I know I'm way early -

Just re-relocaed to the Virginia area last year and wondering if we have any whitetail hunters in the club? Any suggestions for good public land?

Looking to pick up something in the long gun dept and looking at the new .270 WSM vs. just the tried an true plain ole .270 Winchester. Experience with either?

I used to shoot a 7mm Wby Mag but that's certainly overkill here - is the .270? and should I just be going out and grabbing a 30/30?

Thanks!

I just be going out and grabbing a 30/30

Would be my first choice, after a bow. :D

The 270 is a nice round. I use a 308.

I hear you. Simple, light, and effective.

I've been doing some checking since I got back - would you believe you can hunt during gun season with a crossbow here in VA?

Things have changed a bit since I hunted regularly...

Mmmmm... yes - I was thinking that too...

I was looking at .308 my debate was actually like this -

7mm (again) .308 and .270 - I just like the flatter cartridge - (without the bang of the 7mm that is) - .308 is up there though - short action too...

When I lived in Florida I hunted with a pistol - 44 Mag Thompson Center Contender and a 30/30 Winchester lever.

That's a new one, pretty sure they're banned here. Although, you can slap a scope on a Super Redhawk and go to town.

270 is very good, though alot more punishing than a 308. Personally, I like .243 for whitetail in states where sub .30 is allowed.

Haven't seen it yet.

I would like to have my Weatherby .257 back to thin out the coytoes.

I love my 30-06, 270, 308 in a bolt. 35Rem, 30-30 in a lever.
Happy hunting.

Depends on the terrain. Here in Nebraska when I'm in the woods, I hunt with a bow; I'd use a muzzleloader for the same since there is seldom more than 40-50 yards of clear space. I use a .270 out in the open for it's flat long range.

When I lived in PA and FL they were banned too - that's why I was surprised!

I miss hunting with a pistol - north of Tampa it was all you had room for - forget swinging around a 24" long gun in that scrub oak - pistol or 30/30 was the way to go.

ROTFL!! I had some luck as a teenager in PA with a Volks Beetle - but I think the buck got the better of the car in that instance...:D

in PA you can hunt w/ a crossbow if you have a disability that warrants it.

I'm not a hunter, myself. I do have my hunting permit, but never went out for a license for anything. I don't have a problem with hunting, as I love myself a good venison stew, but I can't handle the whole gutting thing... ech.

About 4 months ago I picked up a Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter, Bisley in .44mag; I would love to try hog/deer hunting.

That 10 point makes the six behind it look anemic...

Great looking deer my friend - Mule Deer or whitetail?

Thanks!

This is a 10 point Whitetail. 170 inches...:)..It will probably be the biggest buck I will ever have the opportunity to harvest. I did get him applied to a mount and have him hanging in my living room.

For a I've used a Ruger Mark II 280 bolt action for antelope and whitetail. It shoots like a 270, but has loading options like a 7mm. If I remember correctly, the casing is the same as a 7mm, and the neck is just slimmed down.

I've used a 30/30 quite a bit as well, but I like the range and power of the 270/280 types better. If you are hunting primarily in thick woods, the 30/30 will be just fine, since it is more of a short range rifle.
