Have new end caps and side panels made, save the original ones....a lot of history there.

Wow, I'm sorry man, but I'd have to draw the line and inform her she needs to accept them as they are.
You are getting custom built units with a traceable pedigree. I would not alter their appearance, but that's me.
If I did anything, I'd get new ones made from oak if I absolutely HAD to, but I wouldn't strip the laquered ones. I would guess they aren't oak anyway and you'd be left with something unacceptable and ruined anyway. You might be surprised at how good they will look...

Show the wife the grills of these factory special SRS Polks in this thread and consider herself lucky to have piano black as the only distraction.

I agree and withdraw my recommendation to strip them.

If you have new end caps made, ask Polk about the specifications of the MDF they used. Those bottom caps have to support close to 200 pounds. I would not advise using solid wood because of potential issues with cracking/splitting/warpage.

Russ, those speakers are yours now and you can do whatever you want with them......though I agree that being unique as they are, custom made for a reviewer at the time, it would be a pitty to modify them, specially when the modification if not done professionally will totally ruin them.
You got a pair of one of the best sounding 1.2TL's in the planet; buy a black laquer entertainment center :)

No I dont "wanna take them apart" , I agree with the she needs to accept them ....... Just needed a little reassurance. I mean the speakers I have in there NOW ! are black I will just have to take a little heat and forget about it.
I also didnt realize the history of these forgive my insolence BLACK ET CENTER IT IS !
sometimes you try to appease the wife other times you dont this is a dont
time
Relax Joe and everyone else they will be in one piece black for life !!!!! No worries
When it comes down to it theres not enough oak showing to make a difference withthe grills on or off ......
She will deal with it muahaha !!

Besides, Oak ( Except Red ) is such a clunky grain ... Frankly I can't see why anyone would really want to see it ...

Well red oak is what we have however Im convinced. Leave them be Sometime its hard to be the stereo file of the family. My two friends are the same and they can tell ,we are all tuned into a great sounding system but they all sound differently but my wife cant hear the difference or is it important to her. life goes on
Nah I wont have to sleep on the couch ..... But I might just put them into another room though and go 2.1 type setup When I listen to cds I like it in simple stereo w/ sub itll be one of those she will grumble a little cause she gave me the go ahead on getting a pair .... . Now Im gonna have to buy another amp its never ending MORE MORE MORE POWER ....
Thanks every one for the input like they say " once you go black you never go back "............
