So the other day, the wifey and I are getting our frozen custard fix at one of those outside establishments, when we sit down on the curb to partake. As we were right by the drive-thru, I couldn't help but notice a lady getting a triple-scoop cone for her and her daughter in the passenger seat -- the kind you only see in cartoons or billboards.
While she is handling this behemoth, she's talking away on her cell. She may have even used her chin to get the car in gear. I don't know. What I do know is that she pulled right into traffic (very busy traffic), all whilst yammering away on her cell and slurping away on her triple scoop monstrosity.
I didn't see a third arm, but I did see that she had a 10-year old daughter in the passenger seat. If I were a cop, I would have pulled her over IMMEDIATELY. It was a disaster waiting to happen.
So with this aside, I'm wondering what really chaps the collective hide of the Polk community when it comes to other drivers. What is it that gets your blood boiling when getting from point A to point B in your jalopey?
Another thing for me would be in busy and congested traffic when drivers will go Mach 8 to go through a yellow light, but conversely go at a snail's pace through a fresh green light knowing there are nearly 197 cars behind them that will probably have to sit through the same light 86 times before gaining passage to the next bottleneck.

I love it when people go as far as they can in a lane that they know ends in 100 feet...then when you don't feel like letting their sorry a$$es in, they flip you off.
I also hate it when people flick their cigs out the window while driving..

Tuesday I'm heading down the highway to work. In the lane next to me coming up is a white pickup/construction type truck with welding gear in the back along with the large bottles of welding gases (Oxygen, Acetyline, etc...). I notice in his large rear view mirror that he has his head leaning all the way to the side holding his cell phone on his shoulder. Sure enough as I get near to being beside him, he starts drifting into my lane (while head is still cocked to the side holding cell phone) and gets VERY close to side swiping me. I pound on my horn and dude flies back into his lane.
I gave him that evil Darth Vader "I want to force choke your dumbass" look as I go bye him along with a few WTF's.
Get a damn Bluetooth device for you ear if ya want to talk on the cell phone!

People who pull right out in front of me, even though there is no one behind me, and then drive 25 or 30 in a 55 zone.
I get annoyed with anyone who disrupts the flow of traffic, like those that come to almost a complete stop, BEFORE pulling into the turn lane. Do they know what a turn lane is for?

2 things really piss me off...
1.) The left hand lane is for passing.... for some reason, some folks in Maryland don't seem to get this. I see people all the time merging onto 270, 495 & 95 cutting people off just to get to the left lane to drive slow. AAAAAHHHH!
2.) Everyone on the road at the start of the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn to the Suffolk County line on the Southern State. Most dangerous 35 miles I have ever seen especially in the summer months when the Cidiots (City Idiots from Manhatten) migrate to the Hampton’s on the weekend.

Alot of things tick me off while driving, but the biggest is people going out of traffic only to veer back in a few car lengths later. This happens all the time on may way back from college in Springfield. There is a 2 lane bridge and the left lane goes on while the right goes to a rotary so it is always backed up. People will be in the right lane and pull into the left to get up a few car lengths and then swing back into the right. I once saw a Ferrari drive on the grass because no one would let her in after she tried to muscle her way in.
For those who live in or around the hartford area, going on 91 the exit to get to asylum or 84 this happens alot to. There is a stretch of around 1/2-3/4 of a mile that is exit only yet everytime I go to work there is someone who has to wait till the last second and go over the yellow and just miss hitting the barrels. I can honestly say I have numerous times blocked people and hoped they hit the median...because I hate them.

I could write a book.
Cell phones are an obvious one.
People who don't put on their headlights when it's raining. Yes, you should do this. Especially on the highway. It's arguably harder to see someone through the haze that comes up from a wet highway than it is to see them in the middle of the night. You NEED to have your headlights on in the rain.
High beams piss me off. They're almost never necessary, and people leave them on all the time, and it's rude and distracting. How do you not notice the big blue light on your dashboard?
People in small cars who think they're driving a big rig or something, when they swing far left to take an easy right hand turn. Not necessary, and you're causing traffic.
People who follow ridiculously close to the guy in front of them in traffic. You're obviously not going to make the guy go faster - there's nowhere for him to go. And all you're doing is risking another accident and WORSE traffic by being impatient.
That's all for now. Although I live ona pretty busy "city" street, so my biggest pet peeve is idiots with their subwoofers blaring at jet afterburner levels at 2AM. I hope you all get hearing loss at 25, if you live that long.

