Just curious if any of you have built out all or part of your garage for a dedicated HT. How did you do it and how did your budget work out?

Ditto what Troy said Darla, check out Ron-P's showcase. Very impressive! California (like Florida) who needs a garage anyhow?

I converted 1/2 of my 2-car garage into a HT. The HT shares one common wall with the garage, other then that it is free standing. Here's a few specs;

16'(L) x 9'(W)
Seats 7 (Futon in back on 12" deck and 3 chairs up front)
All 2x4 framing with 2x6 ceiling joists
Double drywall inside (5/8" over 1/2")
Exterior is 5/8" OSB over 1/2" drywall
Two dedicated 20amp lines run off the main house panel (one line for gear / the other for everything else)
Interior is 100% blacked out (Walls are black fabric, black carpet and black paint)
85" DIY screen (Front row is 7' from and the back is 12' from the screen)

Total coat to build the room, about $2,400. I did 100% of the work. So I could open the garage door the front half of the theater has a ceiling height of 6', the back half is 7.5'.

Other then some vibration (at high listening volume) the house is completely isolated from the theater which makes it great for the rest of the family. I had the theater in the house previous and the entire house was affected, which sucked.

Feel free to fire off any questions. Here's the link to my showcase...which sadly, needs updating: http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showcase/view.php?userid=17179

Ron that is a nice theater you have. I like the idea of it being isolated from the rest of the house.

Thanks Ron.
My only problem is that I have an ac unit on one side and washer dryer on the other. Plus with hurricanes here, I would want more than garage door and drywall around the HT. That is a good budget though but I am definitely not a DIY er.

Anyone here in Florida have an idea of the budget needed to actually build a room - as in addition to the house...? Just working on a savings plan...:D

Hi Darla,
Funny you should ask because I just had my General Contractor here on Saturday to get quotes to fully enclose my back porch as I was thinking about. He just did his own house and enclosed a 15' x 40' porch. He recommends pressure treated wood over CBS because it is a stronger bond over morter. I would run 3 dedicated power lines and A/C.

As for the garage, you can always install a hurricane door. For a 2 car garage it is around 2k. I have a 1 car garage and installed a Secure Door brace for $250, rates the steel door ar 180 mph.
