I was in Wally World the other day when I noticed that they have a Sony Explode Mono amp that produces 1000 watts at 2 ohms for $142.99.
Any thoughts on this for that price it seems like a Hell of a deal from a company that has been around with some nice ES pieces back in the day.

There was a post on a forum one day of a guy burning a Sony car amplifier in his driveway with lighter fluid...

If you dont get my drift... then... please buy it.

But Im willing to put money down that the only 1000 watts that amp can do is... 1000 watts into 50% distortion...

Run away from Sony car audio equipment period. Especially their amps. No good, at any price.

Times 3.

Sony did some things right in car audio more than a decade ago (but has been producing nothing but low end, less than reliable stuff since).

That's not to say I would say no to one of their big screen LCD TVs, but definitely not car audio.

You get what you pay for at that price point.

Yeah it seems like home visuals are their forte right now. Great tv's and great dvd players. Only heard of one person being happy with his sony car amp + sub, and it made me look at him in disgust when I heard it.

Be cautious of any audio you can buy 24 hours a day without internet connection. The boxes have the manufacturers produce part number specific to them so you can't price them elsewhere. And, on occasion, with lower quality.

I was in the Sony booth at CES today and heard someone say...."Ah..Sony. I didn't know why they named them Xplod. Until mine did."

Read the fine print. That 1000 watts is max which is meaningless. Im sure if it were struck by lightning it would make 1000 watts but the RMS rating is probably about 250.

The box says RMS. 2 x 500 at 2ohms and 2 x 250 at 4 ohms.
I am sure it sucks but I was just wondering if it was a good amp for someone that needs a little power to drive some subs. I sure the hell dont want it!!!!

That would be a "no".

I did a basic internet search for something decent that puts out 1000 watts rms, and unless you're wanting to take your chances on eBay or with a used amp, you're definitely out of luck in the $150 price range.

It may be a better choice for you to go with a more efficient, lower wattage subwoofer that can make do with far less rms power than to go with Sony. There are plenty of subs that will get loud and sound good with 250 watts rms (and will cost less too).Unfortunately, Sony has earned the reputation they currently enjoy.
