CDs You Own of Artists You Don't Like...

Do you own CDs of artists you don't like, but they may have put out a great song(s), so you bought it; however, you think the rest of their stuff is crap?

I've been considering this for several minutes and none come to me. I'm sure if I went through the collection I'd find some but very few. I buy hardly any "Pop" music which reduces the risk!

I'd say there are factors like the above that limit your chances of this happening. How do you go about determining what to buy? Reviews, friends recommendations etc..

Also how picky/demanding are you? Most music IMO serves a purpose or has some redeeming quality. Even if it isn't for me I can usually accept/understand reasons why it might be appealing to others. That is enough for me to have an appreciation and enjoy what I hear. There isn't too much which I really dislike.

Any many ways there is just simple analysis going on when I listen to music in the same way we analyze gear. At least for me.

there are alot of cd`s that I have gotten that only have one song (the reason I got it in the first place) that just sit and don`t get played...

I have been thinking about this subject for the last few days...

I`m going to copy the ones I like and have a big Karma soon...

I have gotten some that I was suprised to find the whole cd is good though

I also have a bunch that I just don`t listen to also...those will be weeded out soon also...

I bought Bare Naked Ladies Rock Spectacle just for "If I had a Million Dollars" When I listened to the rest of the album, I was less than impressed. All the songs sounded alike.

I now make a habit of listening to every song on a new album & if it all sounds the same, I skip it.

That being said, I bought the latest Godsmack CD, as I really like thier drummer, and it sounded just like the last one...just different words

high five! I'm with you man.. i really hate most of what I have.. and within the ones I do have.. very few do I like most of the songs on them.

A few, ex. Nickelback, I always like their singles but nothing else on the albums. Their first cd I liked the single, and one other song...which soon became the second radio hit. Second cd I purchased and only liked one song.

Sell em. I am actually going through all of my cds now and getting rid of the ones I don't like. Have around 250 and am getting close to completion, doing them alphabetically and am on S. Plan on selling what I wont listen to again, already have close to 50 to get rid of.

I would recommend this to anyone, saves time when flipping through if your never going to listen to a bunch of cds. Plus it makes room for others when better cds come along.

I guess im fortunate. I enjoy listening to every one of my cd's. I do not have a big collection but im only buying ones that I know i'll enjoy.

I have a lot of music that I either grew to not like that much (or the reverse - hated at first and grew to love it). My collection is definitely a 'mood' thing - if I'm in the mood for something, I'm happy I have it. On the other hand - I sometimes only get in the mood for something every four years or so... I probably should do some pruning one of these years.

The worst albums are those one hit wonders... where you're sure you'll love the whole thing, but somehow only one track appeared to have everyone awake for the recording sessions.

Impulse buys also used to get me a lot - it's rare to get a great album that way (for me at least). When I used to buy used vinyl every week - my hit/miss ratio was at times very poor. Then again - those days are 15+ years ago - so my average in the last decade has been much better.

I don't buy as much music as I used to - I shifted most of that money over to dvd buying.

That's precisely why I had more 45's than albums. I still rather buy by the song than waste a lot of money on an album that only has one good song on it.

But seriously, when her 1st album came out, I thought the girl had some potential. Now, 8 years later she's another spoiled, silly, talentless brat (unless I guess you count public flashing as a talent...).

Year ago - my wife found a copy of Vanilla Ice's big hit album on cassette while at work. No one claimed it so - it came home with her.

Doesn't count though since we didn't buy it... :-)

I have a "Yes" live CD that has to be one of the worst performances AND sound quality I have ever heard. It's atrocious. It does duty as a beer coaster now.

I have a feeling that if I started buying albums simply based upon their "audiophile quality", I would possess far too many albums which I would detest. As it stands, I love most of what I own -- whether it's reference quality or not.

If it ain't reference quality, I usually sell it or throw it away.

I have 2 opera CDs that I don't really care for, but keep them around so guests can believe we're a bit more sophisticated than we actually are.

A couple of years ago I purged a lot of my "old" CDs because the SQ wasn't there anymore, and I haven't looked back. My gear got better. My taste in music changed, too. Frankly, badly recorded CDs bother the shit out of me nowadays. Oh, virtually all pop music made in the last 20 years sucks, so I don't buy that stuff anyways. Too old, I guess. Yes, I've become a dreaded music snob and make no apologies for it.;)

Sure, I still have a handful of "commercial" CDs, but most of the CDs I own I consider "reference quality." In fact, today I ordered a few more CDs from Telarc and Concord. Oh yeah, I have a bunch of contemporary jazz CDs, but jazz CDs, in general, are recorded much better than the standard pop stuff.

