Old Broken Receiver - What to do with it.

I have an old Pioneer SX650 with one side not working. By the black spot, I believe the output transistor is blown on the non working side.

Anyway, my question is what should I do with it. It seems kind of silly to just toss it in the trash. Is there anybody who collects these things for parts? Or is there anybody who repairs these antiques for cheap? I really don't want anything for it, just think it deserves better then a land-fill.

Offer it up on the Trading Post section of diyaudio.com for free for anybody who wants to pay shipping. Someone there will most likely want to tinker with it, or use the power pupply components for some other project.

http://audiokarma.org is the place to unload it for preservation sake. You won't make anything on it, but they love that kinda sh*t over there.

or, if it's in good shape otherwise, and you like it, you might get an estimate from a local repair place. I've had a couple of non-working Pioneer and Marantz units fixed and my local shop was pretty reasonable. If the cost estimate is high, the previous posts have given you some options.

get it looked at at least if it's in good to above condition.. i imagine it's silver faced Pioneer. there are people who like to restore the silver Pioneers.. while that model may not be worth much.. i agree.. it doesn't belong in a trash can/land fill.

I"m all about recycling used vintage stereo gear.. I know there's not alot of fans in here of Pioneer gear... and that's to bad.

Not sure what Kama is here? But you can have it for postage. I just wanted to keep it out of the land-fill. It's been my garage rig for years so it's very (dusty) dirty, one - stereo - light is burnt out and as I stated earlier one channel is gone. The cabinet is good (dirty) shape. I did electronics in the Navy a long time ago. An old Navy buddy told me it is probably the output transistor; Which nowadays is pretty inexpensive. However, I can not help but ask what made the output transistor go? That is the real problem that needs to be solved. For all I know the output transistor may of just failed from age. I know for a fact lights are available. As someone stated there's a whole legion of retro Pioneer people out there.
Power to ya if you want to attempt to fix it. I'm game to sending anywhere other then a land fill.

The SX-650 the follow-up model to the SX-636. It was introduced in 1976 and manufactured through 1977. It was distinguished by the silver AM/FM analog tuner dial that was the mark of Pioneer receivers in the "50" series. Pioneer was able to keep the price at $300, having a more than adequate 35 watts per channel, RMS.

This site is usually very reliable. Probably more accurate than the Blue Book in this case.

Just because it's old doesn't mean it's junk. I would have to go with danger boy and tell you to head over to audiokarma.org with it. Look up a guy named Terry DeWickt there. He's a wizard at repairing this stuff and while it may not be "worth it" to fix it to most people, some people have the nostalgia to want to do it. Terry has fixed a few pieces for me and a few friends that I couldn't tackle due to improper tools. He's reasonable and he's very good. He'd also be able to tell you if it was REALLY worth it to fix or not.

As for your dmagae, just because an output transistor is blown doesn't mean that that is what is causing the problem. It may have a blown diode stuck open or a faulty capacitor or even a power transformer that has seen better days that caused the transistor to blown. You reall need a good multimeter and alot of patience to test continuity across every lead of every part in that circuit to find which one is actually bad.

If you have sentimenal attachment to the unit then you need no other excuse to get it fixed in that you just want to fix it. So do what you will but you are almost guaranteed that someone at audiokarma.org will pick it up and even if it's broken, they will give you a good price for it.

Certainly some great ideas. I'm going to have a local gutair amp repair guy look at it. I really like the booster seat idea.
