View Full Version : JL Audio?
I'm into JL Audio and I was told if you have the money, spend it on JL. I'm not sure if this is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm fairly knew in this whole audio deal so please help me out.
My friend has a 3000 watt system in his Blazer and it hits hard. I sat in the passenger seat and I could feel and hear the bass pushing. It's loud enough to shake the car next to him. Do you think the JL Audio 13W6v2 would create the same kind of bass his would? Two of those JL subs should create equivalent if not louder bass then his. I believe he has MTX.

MTX makes powerhouse gear. If youre wanting massive output, Id actually go with some high end MTX subs over JL. JL is geared more toward sound quality than sheer output.
Just as I thought. When it comes down to quality vs. high output, I'd have to say quality wins.

There are drivers out there that can deliver both.....
Not to be rude, but...if you are "into JL" why would you go on a competing manufacturer's forum and ask questions about JL product? Before anyone gets deffensive, take this into account...would you go on a Ford forum and ask if they like the Silverado or Ram better? I realize that competitors product gets discussed here. That's all well and good. But when you have 5 posts and one of your first is "I'm into JL Audio and I was told if you have the money, spend it on JL" that just doesn't seem right. Sorry about the rant.

I feel the same way. It seems a little disrespectful to me.
I made this point a while back and got fussed at so now I try to be nice to everybody and so I usually just dont respond to the "I have all Infinity speakers - would MTX be a good amp" threads.

To the original poster.... the general consensus is that JL is overpriced. Good products, but still overpriced.

But if you want to redeem yourself, read up on the Polk SR104/SR124. Great sound quality and better output than the W6v2 ;) .

What's your price range? tell us that and we can probably steer you to things better than JL (Polks SR series being among them ;) )

Polk Audio SR is the best car audio and Polk Audio LSi is the best Home Theater. What's hard to understand about that?

While the SR's are a great product, calling them the best car audio, I believe would not be accurate.

Dollar for dollar they are. I wouldnt run anything else.
Thru the SQ team Im on, I can get crazy hook ups on JL Audio, Zapco and a couple others. I still run Polk because theyre just better.

In what way(s) are they better? What makes a brand the best?
The Rainbows I am running would be very hard to beat at the price point they are sold at.....even by other drivers costing much more. I believe you get a lot of speaker for the money, but I still do not say they are the best. That is a very tall statement to make.

So if Mac (hypothetically...don't freak out) went over to the Clubhouse and said "I'm into Bose and I was told if you have the money, spend it on Bose." what do you think the response would be?

he would get the standard "BLOWS" responses :)
However- education is key too the game. Most sold on bose believe the hype that Bose is better sound through Technology!:p
All I'm saying..is you get mix of folks on here- and you should look at it this way- he is asking us cause he heard folks here kinda knew what they are doing... imagine that?!
Scary I know-

1st - Price point. All of Polk's speakers perform at a level way above what they cost. The $300 Momo's will hold their own with $600 speakers. The $750 SR's will hold their own against $1000+ speakers.
2nd - Build quality. Very well made and durable. Despite overpowering EVERY Polk speaker Ive owned, Ive never had one die on me.
3rd - Sound quality. I love a smooth, natural sound from my speakers. Thats the SR's in a nutshell and the Momo's arent far behind. Theyre a little more "colored" but, for heavy metal at least, it works really well.
4th - The flattest frequency response I know of! Makes it a lot easier to tune (unless youve got a Honda Accord which is cursed by the SQ gods)
I know I bring this up all the time but its such a perfect testimonial - I had a great season last year in MECA and I did it with only a 5 BAND EQ!! And out of those 5 bands, NOT ONE was boosted or cut more than 3 db. Now I know Im a super master tuning genius and all, but Im pretty sure the SR6500's had something to do with it as well. :D
I know it sounds like Im sucking up but Im not. Like I said, there are a lot of other brands I can get great hook ups on and could be using instead, but I dont. ;)
So are they the "best speaker in existance"? No. I do love me a good set of Dyn's and Im sure one of their $3000 component sets could edge out the SR's. But it wouldnt be by a lot and it definitely wouldnt be $2300 worth of improvement.

All those things could easily apply to other companies as well, take Rainbow for example. Their SLC 265's suggested retail price is a tad under $300 dollars, yet they sound better than speakers costing much more. People seem to think of very expensive speakers when they hear Rainbow, but they make many different sets at different price points. I think I would be hardpressed to find anything that would beat out my Germs for the price I paid for them. Still, I do not call them the best.
I know it sounds like Im not sucking up but Im not. Like I said, there are a lot of other brands I can get great hook ups on and could be using instead, but I dont. ;)
Same with me ;).

People who run less expensive components may say the same thing about the SR's, or any other speaker in that same price point. All comes down to how much the actual improvement in sound is worth to the person. I've read on different boards where people have actually switched from the SR's to something else they felt sounded better. There are other speakers out there in the same price point that can hang, still they are not the best speaker. Maybe best for that persons application and their ears.
I myself am very hesitant to call something the best, specially when there are so many other choices out there (granted most probably wont be better).... I guess it's kind of like saying X car is the best....not really if what you need is a truck.

OK then. We'll just agree to disagree. I think Polk SR's are among the best speakers on the market - you dont think anything is the best. :p
Besides, if Rainbow were so good, why couldnt they think up a less wimpy name? Why not call themselves "Powederpuff Audio?" :D :p

I think the translation from German to English is something like fiery dragon, as someone had stated here. ;)
I actually have been looking at the SR's. I have listened to them on several ocassions and really liked what I heard. I will need another set of components at some point in the near future, and they certainly are one of the sets on top of my list.

It really depends on what you're looking for. JL Audio has great subs if you're looking for sound quality. For the price, MTX, Audiobahn, RE Audio, and Orion subs are going to hit harder but they might not be as clear sounding. If you have the money I'd check out Focal Subs. They're going to cost a lot but Focal is right at the top of car audio.

I think JL makes nice subs. I think the W6v2 is a very good sub that is very well rounded. I also like the offerings from Image Dynamics.
