This may have already been covered, but oh well.

Mine are:
Aquarium fish. All freshwater. At one point I had 11 tanks set up. I'm currently down to 2.
Hunting & Fishing. I love hunting more while I'm doing it, but I can dedicate more free time to fishing.
Daughter that's soon to be 2yrs. old. She consumes most of my free time (that's not being spent on audio). She's my first and only. Gosh I love her.
Home repair. Nothing fancy or investmentual, just keeping up with the Jones'. Will be moving soon so it's time to invest some money and elbow grease.

Anybody out there into woodworking?

Edit: I should add that I'm not really into any sport of any kind. Maybe watching some 9-ball on ESPN or pool at the bar, but that's it.

I spend some time restoring antique furniture. Prefer Mission Oak stuff. The worse condition the better. I guess you could call it woodworking in a sense. I have a pretty good shop and make a lot of parts for pieces that are really bad. I do tackle an original project once in a while. I am currently assembling a custom made Mission Style oak stereo cabinet that should match some of the other antiques I own. When complete it will contain no metal, just wood and glass.

Other hobbies include hiking, fishing (though I don't catch many). With as much as I work, I try to spend free time with wife and kids. Also enjoy trap and skeet shooting, pheasant hunting. Try to pay a visit to one of the many hot springs every month or so. This is a favorite of mine and the kids, of course, like the swimming part involved. And of course the pursuit of music. My wife and kids still do not understand how I can spend hours sorting through records or cd's in a music store. My collection of vintage vinyl baffles them and though they enjoy listening to it, do not seem to understand it. Oh well. It has been ongoing with me for nigh on to 35 years and I can't see any end to the obsession.
Love to read. Favorite writers include Raymond Carver, Bill Kittridge, Richard Hugo, John Steinbeck, Galway Kinnell, Donald Justice, Larry McMurtry, Jim Harrison and many, many others.
There is more to this, but I will leave it at that.

What, nobody mentioned girlwatching. Hell, even us married dudes can sneak a peek at a 'foxy babe' every once in a while and not get caught by the wife.

Woodworking? Kinda....I restore period antiques for a living, but I suppose it's a bit of a hobby too as I love it. Since I work with traditional hand tools 99% of the time I also collect them. One job I'm doing right now is two stuffed owls in a shadow box from England circa 1840. Restoration is to the case as well as one of the owls. It's kinda weird having two pair of eyes staring at you as you work!
I collect American folk art including toleware and oil paintings. New England grain painted furniture, hooked rugs, vintage working decoys, polychromed miniature birds and bird watercolors.
For fun I like swimming, camping, kayak/canoeing, fishing, travel, gardening (nothing like home grown tomatoes), sailing, Formula 1 racing and of course 2 channel audio.

Paul,
Are you fuming that oak cabinet?

I enjoy fishing the local river for rainbow or brown trout, alsoenjoy camping out with the wife and kids. like to do some woodworking as time permits, havn't been at to long but I continue to learn and amaze myself as to what I am capable of doing. Anybody got a decent plunge router for sale? The only part that I have any reserve about is refinishing an older piece or putting finish on a new piece and be happy with the end result. I have an over 100 year old amoire that my wife wants refinished and I am trying to learn all that I can before I tackle this one as I do not want to ruin the piece.
I also collect hotwheels old and new, plus it allows me to spend time with the three boys as they love them as well.
I enjoy my audio hobby as well, but with four kids and the demands around this house it is not as often as I would like for it to be. I love cars and I am currently starting a restoration of my 1988 shelby daytona, it is such a fun car to drive but it is in need of a lot of attention right now before it can be road worthy again.I am in need of a perfect interior for it and hope I can find one with low miles to rouge one from. Well I could go on but I must head out as I have to pour a walkway today.

F1nut:

No, I am not aging the oak. Most of the pieces I am using are quarter-sawn and I use a standard stain with a hand rubbed finish to match other pieces. Personal preference I guess.

Hotwheelman:
Just a tip. Do not alter the finish or structure of that armoire until you have done some research on it's origin and value. In some cases the value of a piece is determined by the fact that it is untouched. I have heard of 20-30k pieces of antique furniture becoming worthless because the owner decided to refinish. Consider the age and manufacturer. I try to stay with items that start out worthless, that way I'm not stressed by trying to stay exact.

Paul,

Fuming is not aging, it's the process that gave the original Mission furniture it's dark brown color. I take it from what you've said that you're going for a lighter color. Have you tried dyes instead of stains? The dyes are translucent and really make the rays come alive. Of course, I understand you're matching pieces you've done before. Just thought I'd mention it for future reference.

hotwheelman,

What Paul says has some truth to it. In reality there is about 1% of the "antique" furniture out there that will lose significant value if refinished. If I can be of help to you determining what it is that you have, send me some photos via email at jvrestore@aol.com.

F1nut:

Guess I used the wrong term when I mentioned aging. My understanding is that fuming is a process using a type of ammonia fume to darken oak and give it an aged appearance. I am not familiar with the process and have not used it. Is this the same process that Stickley uses? I will look into dyes. Thanks for the tip. There is a local professional I sometimes go to for advice, but for most things I still stay with what works for me personally. I am still learning so I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks

Paul,

Your understanding is correct except it really doesn't give it an aged look, just color. The ammonia reacts with the tannin in the wood causing it to darken. Yes, that's what the original Stickley used. Not sure about the new Stickley, but I doubt it. It's not a efficient method for high production factories. There is a good book about finishes you might want to check out, Understanding Wood Finishing by Bob Flexner. It's nice that you have someone to get advice from....usually I'm trying to get advice from my supplier about why that *&$%#@!%* stuff you said was the best thing since sliced bread is peeling off the table I just finished. There is alot to be said about staying with what works.

Hotwheelin' - If you're not set on a design and would like someting that looks nice I'd think about this one. I haven't heard it, but I've read some good things about it.

I think that would make a great coffee table with the right top.
If you're looking for something else, Ron-P built a sub that he raves about. I've read similar results from many people. He has pretty much layed it out for us. Get your search on. I'm drunk and lazy.

f1, I will try and get a few picks pulled together and send them to you, Pual, I should point out that I also have taken a liking to the mission style of furniture. I have some virgin oak from my grandparents farm that varies in width and length, we pulled it from the roof area of an old out building on the property. their house is over 100 yr old victorian. You think I could use that to do some mission style of my own? by the way thanks to you both for the info, if I have any more questions I will be sure to point them in your direction.

I'm into:

Computers (building and repairing)
R/C Cars (building and racing... but not so much the repairing :D )
Mountain Biking
and
Wasting time online

BTW- i'm surprised at the number of R/C'ers on here. Don't know why, but I am. I've got a Traxxas T-Maxx that is non-functional at the moment. I'm waiting on the money to buy a Megatech .16 engine for it. *sigh*. Oh, and I'm a fine connoisseur of obscure '70s music :-D.... ELP KICKS ASS!!!
