I was under the impression they didn't like each other at all, and during the filming of heat, they wanted to film their parts separately. Have things changed?

I'm pretty sure that was always just a rumor. People claimed they didn't share much screen time, and speculated it was because they didn't like each other, and it escalated from there.

From the link, it sounds like they are actually friends. Probably more like mutual respect, but I don't think there's any animosity there.

That was true however for Bill Murray and Chevy Chase in Caddyshack. They really couldn't stand each other, and did want to work separately for the most part. I think it was more Chevy Chase being an @sshole than anything else (which I hate to hear, b/c he was great in his early stuff.)

Yeah I never understood the fascination with Heat, I don't think I've once made it through that movie from start to finish.
