So I'm on the verge of buying this player, but before I do . . .
What is the best method to hook-up my 2-channel system to this player? I want to get into SACDs and DVDAs, but I'm afraid if I use the 2-channel downmixed connections I will not be getting the full resolution of the SACd or DVDA. If I use the 5.1 outputs, will I be missing signals sent normally to the surround and center channels? I noticed one of my SACDs can be played in stereo. Is this a menu selection? HElp . . .

I have this player, but Im just connected via HDMI. I wish I knew the answers to your qs. I can tell you this though, its a very solid player and the Sq is great. Again, wish I could tell you more.

You'll only lose information if you select the 5.1 mix on the player and choose the 5.1 mix on the source. Stereo CDs play only in the front unless you tell the player you have a sub and select Small for the speakers. 2 channel SACD/DVD-A tracks are on all the disks that I've seen. You'll be fine.

Oppo Digital weighs in . . . It only took them 3 hours to return my email!
Michael,
For SACD you can set the priority to 2-Channel Stereo. So all other
sources will be in 5.1 audio, while SACD will always be 2.0 Stereo.

I got the 970 and it plays everything you can think of which is quite a deal for $149.00

I'm in the process of negotiating for a 971H. I heard somewhere (not sure if it's true) that unless you have a 1080p, the 971H would work best as it would better match the lower native resolutions? I don't know...I'm new at this. I guess if you planned on going 1080p in the future it wouldn't matter. The bad thing about the 971H is that the upconversion only works through the DVI connection. Unless you've got a DVI or HDMI you can use that feature!

You are correct, upconversion only works from the DVI out on the 971. They do provide a DVI/DVI and a DVI/HDMI cable with the player.

Upconversion only works on HDMI or DVI on all their (and most other brands) players unless you have a hack for it. Last I checked the 970 is the only Oppo that had a hack available but it's been a while so that may have changed.
The 971 and 981 will work equally well for a non-1080p set

I use the oppo with the hack so it will upconvert via component video cables and there is now an updated firmware hack that works very well with the player , and I am very happy with the player since I bought it in janurary of this year..:D
