OK,I need more advice on this, the sub is a 2001 sub and he says that it's not a PCi or a PC plus,so what is the rating on this sub amp?I know the PCi had a 300 or so watt bash amp and the plus a 525 watt amp.Does any of this matter? Will I still get the same powerful sound out of this one compared to the others?

danger boy
04-11-2007, 12:43 PM
it may just be a PC SVS subwoofer.. I think the only difference betweent the PC and PCi was the "i" stood for improved driver. that should be the only difference. SVS updated their drivers around that time.. 2000, 2001 IIRC

powerlord

So still a good deal at the new price of 325.00?

I now own an SVS PC 20-39,I hope it's everything everyone says it is!My bass has been lacking for some time.:DYou're gonna have plenty of bass. SVS will probably let you upgrade to the newer driver as well at a reasonable price (if you ask nicely and give them the serial number). Congrats...

Thats great! Then it would be a PC+ right?Except maybe for the amp?Would you go for the plus 12.3 upgrade or the NSD?

Ron Temple

Thats great! Then it would be a PC+ right?Except maybe for the amp?Would you go for the plus 12.3 upgrade or the NSD?You'll be able to get the NSD driver. The Plus requires 3 ports not the single you'll have. Still the NSD is supposed to be as good as the 12.2 Plus driver which is pretty stellar.

My first reaction when I saw this was Whoa, that sure is big!And then he was nice enough to let me demo this thing with a pair of Snell Type C/V's,and a host of Jolida seperates. The sub was in the middle of the room so there was no proper setup to speak of,I was impresssed at the bass it added to the Snells,he didn't have the sub set up properly so the real demo will be this evening,I just went through heel surgery friday so I'm still trying to get it into the house, this guy knew nothing about audio setup,he inherited all his gear from his father, and he's selling almost all of it,he even had a real nice set of Proac studio speakers I fell in love with,so if any of you two channel polkies want to get in contact with this guy just shoot me a PM and I'll hook you up with him.He has some very nice gear!:D

I can't thank you guys enough, what a sub!I put a pic of the SVS kicking the RSP912 out of it's house and moving in, on my system showcase,I have the sub at just under 1/2 volume,0 degrees out of phase, with the x-over wide open and the boost at 3db.I just played the napalm scenes on We were soldiers, the take off scene from Apollo 13,and the brontosaurus stampede on King Kong and all I can say is i wish i would have listened to the advice of others a long time ago,I thought this SVS talk was all hype, and I was so wrong, this is a beast! And to top it all off,the damn thing is actually musical,I am in bass bliss,I'll talk with you guys later,I got movies to watch!:D

They are pretty awe inspiring :D . Awhile ago, I'd had mine for a couple of months, I got a chance to try out a Velo DD15 for a month...a great sub. Imagine my surprise, the Velo was slightly superior, subjectively, in music (I mean that it was tighter and blended better, but not everyone would agree that it was just slight), but just couldn't hold a candle to the SVS in the bass blockbusters that really bring it. For the difference in price, it's definitely not a dog musically and priceless for that HT kick on a budget.

Enjoy

I love this sub!I have another question though,my recievers X-over is set at 80hz and you can't change that,do I bypass the reciever x-over and use the sub x-over wide open?Or should I just go with the recievers.I'm running it wide open right now and recieving alot of bass.

danger boy
04-12-2007, 01:41 PM
turn it down at the sub... most subs are set to about 10 O'clock on the volume knob.

Ron Temple
04-12-2007, 01:46 PM
If your receiver has a fixed xover then opening up the xover on the sub is correct if there's no bypass on the amp. Later models have a crossover bypass switch. If it's too much you might try staggering the cross on the sub to 70 and letting the rollof between the sub and receiver blend. You may get cancellation...experiment and see how it sounds.

powerlord
04-12-2007, 01:56 PM
Thanks guys, yes there is a bypass switch so I'll bypass the sub amps x-over and run it open. And I'll mess with the volume. It's hard to stay out of the volume with this sub!

