Used Modwright SWL 9.0SE Preamplifier, with silver faceplate. This unit comes with a remote, standard power cord, manual and original box.

I have the Phillips ECC JAN 5687WB that came in the unit when I bought it, and a new pair of Raytheon JAN 5687WB that I just bought from www.tubeworld.com.

This unit is the latest version from Modwright and working wonderfully. The unit is in like new condition, no scratches, and works great, I have played with it for a while and it's not for me, me search continues :(

You might be already familiar with this preamp. For more information, please check out the excellent reviews on 6moons, Enjoy The Music, and Positive Feedback Online.

Asking what I paid for it, 1425.00, buyer pays shipping.

On a serious note...

What do you like about it and what is missing in your opinion. It's a bit pricey for my rig, but I might think about it. Feel free to tell me to get lost since I am really just "window shopping". (This actually happend to me in a shop that is no longer in busines...go figure)

Shack - The short answer is I am done with tubes. There is a lot to like about this preamp, it sounds great, has a remote and HT/bypass, for a tube pre those two are hard to find.

Thanks Russ. I am not completely sold into the world of tubes either, but, I was looking at something that might be a step up from the Dodd ELP. I like the remote but the HT bypass is of no concern. Thanks for the time, but it is probably more than I want to spend now. Good luck.

I am trying to make a sale, I truely beleive it kills the Cary in everyway, you are a fool not to buy it. But I have never heard the Cary, so I really don't have any idea :D

Shack, it is just what you need to complete your rig, buy today! :)

Beardog, you owe it to the audio community to buy this preamp and compare and report back to us which is the better of the two.

The Modwright pre amps have their following. I like mine very much. I had seen them pop up on Audiogon frequently and asked Dan why. He had polled the sellers and: “I found that in just about every case, it was a matter of spending quite a BIT more money and finding something that they preferred, system change to an integrated or balanced system, or they were looking for a unit that was more 'euphonic' or 'tubey' sounding.” So if you like a neutral, analog sound (not overly warm), with incredible detail, separation and top to bottom coverage, this is your pre.

Russ, did you ever try 7119’s in it? They are a bit warmer than the 5687’s, which I prefer. Bendix 6900’s, to me, are way too sterile in the pre amp, and they are also very pricey. They are excellent in his SACD players though.

THAT is a good preamp.... it was down to that one or the Cary 98 I have.

Bottom line is Russ needs to find a different hobby, or build his own. There isn't a preamp made, at ANY pricepoint that will make him happy. He's owned damn near the best available.

Headphones broham?

Beardog,

Are you looking to buy a SWL? I have one to sell, I have just been to lazy to put it up...and was hoping the prices would rebound back to when they were selling for $1600-$1700. Its been sitting in the box for a couple of months, and currently is doing its job in my secondary system. I was planning on not selling it until all my other items have sold (none of which have been posted yet...because I am lazy) since they are all sub $500 and when you go over $500 paypal starts charging fees. If you are interested pm me, if not then you will probably see this in another few weeks, after I post my Gallo Dues, and LSi fxs.

Jared

P.S. Sorry for hijacking the thread Russ, but yours is sold and I would hate for some newbie to jump on mine if a veteran already shows interest.

FWIW, when I've found myself running in circles (and I have, many times) the "blame" was always the speakers. It took me almost 2 years of equipment-switch-aroo to figure out the speakers were the problem. Makes me wonder now, how good some of the stuff I had might have really sounded...

One mess up I know for sure now, was getting rid of my Pinnacle Classic Gold towers. With hindsight, they were a wonderful speaker. Luckily I found the same character in the Energy.

Something to chew on....
