVDs I ususally just use a digital path and let the AVR do the decoding. It's just easier. For music I always use the CDP or DVD player's DAC with an analog interconnect.

How do you know this? Have you actully put a quality pair of interconnects into the mix and A/B between the analog input to the receiver vs the digital? I have and I have yet to hear an AVR's DAC that outperforms the DACs of my various sources. Once you do that and decide which is the better sound...you have your answer.

Well your question was the right one! I did do some A/Bing but it was with some crappy cable serving as IC vs the audioquest coax. I'll try again with some real IC and see what happens. I guess the results I found originally which pointed to the Onk's DAC's being better was really comparing (rotten) apples to juicy oranges oranges. Thanks for stating the obvious, it's helpful. I'll try again with fresh fruit!

I was curious about this as well and I checked the specs on my AVR and DVD; both indicate 192/24 for the DACs; I am guessing since both AVR and DVD are Yamaha that they are using the same DACs (RX-V2500 & DVD-C750)
