Using sound meter to setup sub????

How do you adjust the settings on the sub and AVR for the sub db level? I was able to setup the speakers with a sound meter but not the sub. The sub adjust would be too loud to match the db of the speakers. I don't think I can use the sound meter but I have it adjusted by ear. What is the general method of setting up the volume of the subs.

I set all channels to the same level (the sub I approximate since it jumps by about 5 db during the test tones). Then I pick music I am familiar with and adjust the sub by ear from there to what sounds right for me. (usually ending up a few DB hot on the sub)

Generally - folks set the gain on the sub to about 1/4-1/3 of max, then use the AVR setup routine's pink noise to cycle through all of the channels, using the AVR's level controls to achieve the same decibel level on all speakers, including the sub. Some tweaking for personal preference generally occurs thereafter. People tend to run the subs a few dbs hot.

I’d get a friend who is really obsessed with matter to deal with it because one LFE.1 is a very dicey matter and very unpredictable, as well you really need the level tuned down on it just so it becomes noticeable, not where it becomes overwhelming, thus drowning out the rest of the bass signals from the rest of sound system that is just noise and not artful sound reproduction of the artists intention.
