Rti8's and PSW 12

I have a set of rti8's and a psw12 sub and am using a hk 3480 stereo amp to power everything. I can barley hear the subwoofer over the rti8's(Can hardly detect any significant lows deeper than what the 8's can do). When I turn up the main volume on the receiver or in back of the sub it is just adding a pounding muffly effect to the entire sound stage. When I turn off the sub it sounds much more cleaner and punchier. What could the problem be?

Does your receiver allow for you to play with the Xover? If not, you may want to hook up your speakre cables from the receiver to your sub then from the sub to your towers and play with the xover on the sub.