Anybody that's read my musical inclinations on this forum knows that I steer very clear indeed from pop and/or mainstream music. I don't think that's all that's come out in the last twenty years however. There's a wealth of phenomenal music both underground and independent that due to its lower budget can be sometimes construed as "lo-fi". However, both the talent and the creativity are to be had in spades and as a music lover, it's hard to deny their accessability and importance for that very reason.

Like I said... I enjoy the best of both worlds. But as one obsessed with music (and this is what got me into this hobby ultimately), if it ain't got that swing, it don't mean a thing -- be bop she bop be bop ba doo.

You think Leadbelly's recordings were well done? I still wouldn't kick his albums out of bed for getting pop-tart crumbs in the covers...

I've got several albums that I don't like (either never did or not anymore), but I won't get rid of them. A lot of times, I'll buy a CD and not like it, only to give it a listen months or years later and begin to like it. Since I first began purchasing CD's, almost 13 years ago, I've only lost one. I keep all of my albums in the order that I purchased them, unless I buy new albums by a artist I already had which are then placed in chronological order of release by that artist. I can look at my CD collection and see the trends of the music types that I've liked throughout the years: 8th & 9th Grade (1993 - 1995) is stuff like Metallica, Nirvana, Green Day, STP. In 10th Grade (1996-1997) I was into ska and punk stuff like Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish, etc...I don't listen to any of those CD's anymore, but I'll never get rid of them. I've only managed to accumulate about 300 CD's, but my collection is slowly growing.

Personally, I pile drive through my CD's too much to have them in any discernible order. Most are out of the case or in the wrong cases. I have many and I listen to nearly all of 'em. It's funny because I take such meticulous care of everything I own, especially my gear. Not a scratch, smudge, or fingerprint. Kids gloves, amigo...

But when it comes to my CD's, I'm in and out of 'em too much to have anything other than total chaos.

There are albums which I have bought upwards of 6 or 7 times just because I keep losing them. I think I own stock in both Odelay and Disintegration
London Calling has also been purchased far too many times to mention...
as has Loco Live by The Ramones and Rum, Sodomy and the Lash by The Pogues

I promise I'll try better when I start up my vinyl collection:D But then again, I had one in high school with a beater of a record player (only because you could only buy local bands on either 7" or 12" records) and all those albums are either MIA or doubling as wall art:D

Zombie... my vinyl is all in plastic sleeves and has been handled very carefully for years. My cd's (on the other hand) - the jewel cases are in tubs in the basement and the cd's are in two flip cases and four 50 cd spindles (from buying blank cdr's...). lp's are alphabetical - but cd's are obviously all over the place. My cassettes are stored in boxes I rarely dig into - no order there at all. Total collection is somewhere over 2,000 - I quit keeping track a long time ago.

I've given away or sold only a handful of albums - I tend to keep them all.

paul mccartney....run devil run...i only bought it because david gilmour is playing. can't tell by the style he's playing in. kinda like that jeff beck album...crazy legs....what's involved in converting an old pc to music management. i have a hook up on my new plasma i just gotta fill:D

How old is your PC? It would need a CD drive and space on your hard drive. Download iTunes (free), set up MP3 ripping under one of the tabs at least 192 Kbps/44 kHz and try it. My computer is five years old, but I did swap out the hard drives and add a USB 2.0 card which I think is essential. I use MediaMonkey for synching tunes to my players which are Creative/Dell's. You can use your PC to play the tunes and FM transmit them to your stereo. (WholeHouseFMTransmitter.com) or I'm thinking of plugging my laptop directly into my receiver inputs and letting my wireless network do the work. I haven't tried any lossless formats, but I have done digital recording at CD quality and compressed them for portable players.

Oh, good -- I'm glad I'm not alone.

I have purchased a few CDs, sold them, then bought them again a year later and wondered why the hell I sold them in the first place.

I always give a cd a listen at least three times before I sell it off. Incubus Make Yourself is a perfect example, first listen through I thought it was decent with a few good songs. Second time through same thing, decent, only a couple good songs. Let it sit in a cd binder for ~3 months, listened again and loved it. Then again tastes do changes, cds I bought five years ago and thought were great now I think are just awful.
