The Sweet 16 is set. Now the preliminary BS is over and the real tourney begins for teams that actually have a legitimate chance to win it all. This year there are no real Cinderellas. Lowest seed to get to the 16 is UNLV at a 7. Regardless of what the talking heads would like us to believe about top to bottom pairity in College BB these were very normal region results when compared to the past. While lower seeds sneak in evey year, the Sweet 16 is usually dominated with teams in the top 8 of the regions. One region survived intact (West) with the 1,2,3,4 seeds advancing, and the South was close with the 1,2,3,5 seeds moving on. The East was 1,2,5,6 and the Mid-West was 1,3,5,7. Seven of the top 8 seeds advanced. Only twice since the 64 team tourney started have all 8 top seeds advanced to the Sweet 16. On the other hand, this is only the second time a double digit seed has not reached the Sweet 16.
Strongest Conference? Here is the conference breakdown for the final 16 teams.
ACC - 1
Conference USA - 1
Missouri Valley - 1
Horizion League - 1
Mountain West - 1
Big Ten - 1
Big East - 2
Big 12 - 2
Pac 10 - 3
SEC - 3
Not too many suprises and the higher seeds generally are faring well. 5,6,7 teams winning is not that big of an upset. It's time for the big boys to duke it out!
