Looks pretty interesting. Worth a rental for sure! Reminds me of a cross between The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Aeon Flux! :D

Plus has some big names. Could be good!

holy crap... the casting for this movie is freaking perfect... asriel, coulter, serafina, lyra, even fra pavel all have excellent actor choices...

for those that haven't read the other two books in the series (the subtle knife and the amber spyglass), you really should, if you liked the first... some people i've talked to find it a little difficult to make it through the second one, if they've identified strongly with the first, but it's worth it - the third one moves me every time i read it.

edit: just watched the trailer... of the scenes i recognised, it seems they've done a pretty good job of keeping to the book, which should make it much better... or, rather, make it more difficult to suck

This is funny.....

I just recieved an email with the title "dont watch this movie". Seems to have been forwarded about 50 million times. The subject was about this movie refering to killing God. Are these people crazy?? If this is the case then I guess that great movie Narnia and if you read deep enough, Star Wars and LOTR, too.

...unbelievable.

Looks pretty cool. As far as the contoversy, it is a fictional work. I remember in college we studied The Dead Poets Society and Pink Floyd - The Wall in Philosophy. Robin Williams character was related to the devil because he introduced choice, where the god figure was played by the dean, no choice. The devil looked more attractive and was the "hero".

I am sure there will be a firestorm when this movie is released by the same that oppose Harry Potter. Can't wait.

Well the reason I found this funny is because, if you look at alot of other "stories", they contain a huge undertone of antichrist. Star Wars, Darth Sidious could be construde as the devil himself, powerfull , evil, and in control of the entire universe. But nothing was said about that.

This Golden Compass movie and many others like it, are pure fantasy adventure movies. Pans Laberynth, was another that could have been taken completely out of context, but I think the rating of R stopped that from happening.

"I detest them. I think they're poisonous." On the Chronicles of Narnia.

Kind of ironic.....Has anyone read The Screwtape Letters, also by CS Lewis? Very interesting reading, highly recommended.

Saw the trailer last night when watching Bee Movie. I think it looks like it will be very entertaining.

Is this out today?!

I read a review from a guy on another board, and he said it was FANTASTIC. I don't know about the whole "anti-religious" behind it, but I don't watch movies to support a religion. I watch them for entertainment.

I, for one, will be seeing this in the theaters, much to the protest of my friends. :D

I know the movie has been watered down to make it palpable for the masses, as from what I understand, the novel's storyline involves the killing of "God". That being said, I won't watch it as it's just not the type of movie that interests me.

As a parochial school teacher, I should mention that parochial schools across the USA supported student reading of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

Just finished watching this movie. First, let me say up front that this isn't my type of movie. My wife loves the fantasy genre and I hate them, so I was expecting to be bored out of my mind.

OK, now that I got that out of the way, lemme say that I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Great story and very entertaining. The big bear is very cool and worth the price of admission alone. Looking forward to the sequel. Excellent workout for the sub, too. Highly recommended.

Watched it last night... it wasn't nearly what I was expecting, but it was a great flick! Very much a prelude for things to come.

The bear was great for the sub. Terrific acting all the way around, and a great musical score! Still felt a little childish at times, but maybe that was just me.

Enjoy this one folks.

It didn't do well in America do to all the religious freaks. It did awesome over seas and more than made up for it's budget. Don't know about the sequels yet though as New Line was absorbed by WB.

As far as the movie goes, movie was crap compared to the book. However the girl that plays Lyra is awesomeeee. Best kid actor her age I think I've ever seen.

I thoroughly enjoyed the books years ago, and thought the movie was pretty entertaining, albeit childish. You kinda gotta go into it expecting that. Nice to see Wild Bill Hickock in it tho (See: Deadwood).

I watched it a couple fo time in BD last week. It was an entertaining flick. I watched it twice due to calibration issues with DTS MA...had to switch back to standard DTS the first time. I haven't read the book(s), but plan on it soon. I did read about the controversy, which is a crock of sh*t. Watering down this movie probably killed it. I thought it needed a full blown PJ type adaption. Just too much detail and backstory left on the floor. The comments about Star Wars vs. Dark Materials and religious comparisons are right on. The only difference is that George Lucas didn't come out and say he's an atheist or killed God, but the metaphors are there. I agree on the little actress picked from a 10,000 girl casting call with little or no professional experience...quite a find.

Does anyone know how to get the DTS-HD Master audio to ouput when using a PS3? I tried to select it in the dvd menu, but I couldn't scroll up to select the DTS-HD Master selection, and only get DTS. I have all the settings correct in the PS3 menu to allow for LPCM of the loseless codecs but I can't get this or some other movies to work. Any suggestions?

Good movie, I've watched it twice now on Blu, very well done and a great cast too boot. Also, the DTSMA-HD 7.1 track is f'ing awesome.

I liked the movie. I read the books back in middle school, and they were really good. While they cheesed it up a bit for the big screen, it was still entertaining. I hope it makes it to the sequels. I was super excited to hear they went ahead and made the next Chronicals of Narnia movie.

The Golden Compass backrupted NewLine so that they were forced to sell themselves to Warner. It only did $70M in the US which was all NL owned the rights too, but they footed the >$200 to get this less than overwhelming epic in the theatres. Worldwide the numbers were profitable, but don't expect to see any sequels. BTW, I'm repeating this from a Hollywood insider that posts over on AVS, not from personal knowledge.

The movie was interesting enough that I went to the library and read the books. The books were much better, but I don't know what NL was thinking...the whole trilogy is a tough sell.

Did you upgrade the firmware in your PS3 for the DTSMA-HD feature? The update came out about a month ago.

Yeah, I figured out the problem. I went into BD DVD settings and changed the audio out to LPCM but I guess it didn't select it cause I went back in there today and it was set to bitstream.
