10s from the recycle center

I was going to the recycle center in my town and as I pulled up I saw a set of speakers setting in front of the recycle bins. At first I thought they were junk but as I looked at them I saw real Oak speaker boxes and that they were Polk audio. I took them home and hooked them up and they worked perfectly. The tag says they are 10 #184928 and #184922. I took A 61/2 driver out and it said 1988 on the back. I think I lucked out on this. What do you guy think!:) :)

A realistic STA2300 AM/FM stereo receiver, Hitachi HT-51 turntable with a shure M91ED, AKAI GX-M5D cassette deck. Sanaui CD-350 CD player

I would suggest getting some more power on those things soon, or you will likely end up blowing the tweeters.

agreed... if you can.. look into replacing your receiver with something more modern and more powerful.. your speakers will sound even better than they do now. if you think they sound good now.. just wait till you hook them up to more (clean) power. :eek: :D ;)

Give the STA-2300 some respect. It was Radio Shack's "monster reciever" in the late '70s. Something like 130W/ch and reasonable build quality. I'd see about making sure the 2300 was in spec before replacing it.

I've been running Monitor 11t's with a 40W Rotel and a 50W NAD. More power certainly wouldn't hurt, but they'll liquify my brain before the amp 's turned past 11 o'clock.

The polk bug is easy to catch. I picked up my first pair of polks, moniter 10a (peerless tweeter) w/ orig. boxes & packing material for $77 at a Goodwill in Columbus, OH about 5 years ago.

I still have my moniter 10s and love what they have done for me, but I recently upgraded to SDA 1c's. Needless to say, I am a very happy camper.

Stick around and learn from some of the vintage Polk experts around here. You will find it a perfect place to learn and chat about gear.

What reason on God's green earth did someone have for throwing a perfectly good pair of Polk Monitor 10's away? Those are what a lot of us would call excellent sounding. If you managed to snag a pair out by a dumpster the schmuck who tossed has no right to own them.

Any chance we could get some pics of your snag? It'll make me feel all nice and cozy inside to see a perfectly good sounding pair of Polks rescued from the trash compactors.

People around here have no respect for durable goods of any kind, especially old technology. I've gotten thousands of dollars worth of hi-fi gear on a single morning of poking around the local dump/recycling center. If I can talk to the owner they usually say something like "I just got a Bose Waveradio so there's no reason to keep this old junk" while he's unloading a stack of NAD components and a pair of Klipsch Heresys.