Inattentive and inconsiderate drivers. I could go down a list of boneheaded things I've seen on the roads but they all amount to inconsiderate/inattentive driving.
As far as the worst road in the area? It's a toss up. You have Rt-130 in NJ and I76 in PA. Rt-130 is a 4-6 lane road the cuts through Camden and it's surrounding areas. It's not always divided and even though the speed limit is 35 MPH in some of the more congested spots, people still scream up and down that road at 50-65 MPH. There are traffic lights up and down the entire length and if you think jughandles are bad, try a circle on for size and then complain to me about a jughandle.
I76 otherwise known as the Surekill Expressway. It's still the fastest way through Philly...at 2am. Otherwise it's bumper to bumper traffic, usually stop and go but mostly traveling at about 65-70 MPH. Cars are rarely spaced more than half a car length apart. It's two lanes in either direction but most of the road is built on the side of shale cliffs over the Schuylkill River. There are concrete walls on both sides. Add to that the fact that the entrance and exit ramps are insanely short and traffic moving on and off of the expressway is taking an unnecessary risk by just entering or exiting the highway. Then you get to the end where the King of Prussia Mall is and you'd rather kick yourself in the head a few times than deal with the I76/Rt202/Rt422/PA Turnpike interchange. It's an ugly spaghetti mess of roads that is downright impossible to successfully navigate for those who are not from the area.
I've had the "luxury" of driving those roads quite often and I'm always surprised that I got through unscathed. I drove I-76 every day to get to school when I was in college. I drove Rt-130 quite often because it was part of my coverage area when I was running on an ambulance squad. I cleaned quite few people up off that road.

I have to say our Spaghetti junction during rush hour is a bit of an anomaly. Those commuting back across the river to Indiana will stay in the left lane for nearly an hour, while those of us heading back into the city to our homes whiz past them in no time flat.
Every once in a while, a hoosier will break this unwritten truce and swing into the right lane to try to pick up a few car lengths -- and the ensuing attempt for him/her to get back in the Indiana lane will bring everything to a stop. But this is actually rarer than you would think. Pretty courteous of the lot of 'em, if you ask me.

I won't do it in an off-ramp; this would block an on going lane. I will do it if there's road work and a lane is closed, or on normal lane reductions in the highway. This is not against any law and no cop can stop me for doing it. The lane goes until it ends.
Edit: Dicks.
bobman1235
06-14-2007, 12:03 PM
Meh, it's not like it's against the law. You just think your'e better than everyone, and are inconsiderate to other drivers, and don't care that you're the reason there's traffic.
I actually usually let those people in, unless I'm in a particularly bad mood. Otherwise they just clog up another lane of traffic, and really, what's the point, they'll get in eventually. I got other battles to fight.
EDIT i thought we were talking about off-ramps. When a lane is closed for construction or something I think everyone should go until the very end, so they all merge at ONE point rather than having a big cluster-eff for a half a mile.

People on cell phones should be given DWI tickets...
SUV's in general. I still would love a law where anyone driving a vehicle larger than a jeep cherokee needs a special license where they have to prove that they can control and park the vehicle.

Along with most of those that have already been mentioned, these annoy me:
People who drive without their lights on after it's dark. Also people who drive with only their FOG lights on.
Tailgaters! Tailgating, and cell phone usage by people who simply can't drive while talking on the phone (some people can, most people can't) surely has to account for a large percentage of traffic accidents.
Dog in lap while driving.
Reading newspaper while driving.
The "fashionable", goofy custom taillights that people install these days. Red is for brakes, yellow (or red) is for turn signals. I don't want to see blue brake lights. "Blacked-out" taillamps is another one. I'm pretty sure neither of these are legal, but a few years ago, in a brilliant move to "streamline the process" our Governer did away with the mandatory vehicle safety inspections. So now: Brake lights don't work? Big deal! No turn signals? Ha! Steel showing all the way around your tires? Struts held together with baling wire (I've seen this- really not funny)?? Maybe you'll get a ticket after the accident, if you're still alive.
Jstas
06-14-2007, 12:25 PM
eh? Aren't you supposed to brake down hill to slow down? Unless I'm missing something here...
Depends. Small hills like what we have in souther NJ here, braking is OK. However, if you ride your brake pedal all the way down the hill, your brakes heat up and they can fade or just fail completely at the bottom. You should downshift to a lower gear and use engine compression to slow the vehicle down on a hill until you get to the bottom where you won't pick up speed after you take your foot off of the brake pedal.
However, I think Sid was just expressing typical teenage driver annoyance at people who are using a bit caution on the road when it is warranted. I agree, hills are fun for sure but use of discretion is not always a bad thing.

