Proposed new A/V stand...

Alright fellow Polkies, as many of you know, in the last couple of weeks with recent purchases, I've room out of room in my current a/v stand that I built. Well below is a jpeg file of a AutoCAD file with the current stand I'm designing and getting ready the build. I'd like to hear what you guys think of this design. All wood used will be 3/4" white oak and all shelves will be adjustable. I also plan on designing the back of the cabinet with cable run channels so I can seperate the power cords from the a/v cables. If you guys have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Here is option #2. I have removed the small section in the center and just placed the XBOX 360 on top of the center speaker. Before anyone says to make the shelf 3 shelves wide, I can't. I roughly only have 4-1/2 feet to work with width wise and roughly 3'-3" in height to the bottom of the screen.

I absolutely love it. Everything thats been said about it in the reviews is very true. I ordered mine from OlkiePolkie here on the forum. Give him a shout, he may be able to cut you a deal on one.

I like #1 but your x360 is going to be starved for air. Make sure there is plenty of room for airflow, the 360s get super hot

Well, picked up the lumber yesterday for my new stand, by the way, going with option #1, thanks for you inputs. Anyways, got all the lumber ripped down and cut yesterday afternoon, so now it's time to start all the pain in the ass things, like ripping the dattos for the bottom shelf, and drilling the holes in the side peices for the adjustable shelves. I will take pics of the whole build process when I get the chance so everyone can follow the build with me.

I've been thinking about the whole adjustable shelf thing and would like your opinions again. Instead of drilling what seems like hundreds of holes in the side peices for the adjustable shelves I came up with another idea and I'd like to hear what you guys/gals think. I was thinking instead of drilling the holes I would just datto a vertical datto on all the side peices and flush mount some brass Pilaster Strips. I think it would be alot faster than drilling the holes and then I could use the brass Pilaster clips for a more secure fit. Here is a link to what I'm talking about.

I know how you guys/gals like to say threads are worthless without pics so who am I to disappoint. This is what I got done yesterday. Notice the brass palister, this is what I was talking about earlier in the thread, a whole lot faster and easier than drilling holes.

One thought: Are you going to put another sheet on the bottom to make the base flush? Or maybe another foot in the middle? I can imagine it might bow otherwise.

The only question I would have is what the load bearing ability of those notches are? Will they be able to bear heavy components?

Dane, as far as putting another bottom on it, negative, when I build these av stands I always put six (6) casters on the bottom, 1 in each corner and 2 down the center which prevents it from bowing. Anonymouse, apparently these Pilaster are designed to be used on bookcases so I'm hoping they will be pretty sturdy. The heaviest peice of gear I own is the 7700 amplifier which will be on the bottom shelf so that shouldn't be a problem. The next in line as far as weight goes is the pre/pro which is close to 30 lbs. and I'm more than certain it will hold the weight of the pre/pro.

I don't feel it will be an issue at all, my thinking is if weight was distributed evenly that may hold up to 100lbs. The clip and force will on close to side rail this helps the clip in holding this much weight.

Okay, finished the front and sides for the day. Also got all the shelves cut. Possibly tomorrow I'm going to start routing the edges and begin sanding. Here is a pic of what I got done today.

Lookin' good! When you say you're planning something, you really mean it! I saw your first post of the concept drawing and a few days later you are well into the build. Good Job, indeed!!

As far as the shelf mounts, I would not worry a bit about the weight capacity. As long as the shelf is sized as large as possible without binding, those things hold massive amounts. Especially if you get the more angular (think like a roof truss style) clips (not the level ones like in your Lowe's link.) I'd be worried about cracking a shelf in half before those clips failed. I have sat on a thick shelf supported by those standards and the brass/metal clips that go with them. Now, I'm not what you'd call large, but none of your components weigh as much! :p

That's great you can make your own cabinets any size shape style or color you want. I bet there are a lot of guy's who could use a custom made cabinet and best of all it's better than store bought.

Yeah, keeps me out of trouble with the wife when I'm out in the shed building furniture. This is like the 5th a/v stand I've built in the last year. Every time I build one someone comes along and wants to purchase it and then I end up building another one.

That is one pretty A/V stand.I can't wait to see the finished product. This is one thing I have always wanted to do, but lacked the woodworking skill to actually complete. I can design on AutoCad all day long, but building something like this is out of my reach.

Here are some recent pics taken today on the status of my new a/v cabinet.

Second picture is what I like to call my "wookshop of wooden wind chimes". The third picture is how I notched the back so all the audio and video cables will be seperate from the power cables. The forth picture is of the back I built, notice I will still be able to access the back of the components. Final sanding and final coat of clear is being sprayed on tomorrow and it will then come in the house on Sunday but it will sit idle till Tuesday to give it a couple of days to cure inside.

Nope, I spray it with an airgun. The Polyurethane I'm using is the Fast-drying Minwax.

Well, just finished spraying on the last coat of Poly. Can't wait till this afternoon to see how eveything turns out. I'll post some new pics of the final once I get the stand in the house.

Mmmm sprayed on clear coat.......I almost passed out last time I used sprayed clear coat. :rolleyes: I was up in the clouds for quite a while....I guess when the label says to use a mask you probably should.
