Without knowing your gear......................With the feed reel on the left and takeup/empty reel on the right, the tape should come off the outside of the left reel and feed to the outside of the right reel. The reels move counterclockwise when in play mode.

The tape should simply slide against the heads/rollers from the underside of the head area. This should be done when player is not in play mode, its okay if it is turned on, but reels need to turn freely. In play mode, rollers are engaged to hold the tape against the heads. In this mode, these rollers are in the way of putting a tape in place.

I hope I helped some............

Thanks Dennis I got it now, it's an akai GX 220D, seems to work but the output is very low, probably needs a tune up.

There is usually a picture or drawing somewhere on the unit displaying the threading procedures.

Yeah I plugged it in to a Fisher 500C and a boom box....Same result on both units.

The azimuth (alignment) of the tape to heads is most likely off some. This affects volume.
