I finally got around to it, so I took a few pictures of my setup...here it is!

I owe great thanks to many of you who advised me, and this is the outcome! :D

Cheers!

Looks good. Congrats and enjoy.

Thanks Janmike, I enjoy it everyday!! The only upgrade I would like to do is the Yamaha as a pre/pro, I know it's an excellent product, I liked it even before I acquired the Parasound, and I know I can do much better, but right now, it's superb, and I have no itch to upgrade...yet!

I used to own a Yamaha RX-V1500. Then I added a two channel Rotel amp. Then I changed to a 5 channel Proceed amp. After that I had to swap out the Yamaha for a Proceed Pre. I have never looked back. I have LSi's for my 5.1 HT. Once you start, you're done. Good luck!

PS - I wonder how long the Bose will stay?

Congrats on the nice setup. Is your TV the Panasonics rear-projection 61" LCD PT-61LCX65? If so, I have the exact same TV in my home theater. :)

How'd you get the center channel to stay balanced on top of the TV?

Nice clean setup was my thought as well. You actually have space to move, I am jealous.

Congrats,

I'd upgrade the sub before the Pre/Pro. Looks very nice though! :D

Well, for now the Bose do the job as the surrounds, since the $$ that I spent upgrading pretty much everything else except the TV broke my bank  But nevertheless, I like my Yamaha, and when I"ll upgrade, I'll probably move to the C2 controller by Parasound as well, you know, keep it in the family. Ideally my ultimate system will include JM Labs Utopia BE or Sonus Fabers Cremona, but I'm dreaming...

Janmike, you're from The Northwest Territories?? Cool a fellow Canadian, I grew up in London, Ontario...but somehow ended up in sunny Florida

Yes jwhitakr, I have the same TV as yours, and as far as balancing the center channel, well I went to home depot and got 20" of those white metal shelves you see in the closets and such. I then got some braces anchored them so that the CC is positioned right above the top of the TV. Really cheap solution ($30 or so), you can't see the shelf from the front, only if you look at it from the sides.

Yep, I knew this question will come up, it's actually a High Def antenna for my local channels, so I decided to pay one time $45 versus $8/month to get the locals in high def...Besides, I believe that my antenna gives me better 1080i/720p resolution for the local channels than BrightHouse/Comcast or Dish/DirectTV

I actually grew up in Brampton, ON. I remember going to hockey games in London to see Western play York back in the 70's. I went to York. Awesome campus at Western. Good old Jamie Bone days when he was the QB for the football team at Western.

Many thanks goes to you guys (especially dane_petersen, who was the first to advise me) I really appreciate your comments! Boy, am I glad that I listened, come to think of it, I was initially driving my LSI fronts with a receiver!!! Wheh, rookie...

Yeah, I really like the space that I have, and right now I'm playing with the positioning of the speakers, a very tricky thing I'm finding. I'm trying to get them in the 'elusive' equilateral setup where the listening position is the 3rd point, but I'm yet to succeed. Right now, I'm experimenting with the fronts being tilted upwards a bit, probably around 1 to 3 degrees (actually I used the included spikes to tilt them). What do you guys think, should I keep them level to the ground or incline them?

Hey, so you've driven up and down 401 quite a few times as well eh?? Cool, I actually graduated from UWO, and back then I was considering Waterloo, MacMaster, UofT and York as well for my higher education...Yes, Western had a great football team, not sure how well they're doing nowadays, lost touch you know

Nice setup. Congrats! I love the look of those Parasound Halo products.

Yes, I totally agree, I looked, compared, researched, and for a while I was leaning towards Outlaw products for the best bang for your buck, but I was secretly wishing a Parasound amp for build and sound quality, looks, etc. I then stumbled into this great deal on the Parasound from Audiogon, and I couldn't pass it up, and the rest is history...

Ahh, good idea and cheap too! I may have to try something like that too. I'm not a big fan of having my center channel underneath the TV in the TV stand, but it's really the only option with my current setup.

The only thing I'm not sure about with trying out your approach is nailing or drilling something into the basement wall... not sure that would pass the WAF test. ;)

Thanks for the info, enjoy your new setup!

Well here is my reasoning:
1) since our TVs are kind of big, there aren't many other places we could put them.
2) the wall behind the TV is not being used anyways, and the TV will hide the shelf just fine
3) but moving the CC up on top, you can free up space from under the TV for other gear, probably more expensive, but again this may be a moot point since more $$ will be involved so you might not get 'pre approved' by your better half

If you want, I can take some pics of how I've done it, it might prove useful, at least as a leverage point...:D

Ohh yeah, Tim Hortons!!! Sure miss that, but who in the world is Don Cherry LOL:eek: Btw, is he still doing Hockey Night In Canada?? Now that I really really miss, hockey is not so big in FL, especially since the Gators won both basketball and football

Nice, clean setup man! FWIW, in a room that big I'd go with just an inch of toe-in. VERY NICE.

You know, I was thinking the same about the 'toe in' effect. I'm however a bit confused as I once read in Stereophile magazine that when listening to stereo, the images dispersed from each speaker should merge/coincide in the middle, as if an imaginary floating sphere exists right in front of the listening position; I think the writer even said that you shouldn't even distinguish each speaker per se, the sound coming off each speaker should bond with the sound coming from the other. So if I don't toe them in, it seems to me like the images float by my ears and there's no middle concentric image. How do you guys have your LSI setup, toed in just a bit and slightly angled upwards?

Nice. Now you need two more LSi15s for the rear.

Try to angle the center speaker down so that it points directly towards the main audience seating, and see if that makes a differance.

I have a stand for the center speaker in front of the TV. If the movie is letter-boxed I adjust the speaker up so that the top of the speaker is at the bottom of the movie. If the movie is 16x9 then I lower the speaker so that the top is at the bottom of the screen. Along with 2 door stops under the speaker to angle it up, it really makes a differance in sound imaging.

I wish I had a room that big. With that nice wide wall, I would get rid of the ceiling fan and install a projector. If you had a projector and screen then you could use a LSi15 as the center behind the screen.

The nice thing about HT is that it is never quite right. There is always something to do and/or buy.

It all depends on the speakers. Some speakers need more toe in than others to acheive the effect you are describing. If the speakers have very good horizontal dispersion, you may not need any toe in and will still have a good "floating" image. I usually start out with my speakers with no toe in at all and listen to them for several weeks that way with different recordings. Then I may toe them in very slightly and listen for a while with the new setup. Sometimes it takes a little patience to find that "majic" spot where they image best.

Tn_Polk_Lover: I agree, it takes lots of patience, so what I'll do is bring them back so they're almost perpendicular to the listening position, take a listen for a few days and slowly toe them in till I find that 'floating' image.

How about tipping them back a little (ie. raise the front spikes a few inches) so they fire a little upwards towards the ceiling not parallel to the ground?

I've never experimented with tilting speakers up or down, so I don't really have an opinion on that.
