I have two Carver TFM 6cbs that could be run in bridged mode to deliver 200wpc to 8 ohms. They are a little older but still work well and would fall in your budget. Not 100% sure I'm selling, but have thought about it.
Check out Audiogon. Most sellers with feedback there are very reputable, in my opinion. Don't go ebay unless you find a killer deal. Lot of bad sellers there, obviously.

If I were you, I would keep checking the FS section of this forum (although you can't buy until you have 25 good posts), check Audiogon.com (you can search locally using the first 2 digits of your zip), and check the local Craiglist.
$200 - $300 can get you a pretty good stereo amp. I would look at B&K, Rotel, NAD, Carver, Adcom, etc. B&K ST-202, 2140, ST-140, can all be had in that range. Not the newest amps, but very solid performers. Tons of Adcom stuff in that range as well.
Good luck! Happy hunting. . .

yea i've been keeping my eye on audiogon pretty much non-stop for the last 2 weeks. i've heard some negative things about NAD though, do you know anything more about them? supposedly their equipment is powerful, but poorly made and is prone to problems.

I've gone through some NAD gear in the last couple years. Haven't experienced any issues worth noting.
I think they are solid pieces and under-rated power wise.
