i have a slight issue, i have everything for my home theater decided on except for the dvd/cd player.

heres my problem: do i get a player capable of hd-dvd and other dvd formats?
or do i spend 1,200 on a bluray player,

or best of both a 600 doller ps3 that plays them all?

If you bought a PS3 you would have a great Blu-ray player with great DVD playback capabilities however you wouldn't be able to playback HD-DVDs. There is supposedly a dual format player coming out so if you can hold off you can have the best of all worlds.

The PS3 will only play Blu-ray, not HD-DVD. Secondly LG's combo-player lacks iHD which is used for all the advanced features of HD-DVD. Basically, LG built a Blu-ray player and then tried to add HD-DVD, they did not get approval from the dvd froum so they slapped on what they could for HD-DVD. Recent articles are saying it might not even make it to the sales floor, not that anyone should buy it anyway being it's a half-assed machine.

I bought my HD-A1 for $500 and my BD-P1000 for $569, look around, prices might even be better now. You can land both players for close to $1k and have a proper combo-player. :)

Seeing how the Porn Industry has chosen HD-DVD, I think that might be the format to go with based on history. I still prefer BRay becasue of its backers.

SD-DVD will not be going away for quite a while so it would be better to find a player that has full support for this format.

id like a player that will cover all bases, rotel makes a player that covers everything except blu-ray, but then i couldnt play blu ray movies, i guess ill just have to get to players, or settle for a standerd dvd player until a good combo unit comes out, we just simply need a universal player that is capable of all formats

I don't think Rotel will ever issue a multi format player. After all these years they still haven't got a DVD-A/SACD player. So I certainly wouldn't expect them to make a HD/BR player anytime soon.

Either wait for a multi format HD player or get a SD multi format player to tide you over now.

well since that being the case i may just settle for a cheapy dvd/cd player and purchase a good combo unit later on down the road when one is availible, maybe in a year or so they will have all this figured out. we hope any way.

Go grab yourself a decent upconverting DVD player, like an oppo, and it'll hold you over until we figure out who wins. All I know is that everywhere I go now, I'm seeing advertisements for Blu-Ray. Even if Porn has chosen HD-DVD, this battle is far from over and I'm going to wait for the dust to settle before I make my pick.

Just a simple ?....JUST what if, both formats do survive? Has that crossed anyone's mind??

I plan on getting a PS3 for the blu ray capabilities, as well as, the games of course.. Is it imperative that you be able to play both? Can you not just settle on one high-def format?

I already have both. A PS3 and an XBOX 360 with the add-on(which works great, except for the lack of hdmi) and a Tosh HD-AX1 player. I need to get all three online to get firmware updates done.

well to be honest im planing for the future, i dont have a hd-tv right now but the next one i will be a hd-tv but i bought the one i have last year, and it works fine, but when i do get a hd-tv i want my components to have the hd capability, so i wont have to go buy new components.