Well, for one thing, an intersection with no traffic signals or signs is uncontrolled and in NJ and PA, the law requires all directions at an uncontrolled intersection to stop and make sure traffic is clear. If there is a controlled intersection and your direction does not have the control then, I agree with you, that is aggravating. I'm all for safe driving but there is a point where excessive safety and caution exercised becomes a danger and liability.

I could go forever with this thread, but I'll keep my whining to a minimum:)
1. People going under the speed limit in the fast lane(or more annoying, two people going under the speed limit in both lanes).
2. Someone hurries up to pull out, they cut you off, then go 10 miles under the speed limit.
3. When merging on to a highway and the roads aren't jammed. You should use the ramp to go the same speed as drivers on the highway to make an easy merge. Instead, they go half the speed limit to the yield sign then have to stop.
4. speaking of yield signs, YIELD SIGNS DON'T MEAN STOP!
I never use my cell phone while driving expect maybe for a minute or two. Its hard enough driving with an auto, its almost impossible talking on a phone on a curvy road with a stick...
I can't count how many times I got forced off the road by a person talking on the phone and they don't even realize they almost killed you...

Speed limit is fine in the rain --- only time you should consider going below the speed limit is if you cant see infront of you because of the rain.
If you cant drive the speed limit in the rain - normal everyday rain - you shouldnt drive. You are a hazard to the road. Thats my opinion.
As for going down hill -- what goes downhill must go uphill... if you go 10 mph faster down hill -- coast it up the hill... use less gas and you slow back down... hmm

Well I dunno - in the rain... if I can keep my hydroplaning tank on the road - someone in a honda civic that 6" from the ground, front wheel drive going the same speed surely can to.
I've been sideways in my truck before during a left turn going jogging speeds - if that. Hydroplaning SUCKS.

bobman1235

Technically (yes I know this is not really the case), the speed limit is supposed to be the maximum safe speed in dry conditions. So... shouldn't the maximum safe speed in WET conditions be significantly less? Also, I don't think the guideline they go by is "can I keep my car on the road".
As for going downhill, it depends on the hill. Some people don't like speeding at all, so if they're going th espeed limit, and start gaining speed downhill, they're going to brake.... I don't think it's that much of a stretch to understand. In most cases, on a small hill, just letting off the gas is sufficient, an das Jstas said, on a big hill laying on your brakes for extended times can cause major damage or brake failure. But on a moderate hill, I just don't see the big deal.

Ok, I'll agree with you there. Usually speeding in a 15/25/35 is much MUCH more dangerous than speeding in a 45/55/65/75 type zones. If your going to break the lower ones and not the higher ones, well, eff off.

hmm... i have to say cellphones, obviously... most of the other stuff listed, too
my take on the 2-to-1 lane merge... there's a section of road that's under construction near me... it's a two-lane road, no turns or ramps or anything, and people will merge a half mile before the merge point, when there are signs stating "please use both lanes to the merge point"... these are the same people that will nearly rear-end the guy in front of them to prevent you from merging at the merge point...
another one i've never personally experienced... my roommate is from california, and he says people there will, in heavy traffic, use the berm on a highway to line up for an off-ramp... this seemed to be a good idea until i thought about an ambulance... that is, after all, the point of the berm lane, right? to provide for emergency vehicles? it took me almost half an hour to convince him that five minutes' worth of impatience on the part of these drivers was not worth the death of the person waiting for the ambulance that they're blocking...

Most of my pet peeves have been covered earlier, but I do think that 4-way stops truly demonstrate how idiotic most drivers are. So many drivers just pull up to the stop sign and then lose their mind - should I go? Should I let them go? And then...30 seconds later, everybody goes at once.
My other issue is people that speed through residential areas. Granted, kids shouldn't be in the street, but people shouldn't be doing 50 mph in a residential area loaded with kids. Last summer, my best friend's little boy was about 6 inches from death because some moron was flying down our street. Scary stuff.

regarding jerks... driving habits can tell you a lot about how well people make life decisions. some people are just selfish, irresponsible and habitually angry that other people are even on the road. they often wreck their cars, can't get ahead financially and can't understand why their life is so miserable. if you're a jerk in the car, then you're likely a jerk at the house, and a pretty sad soul to boot. driving is a give and take situation with lots of social implications... just look at this thread. and people that try to take, take, take, are usually frustrated with relationships because they don't know how to give. most of these folks were probably spoiled growing up, which always leads to being unsatisfied and thus trying to step on everyone to get what they want... to be first in line. just my opinion from years of observations.

