To be completely honest, it all depends on what deals you can find.

For amps- look at the lower grade models from Carver, B&K, NAD, Rotel, etc.

Pre-Amps... same company. Though for $107.00 I highly recommend the AMC 1100 pre-amp :)

Consider a new cd source.....be it a high end cd player or a sacd player

You wont need to spend an ungodly amount of money on those things. Keep at least $300-400 left over for your speaker wire and interconnects.

For that budget, man, you can get an AWESOME system...

For $300, if I look at the best deals I ever made, and it could take awhile to find deals like this, I would use the Luxman CD player with tube output I found for $99 with no remote found at a blowout sale and the $200 dollar 200 watt per channel Soundcraftsmen amp which an ebay seller bought a bulk load of then refurbished. It can be done if you are willing to do the looking and take your chances! BTW, the $99 Luxman is still my CD player of choice which I have used everyday for the last 5 years.

parasound amps can often be found on the cheap.
I had an 750 that I picked up for $200 which can drive 4Ohm
and knocked the socks off my 800is.
