Just released this week. I bought the special edition which has a DVD with it for $14.98 at Best Buy. I've listened to it twice all the way through. It didn't overwhelm me. The music and lyrics are definitely Norah's style. Sometimes, I've got to listen to a CD several times before it grabs me. At this point, I'll rate this release as just average. My perspective may change in the next couple of weeks.
Any other Norah fans??
I have the first two cds, gorgeous woman, nice voice but I think she peaked on her first cd, hope I am wrong, I probably will skip this one, enjoy

I am deeply dissapointed of her current album. I supposed I have a different expectation of what I like her to focus on. She is definitely moving to the pop mainstream. This album is rather dark. I think I can scratch her name from my must buy list from now on.

Yep. She's a very talented lady. Be sure to check out some of her less known work, The Little Willes-S/T and The Peter Malick Group w/Norah Jones - New York City. Both showcase her in a very different light.

Just picked this up. So far so good, but not blowing us away. Have to give it a few more listens.

I have the 2 disc version also. It's ok but nowhere near the perfection of the first album or even as good as her second. I love her though.

I listenen to the first Norah Jones album and found it to be some of the most boring music I had heard. I thought it sucked. After all the gushing from almost everywhere about how great it was, I gave it a second chance, thinking it was just a bad day and maybe I was wrong. On second listen I determined it was a very well recorded album with boring, bad music and it still sucked. I'm glad I didn't buy it. I didn't buy the second and I won't be buying the third.

polkatese I'm with you. I thought this album was horse dribble.
Real disappointing.
I think Ms. Jones has a natural, pure talent in the jazz arena if she would only stay in there and stop with the drift to hillbilly music. She obviously is not good at songwriting as the songs on this album are not very musical. Nothing wrong with that. There's plenty of professional writers out there just begging for a natural voice and talent to perform their songs.
The engineers know how to put her voice right down front. Other than that, they missed it on the detailed stage behind her and it all blends together.
There are a couple songs that are OK but for the most part this is the most overhyped underwhelming cd release I can remember.
Actually,
I like her music when my ex-wife sings it. They actually look a little alike too.

She has a unique voice. Her first album were songs mostly written by other people and she was just performing them. I suspect since all 3 albums seem to follow the exact same theme and musical structure that her label has a heavy influence over what she releases. It still remains to be seen if she was/is a one time muscial phenomenon or will have some longevity. I agree with F1, the 2 releases he sites are her best as is the Live in New Orleans dvd and, her first release, for what it is, is pretty good.
I suspect Joss Stone is going to have the same problem. She has a very distinctive style that is easily recognizeable and going to be hard to shake. If these two could take some notes form a performer like Jewel, who is the first to admit she got a lucky break, but she now has the freedom to do what she wants without a label forcing her to do things the same over and over. I guess when you sell over 20 million units you have a bit more control over your own destiny.
I'd really like to see both Norah and Joss spead their wings a bit. Perhaps they just don't have the level of talent to pull off anything other than the narrow focused body of work they seem to be repeating over and over.

That's what makes horse races , I guess. I loved her first album and it's almost my favorite all time. I guess that's hard to live up to as I am not alone.

My point exactly, Normanality. Who could put up with her current shit after her rendition of "The Nearness of You" on her first album.
Hope she grows on you, Carl. For me, I'll stick around with Tierne Sutton and Cheryl Bentyne for the time being :p

Actually,
I read in Down Beat a couple of years ago that she signed with the label she is with because Diane Reeves is on the label and has so much freedom. According to this article, She is doing what she wanted from day 1. I for one would also like to hear her sing more Jazz and Blues for that matter. That's just not where she is at right now. She will come back to it though I think because that is her roots. She was such a "Jazz Snob" (her words) that she wants to explore a little. Give her time man, that talent will shine through. ;)

agreed she has talent and a lovely voice. it will be intresting as she grows older to see whether she gets better or like a lot of artists simply fade away. REGARDS SNOW

Her music seem to lack deep emotion. Things that would grab you and make you listen.

Disappointed as well.

This is exactly why I love her first album, besides being infatuated with her, I felt the 1st album was brimming with emotion especially "Come Away With Me" and " I've got to see you again"

Her first album was boring, no emotion, and uninteresting. If I had insomnia it might work to put me to sleep...I'm glad I don't need it.

Norah Jones is indeed talented. I have Jesse to thank for the intro. Currently I own 3 of her CD's and will probably buy another along with a few other things this year.

She does it for me, however, I have fallen asleep a few times while listening to her, I am still trying to figure out if this is a good thing or not.

I thought it was a well recorded album, and she has a great voice, but it might just be two or three doses of valium too mellow.
michael_w
02-10-2007, 05:31 AM
Yes, it's mellow but it seperates it from her other work a little more. I actually like this album as well as her others. I haven't decided whether I'll actually buy it or not. Her cds are a treat to spin just to hear the smooth vocals on the lsi's. It's always nice to have well recorded material.

Sorry to revive an older thread, but I found this Onion article appropriate:

"This third album is a great first effort," said Billboard columnist Emmanuel Stevens, adding that he looks forward to watching someone with such raw potential mature as an artist. "Hopefully, she won't suffer from a sophomore slump seven albums from now."

That's good stuff ohskigod:
"The Guardians said recent developments in the music world, such as the unaccountable popularity of the Dixie Chicks and Sufjan Stevens, have created a 'perfect storm of lameness' from which rock might never recover. While Iommi refused to say when the vault would be opened, hard rock sources believe it will take place just prior to next month's Fall Out Boy–Honda Civic tour, which many fear will suck the remaining lifeblood from all that still rocks."

I like Norah's latest albulm. Most new CD's will have one or two songs that I like a lot and the rest have to grow on me. But with this lastest one from Norah Jones, I immediately liked all of them.
I really like the intimacy of the recording itself. To me, it feels like you are right in the room with the musicians.
It is a little "darker" than her previous work. I really love the song about "We're gonna be sinking soon". For some reason, I immediately thought about the city of New Orleans when I heard that song. I don't know if that is what she had in mind when she wrote it or not.

I personally am disappointed with all of her albums so far.......Like someone said earlier in this thread her record company has too much influence over what she puts out, and it shows. Her platinum plaque for Come Away With Me looks cool as hell though, my buddy has one hanging in his appt.