regarding jerks... driving habits can tell you a lot about how well people make life decisions. some people are just selfish, irresponsible and habitually angry that other people are even on the road. they often wreck their cars, can't get ahead financially and can't understand why their life is so miserable. if you're a jerk in the car, then you're likely a jerk at the house, and a pretty sad soul to boot. driving is a give and take situation with lots of social implications... just look at this thread. and people that try to take, take, take, are usually frustrated with relationships because they don't know how to give. most of these folks were probably spoiled growing up, which always leads to being unsatisfied and thus trying to step on everyone to get what they want... to be first in line. just my opinion from years of observations.
That's a pretty broad and strong generalization there, especially when things like this:

are factored in.
Also, just because someone is driving aggressively does not mean they are road raging. They may have something going on that you don't know about like say, 10 minutes before they encountered you, they got a call from the police saying their spouse was critically injured in an accident and they needed to get to the hospital.
Also, just because someone road rages, it doesn't make them miserable and unliked in life or incapable of being successful. I'd like to see some of your evidence that backs up your fairly outlandish statements there especially regarding the frequency of accidents in regard to financial prosperity and success in having a happy and constructive family life at home.
You honestly can't determine much about person by driving habits alone. Just like you can't determine much about a person by way of the Internet.

Okay I've read all of these posts. Everything that pisses me off while driving has been covered here.
Can someone please tell me how all of the people above have these same feelings but there are dickheads out there that still do this shit?
Also in PA you have two miles to complete a passing move from the left lane. If you don't you can be ticketed whether you are from Maryland or not! BTW Delaware drivers are just as guilty as Maryland drivers and of late all the traveling I've been doing on I 95 to and from Philly so are NY drivers.
I was hesistant to get my auto tags changed from PA to Delaware because everytime I would see a Delaware plate, my thought would immediately go to DICKHEAD! Now I have a Delaware plate jeezzzzz.

did you even notice that i started with "regarding JERKS". i'm not talking about emergencies. i'm not talking about the occasional offender. i AM talking about JERKS who have a pattern of selfish behavior that began before they even started driving. everyone has witnessed this first hand at some point. i'm not saying anyone who has a bad day falls into this category, but rather that selfish spoiled brats OFTEN make bad drivers. and you can make clinical excuses all day long, but when it comes down to it there is no excuse for this kind of behavior. so don't hear what i'm not saying. and like i said, it's just an opinion so you can take it or leave it.

How do sportbikes annoy you? I'm much more annoyed with the Harley riders around here. Pipes that are WAY too loud, and they ride in packs, usualy at 10 or 15 under the speed limit, taking up both lanes of a 4 lane road, so that no one can get around them. Or on the two lane highways, same speed, with their ten or more bikes stretched out for two blocks or more, so you can't pass. But they sure look cool....

Don't see that problem here with Harleys. The Harley riders are all middle aged white collar workers. The sport bike idiots OTOH, ride like complete insane idiots. They're an accident that's going to happen and everyone else gets to pay the $2M hospital bill to teach him how to walk again.

Same in our area, harleys rarely take up more then one lane even if there are 10+ of them, but the guys on crotch rockets like to fly through traffic. I have almost caused a couple of accidents changing lanes because of these idiots, you look right and see no cars but you don't expect a motorcycle to come out of nowhere going 150+. In our area they like to weave through traffic, fly down the highway, go between cars in stopped traffic, and I have seen many use breakdown lanes as their own lane.
Thats another annoyance, on the highway people who use the breakdown lane in heavy traffic. Every few days coming home from work I would see it, we would all be going 5-10mph in stop and go traffic and some idiot trying to drive in the breakdown lane. I once saw a guy start a fight becuase a car had broken down and used the breakdown lane...which stopped him from getting by.

Most of the Harley riders here are officers, so Driving Miss Daisy comes to mind...The sportbikes on the other hand, drive them like they stole 'em....Then again, most people drive their cars like that around here anyway...This area sucks.

So you guys are saying you have never been held up in traffic by a group of Harleys? That's amazing, as I have drove all over the country, and have ran into it just about everywhere. And I was not talking about gangs, but new Harley riders, described above as "middle aged white collar workers". All show, no go.
