880 and 890 are the same thing except for the IR transmitter which i didn't need. You'll love it. Try it out.

I would wait to see what the capabilities and price of Sideshow enabled remotes will be http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/hands-on-with-a-bunch-of-sideshow-remotes/

Sideshow remote? No thanks, no need for a remote that does anymore than control my gear. The computer is in the next room if I need those abilities, and it has much bigger screens.

I think it depends on what you will ultimately be using the remote for. I have the 890, and am happy with it for controlling the HT. I think it also has the capability of controlling some household items (lights, etc), but I don't use it this way yet.
However, if you want a remote to control lights, window shades, ceiling fans, etc...you would probably want to step it up a notch to the MX-3000. It looks like that one is really designed for a custom "whole-house" install, and you would already know the answer if that is what you are looking for.
EDIT: To answer the second part of your question, I previously had the 880 and returned it, specifically because of the concerns that you have regarding line-of-site issues. With the 890, I have no problems.

thanks i think i will go for the 890 i also am running my hmdi cable to my lcd in the bedroom so i can do dual room sorce and with the 100 feet i can cancle 1 hd cable box this will be sweet. i wonder if i can use my ps3 controller to from my room
The customer service from Harmony(Logitech) is second to none. I had a small issue with my 659 and the CS rep spent a ton of time on the phone with me trying various timings (Had to have the STB turn on last and there is no option on the 659 for turn on sequence) We basically spent 45 minutes adjusting the timing and refreshing the remote. Excellent service from a really caring CS rep.

I have the 890 and I like it a lot. Just don't put the remote in the cradle after turning your system on until the screen shows ready or it will freeze up. Just a little something I learned.

after installing a mx-3000 all i can tell you is Wow, this remote does it all. you can create what ever background, images for buttons etc... It does any type of electronic, lights, shades, recievers, projectors etc.... Kind of a big remote but my customer likes it much better than the 880 he had. i have yet to use an 880 but the 3000 is very sweet. if you can get the 3000 for 544 that is around cost if not below on it.
