I've been tweaking my new set, trying to get standard definition cable programs to look better. FWIW, I found that the S-Video connection from the set top box gave a noticeable improvement over RF. I know this isn't monumental news, but I actually found some programming that showed the clear superiority of the S-Video connection.
Between this, and dropping contrast/color way down in relation to DVD input--the SDTV picture looks fantastic now. To give you an idea of the differences:
DVD (setup w/DVE)
Bright...42
Contrast...38
Color...28
Tint...50/50
Digital cable TV (SDTV)
Bright...64
Contrast...20
Color...18
Tint...50/50
Play with your contrast and color adjustments and you'll get an outstanding SDTV image--it just takes some tweaking/patience.
