I need an education in CDP

#1 what I am looking for in a good cdp.
#2 what makes a good cdp and a not so good cdp
#3 what are the better names
#4 If I go tube cdp, do I need tubes in the other elctronics to hear the difference?

I like solid build. I have never seen a cheap CD player built solid. It's a good indicator.

How much are you looking to spend and what do you have now?

You could always forgo adding a new CDP and go with a new DAC and use the current unit as a transport.

As for the Elites I have no experience with the cd players but have had a 47ai for about 4 years now. It was there top of the line DVD player when I purchased it and it is a great unit. Sound quality wise it is good but was beaten by my Jolida, and also by a Squeezebox with a cheap NOS DAC.

There is also the squeezebox route which I know at least a few members here embrace the main one of the top of my head being Joey_V.

my current nakamichi cannot use a DAC cause I have no digital outputs. It only 1 set of analog outputs :) This thing is a tank and I love it. the model number is CDP-2A. it a single disc with the green lights and readers on the front. I got it for 30 bucks and its in MINT condition.

I'm using the Pioneer Elite A35-R integrated amp. So I figured I'd follow suit with a matching cdp. Hooked into the mirage sm-1 vintage speakers I got.

This is for the budget 2 channel rig I put together that sound amazing and surprised the hell outta me.

120 for the pioneer, 30 for the nak, 25 for my yamaha phono and 30 for the mirages you cant go wrong :)

Careful with a tube CDP with a solid state preamp. I had two really good tube CDPs in my rig and my Spectral pre hated both of them. It just was bad synergy. The only way to find out is to hooked it up to your rig and listen for a good week.

Keep the Nakamichi if you like it. My ex had a Nakamichi OMS-2??? I think? It was a very smooth sounding player, but also very fussy about scratches/imperfections. Terrible error-correction circuit.

IMO, the best "econo-CDP's" are the less expensive Sony's, hands down. I could put a $129 Sony in my system tommorrow, and be fine with it.

Have you looked at the Oppo reviews? That sounds like a strong choice for your budget?

Sony's have real good rythm/pace. They make the music enjoyable. The down side is that the cheaper models can sound a little brittle in the high's at loud volumes. They're great players.

I love my Pioneer Elite PD-59 player. I also have other ones but my Pio Elite still sounds the best and I love the stable platter mechanism.

Keep the Nak I'd bet most $150 players will sound worse and many much worse. I've owned many Nak cdp's (still have one) and for their day they were outstanding and built like brick sh*thouses. Sure the technology is better today but not in a budget cdp. Use the Nak until it dies. I wish my OMS 4A still worked to use in my second system.

Sounds like it may have an issue. All the Naks I sold and owned from that era had great error correction. They used the latest Sony derived optics and e/c back then. Although many older players the Nak's included don't like cdr's and will either show an error in the display or skip like a mofo.
