Received my Pro-Ject Debut III turntable this morning. I feel that I may have now officially passed the point of no return. Lord help me.
The Pro-Ject Phono Box found its way into my lap as well. Actual pics of 'em both playing nice with the rest of the children in the rig soon to come. Along with all impressions, meanderings, droolings, and nonsensical blatherings.

Well, congratulations or condolences, which will it be?:D
Nice table, and shade of green. What cartridge are you using?

It comes with a Ortofon OM 5E - so that for now.

I still have a Denon TT with an OM 5E and they are a very decent cartridge. I had an OM 20 on my Rega. If one desires to upgrade the OM series to a 10, 20, 30 or 40, just buy the stylus and slip it on.

And like I said... so begins the madness:D
I'll be going vinyl hunting this weekend. But per Troy's advise, nothing is getting played until I have the proper cleaning supplies. Any suggestions on the cheap?

KAB has a unit that is basically Nitty Gritty machine but you supply the vacuum for $159. KAB-EV1:
http://www.kabusa.com/frameset.htm?/index.htm
Audio Advisor has their branded Nitty Gritty machine called the Record Doctor III for $229. I have one.

I've read a lot of good things about the Pro-jects. Happy vinyl maddness. Make sure you get that cartridge PERFECTLY aligned, pay special attention to the azimuth.
I'm taking the drapes off my VPI today . . . doing the whole setup thing.
Good luck ZB enjoy it.
PS: YOU NEED TO GET A WET VAC CLEANING SYSTEM . . . DON'T GO ON THE CHEAP WITH IT.

I'll be anxious to hear your thoughts once everything's up and running.
How much set up is required on the turntable before you use it?

Guess, I'll have to bring the Pro-Ject Phono Box as well:D As an aside, the phono pre is rather tiny, but solid.. I knew it would be small, but not that small.
And let the jokes begin.......

Fortunately for a TT newb, the Debut is pretty much plug n' play. In fact, the cartridge already comes installed.
HT... since I'm sure I'll be leaving your home with a wish list that will most assuredly bankrupt me, the least I can do is attempt to return a small portion of the favor.

Can I substitute a potato sack for the "clean smoking jacket"?
Gotta cut corners somewhere...
Thanks for checklist RT

I got a digital scale and Onzow Zerodust stylus cleaner from Sorasound @ Audiogon. I spoke to Mehran before ordering and he did right by me. The Onzow is the real deal, not a fake. http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?anlgcart&1173621091

On the LP cleaner....yeah, I gotta say go VPI 16.5. I had the NG machine. It did a good job but the VPI is MUCH MUCH better. If you go with the NG machine and you have the room to do it, get a cheapie DIRECT DRIVE old table and yank off the arm and use that platform for the scrubbing. Then vaccuum on the NG.
If you'd like to try my cleaning ju-ju (which is Ken's recipe) I can hook you up with the additives to make a gallon. Just add to a gallon of DISTILLED water and viola. I would need you to send me a small leak-proof container.

Pretty soon you will start to have erotic dreams involving tonearms. You will sell your car to buy a record cleaning machine. You will have nightmares involving vinyl-eating molds and bacteria that are going to lay waste to your collection of LPs. You will develop a vinyl cleaning compulsion and start washing your discs like 50 times a day, Then, you will sell your children into bondage, and force your wife into a life of prostitution to pay for that premium Benz moving coil cartridge. You have started down the slippery slope.
In short, you are screwed.

I think that is a very generous offer, and one which I think I'll take you up on. Give me an example of a proper container and I'll see if I can up with something that fits the bill..

This thread went downhill fast:rolleyes:
ZB-try hitting up an REI or similar outdoor store. I've bought small containers there that I use to bring olive oil and other liquids backpacking. Never had one leak, and they're cheap.
Here are some :
