I was in San Jose, CA yesterday and stopped by a Hi-Fi shop, the Analog Room, to give a listen to some speakers & tube gear. I had never heard tube gear before.

I listened to the Sonus Faber Stradivari Homage: http://www.sonusfaber.com/index.html

This is a $40,000 speaker and looked Sexy & beautiful. You can only image the equipment that was driving it.... giant tube monoblocks, a $20k turntable! The music was silky smooth and when I closed my eyes, I forgot that I was listening to a record because the music felt so real and Alive! It was like there was no gear and I was in a studio listening and feeling live music. I also listened to some giant Quad Electostatics on Quad tube gear... truly amazing separation and soundstage: http://www.quad-hifi.co.uk/model.php?sector_id=1&range_id=1&model_id=2. I liked the Sonus better in terms of fuller range of music as the Quad lacked some low end.

For those of you in the Bay Area- check this place out!

My cherry is officially popped!:D

Nice, glad you got your Hi-Fi groove on. Those type of rigs and the gear that makes them up really show what imaginitive smart engineers can do when the bean counters are silenced and the budget is balls to the wall.

I would love to own the Stradivari one day, preferably sooner than later.

Most of us will never own equipment like this. So it's nice when you can experience it. See it, feel it, touch it and hear it. Smile and take the memories with you. It's like sitting in a Rolls Royce.

The more interesting and philosophical question is: If you could afford it would you really spent $40K on a set of speakers?

yes I would, I see nothing wrong in surrounding yourself with beautiful things once your family and the Lord's Work has been taken care of as long as you "share" your good fortune.

I feel the same way about fine art, afterall, the various arts are one of the things seperating us from the Dark Ages and the heathens.

Rock on Robert, you have built quite the rigs, if I get to Cali would love to get my ears on them.

You bet your sweet bipee. . . if I could afford $40k I would probably try to buy $60k speakers. ;)

I'm just dying to hear my system once it is connected. . . the real lust I have is to hear a really really good tube pre a/b with my Spectral pre. Of course with some kickass tube amps. The last time I heard tubes was in 1990 and I wasn't impressed. I understand that tubes have really taken on what tubes really do very very well. I WANT TO HEAR THEM WITH AN ANALOG FRONT END. . . .don't get me wrong this is all in the name of science of course.

Oh yeah....... Norm and I heard a ~$180K system with Magico speakers in a professionally treated room. At Ezra's house. I have yet to hear its equal, and probably never will.

Isn't there an unwritten law that says you gotta do that? :p :D

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with someone's desire to spend the big coin if they have it. More power to ya! All that I'm saying is that I could probably spend $15K on a two channel system and be happy as a pig in mud. It just seems like $40K is a lot of bread, most of it spent on prestige than product. "You get more milage on a cheap pair of sneakers". I'd spend some of the leftover money to buy Joe a bass brace for his 1.2TL's:D And a shit load of beer for my buddies at the American Legion Club.

I hear ya. I'd like to have the job of researching the price point thing.

If rackless Joe would start building and selling clamps again, he could afford his own bass brace.:D

I think once ya get to a certain point...the cost is all relative..

It don`t matter what it cost as long as it sounds good to you..

a lot of times though...ya gets whats ya pay for....

somethings are rediculously overpriced....somethings sound priceless...

That`s why it is said...YMMV..!!!
