hmm, curious... i looked a bit and got lost a bit as well... are there any models you are considering? i have briefly considered hi-fi headphone amps a few times, as i end up using cans frequently in my basement studio... the one i have now uses a 1/4" TRS cable, but i would think an "audiophile" version would probably use standard rca? i guess i really have no clue  ... perhaps you could use a tape loop send, unless you still use tapes (cassette or otherwise) like me, lol... i imagine that most models would have some sort of gain or volume control.

I thought I read somewhere a while ago that some headphone amps have to be connected to the speaker connections of your receiver or to pre outs... but I'd like to confirm that.
I'd like to find a used headphone amp for under $300 to drive me Senn 590's

hook it up to any tape out, you want a non variable output, and use the headphone amp's volume control.

I use the tape out with standard I/C's. Some amps have a pass through
so they can be used between the source and pre..
Some headphone amps make a good pre.

$300 will buy a good used headphone amp. Not the best, but good.
Opinions will vary on what's good. The headphone brand will match up with
certain amps well. I'm using a ASL MGhead(tubed) with Senn 650's.
Look for a Head Fi meet. You will get to see and hear many amps and
headphones. Link to Dallas meet.

Several good used choice for SS is a M^3 or PPA(homebrew or pro built).
All for around $300 used.
