I recently got a new Samsung 1080p HDTV (love it!) and am looking to get a Blue Ray DVD player. I was wondering what anyones recommendations would be. I was thinking of getting a PS3 since I miss gaming a bit, but am wondering if the Blue Ray player on the PS3 is as good as a stand alone player? If not, I'd still be looking for a stand alone player under $600. Any suggestions/help? Thanks!

The ps3 is a high end stand alone player (although not a dedicated one) that doesn't need any add-ons to function as a blu-ray player. It's just that it has a really powerful graphics and main processor that allow it to play games and be easily upgraded to do things like upscaling DVDs to full 1080p. The only thing it lacks is analog outs. So to listen to the lossless sound formats, you need to hook it up to a receiver with at least hdmi 1.1.

ps3 is the best for future-updateability as well. none of the standalones have the proper hardware the 'final' bluray standard. ...or so i've read.
edit: 'standard' should read 'profile'.

I ordered the PS3 after doing a bit of research. I am waiting for it to ship from Dell.

I'll 3rd/4th? the PS3.
It also does an admirable job of upconverting standard DVDs.

The Panisonic DMP-BD10A will decode DD+, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD straight out of the box, no waiting for an update, plus has 7.1 analogs so you won't have to upgrade to an HDMI AVR to decode the surround formats, plus comes with 5 free movies packed in the box. Not saying that the PS3 isn't the most future proof of the players but as far right now I think the Panny is hard to beat.

The Sony PS3 is the best value in blue ray today. It's a great player and with all it can do it's a home run.
Only downside to it is you have to use it's remote to control it or a game controller. It doesn't except IR control so Universal type remotes are out of the question. What I do is Program a Universal to setup the system then use it for volume control.

The USB controller ports give the ps3 extra upgradability. This remote has a receiver that appears to work with a harmony IR remote:

You just have to use the controller to turn the ps3 on and off...

Sony's BDP-S1 is the best ive seen yet tied with Pioneer's Elite model. Why are they so close? BC sony makes it for Pioneer and its the same guts. The thing about Sony's model as opposed to the PS3 is that it upscales regular DVDs to a beautiful picture, better than the Panasonic or anyother one. Awesome player, i have taken them all home and demoed each one very closely. Sony is the best picture.

Another vote for PS3. Its probably the best option for avoiding an obsolete paper weight in the next year.

My PS3 is insanely loud after about an hour. Perhaps I got a dud last week? I'm planning on replacing it. My friend's PS3 is quiet.
My PS3 is on top of an av rack with a ceiling fan nearby.

It does have a fan and a hard drive in it, both of which obviously spin. Probably one or the other going bad.
You should definitely have it replaced if it's under warranty.
