I wanted to live with my new amp for a while before posting my thoughts. This is my first experience with an external amplifier. I had wanted an amp for my system for a very long time and last month finally got one.
I bought an almost new B&K 7250 series II off Ebay, the original owner bought it as a left over last October. I am using Audioquest Sidwinder inter connects and did not change speaker wire. So far I am very happy with my purchase. This thing barely fits in my rack and is built like a tank. And the quality 5 way binding posts are a nice change from the receiver world I was used to.
The B&K sound is just what I wanted for my RTi-10s, it has tamed the highs just enough and gives them the power they needed. Now they are not fatiguing when listening to music. Plus I can turn the sub off and get the full, rich, smooth sound I knew these speakers were capable of.
They can also kick out a lot bass for movies when needed. I tried running without a sub for movies and they reach surprisingly low. I now run them as large and the sub as plus and it added a big kick. It was noticeable enough that my wife commented on it which she never does.
I also found what I read is true, that is you don't need as much volume to get the details. An example, before during a movie when dialog was low I would have to increase the volume to hear it. Then when the dialog went loud again I had to decrease the volume so it wouldn't blow me out of the room. Now I can leave the volume at a comfortable level and I always hear the details without having to juggle the volume.
Next on my wish list is a B&K Ref 50 to replace my receiver, then a nice CD player. Until then I am going to slowly upgrade my other interconnects. I hope when B&K releases their new pre the prices on used ones will drop to my price range. I always knew this would be a good move for my system and I appreciate the comments and knowledge I gained here.