LOL, someone is enjoying their new sub! Good man!

BTW, I have the PC-Ultra. It's an absolute dream!

Now, if you have the original Star Wars (Episode 4) on DVD, put it in, crank it up and enjoy the Star Destroyer flying overhead in the opening scene. Oh yeah, about 3-4 seconds before the Stormtroopers blow open the door on the rebel ship, feel the serious lowend rumble!

You're about to have alot of serious fun re-discovering your movie collection. I have! :D

It's absolutely sick what this thing can do.

Alot of my movie viewing is at night and I have to keep the volume lower. What really impressed me is how full the Ultra sounds even at lower volume.

Congrats on your sub!

Well with a little bit of pleasure there must be pain, the sub is cutting on and off now.I never got the volume above 1/2 and double checked the cables and power chord,it comes on for a couple of minutes then goes off,it thumps on turn on and turn off, anyone got any clues here?I love this sub and if it needs to be repaired then so be it,I still say money well spent. This sub was manufactured in 2001 so maybe the old power supply is ready for the graveyard,I don't know.Should I get in touch with SVS? I have the original reciept.Or just go with a local electronics repair?:(

His reply was "I have never had a problem with it".And the guy has over 3000 feedback on ebay at 99%.It sounded fine at his place and didn't cut out,so I can't go pointing fingers now. There were two other guys there watching us demo this. And it wasn't doing this last night or this morning, everything has it's time,I might have pushed it a little too hard who knows on the bass mekanik cd.I'm thinking a local electronics repair would be alot cheaper than shipping this back, plus there is no warranty on it anymore.I also thought it may be the voice coil on the sub.

The guys at SVS rock! They are sending me a new bash amp at cost,it should be here next week sometime, and this will be an upgrade, the amp in this earlier model is a 200 watter, the new is 325 watts and after looking at the sub inside and letting the tech know what it looks like he said it sounds like a 12.3 sub,it's a silver cast basket triple stack magnet,so it seems as though the previous owner upgraded the sub, maybe that could be the reason for the failure, who knows?!:D

Strong Bad
04-13-2007, 05:13 PM
Thats awesome! Polk and SVS are dead on with their Customer Service Depts.

A 200 watt amp in the sub really is underpowered. The extra power will definitely help. BTW, my PC-Ultra has a 525 watt amp. It's really sick! The new subs they designed that are coming out around July are going to be insane!!!

Essentially, with the new amp and the newer driver, you'll have a pretty up to date sub compared to the ones being sold currently.

Have fun test driving it with the new amp!

Oh yeah, I'm more stoked now than I was when I first got it,now I'll have more power and I've got an upgraded subwoofer,so I should really be awestruck! The 325.00 I spent and the 150.00 for the amp gives me a new 20-39 for much less than a new one, worked out great!:p

By summers end, the new ones will be out. The new PC-Ultra is supposed to have the new 13.2" driver with a 700 watt amp.

Sick man....REAL sick! SVS has done well with their subs up to this point and I have no doubt these will not disappoint.

Chime back in when you get your current one rolling again.

OK guys I had to put the pics of the before and after amp in my system showcase, the new amp weighs about 4 lbs. the old amp with the huge transformer weighed about 12 lbs. SVS lost my money order so I just got it today, and they didn't provide me with the + and - terminal wires for the amp so I have to go get some spades that will fit it.I'm kinda worried at how light and insignificant this new amp is.Must be some magic in there to get 325 watts out of it.:)

Strong Bad

Thanks alot bro,I was going to call you guys and thank you tomorrow. The sub I have now and the new NSD are the same impedance right? This thing goes very low now, seems it didn't do that before.Would the upgrade from the sub I have now to the NSD be worth it? The NSD woofer is a large upgrade from your original woofer. It has more linear stroke, higher thermal power handling, lower distortion, and more output.
