Best recordings for SDA ?

A question for you SDA afficionados. If someone comes
over to your house who has never heard of the SDA
technology and you want to show off your system,
what cd are you going to play? Which cd's have the
best SDA imaging?

Deep Forrest - Both disks I have, not sure of the names

Some more that come to mind are any of Diana Krall's cd's and Linda Ronstadt with Nelson Riddle. Another one that's really well defined is Karen Carpenter's "I Can Dream Can't I?" from the "Horizon" cd - very well recorded! Bob James' "We're All Alone" from his "Heads" cd has great definition. And Deodato's "Theme from 'Star Trek'" on his "Very Together" cd will impress anyone!

Thanks for the info. I have Diana Krall's Live dvd, have
you compared that to her cd's for imaging? I get
great imaging from speaker to speaker, what I
have trouble getting is imaging from outside my speakers.
I get it on Dark side of the moon, especially track 2 but
I'd like to hear more.

I may in the future but for right now, I have to use
my SDA's in a home theatre setup and use a
5:1 receiver. Someday I may set them up in a
stereo setup with seperates amps. I'm very happy
with the way they sound but I would like to hear
more imaging from outside the speakers. I'm sure more
power would help with the SDA affect. Do you regularly
get the SDA imaging outside your speakers?

It depends on the recording, but mostly I'd have to say yes. Like I told you before the 2's are best at 6' apart. Just a idea...go to a hi-fi shop and act like you want to buy seperates, ask them to let you take them home to try out (they will want a credit card deposit) and see if you get more "effect." Next, return the stuff and start saving up to buy them.

What kind of money are we talking about for seperates?
How about used stuff on ebay? What kind of power
do your seperates have?

We discussed alot of this via email about a month ago. I would think you could get some seperates on eBay for $1000-$2000.00.
New, $2000/2500 and up. Rotel makes some nice stuff for reasonable money. I've got some vintage 1989 Sony ES seperates at @ 200 wpc. That was more than enough to drive my 2B's but, I want more to drive the 2.3TL's. The thing is seperates just get the job done better with clean power and the SDA's like clean power. Oh yeah, B&K is good too.

I do remember our conversation, unfortunately I did not
save that email and I forgot the specifics of the
equipment you have. Unless I hit the $122 million California
lottery tonight, I won't be buying seperates for awhile.
In the past 6 months, I've bought the Onkyo receiver,
Polk SDA2's, CS400i center and 450 sub. They make a great
HT setup and a damn good music setup. I'm having to compromise
between music and movies. The U-571 dvd rocks my house
and music dvd's sound awesome too. The seperates will have
to wait but I would love to hear what kind of a difference they
would make. Your idea to borrow some is an interesting one.

SEAL: any of his CD's, His voice is a dead center and the percussion effects are all over the place. Instrument seperation is very precise.

Old jazz, like Oscar peterson and Lester young gives you such a overwhelming presence, it scares the crap out of you.

Find some stuff your old lady likes too, this helps you out in keeping them and for any upgrades you may need. :)

Thanks for the tips. I listened to Graceland yesterday and
it was awesome. Diamonds on the soles of her shoes
sounded great. It's eerie how the vocals get put dead
center. On music dvd's, I can switch between stereo
and surround and sometimes when I'm set to stereo,
the vocals sound more centered than on surround
even though the vocals on surround come out of the
center channel!
I don't have any Oscar Peterson but have lots of
Monk, Coltrane and Miles. I'll try them out today.
