??? What is this saying? I just got a 60gb and am hoping this isn't some negative connotation.....
MikeC78

No, the emotion engine in a nutshell is for PS2 playback. The 60 gb fully supports this as the newer 80g does not. This was a way to "cheapen" it up, be happy that you have the 60g.

Ahh, ok. I moved from the 360 to the ps3, so I don't have any left over ps2 games anyway.
Good to know though, thx Mike!
Thanks for the heads-up, I used the $150 Chase/Sony CC offer, got hit by TX sales taxes but still $390 for PS3 60GB is a good deal. Now I can use my Amazon cashback for controllers and games... :)
Now I'm set for BR and HD-DVD so format was is of no concern.

The 80GB version uses the same software emulation that Europe uses to play 2000+ legacy games. Although I think the 60GB version is a great deal since you basically get the guts of a ps2 included for free and at a discount to the 80GB, the emotion engine is increasingly redundant and needed to be cut eventually.

Yep, uses the same software that's all.
Which in turn has an impact on the number of PS2 titles that will be backwards compatible.
So cut the emotion engine and add another 20 gb?

If it leaves them room for another price cut before Christmas, I'd be for it. But if we're back up to $599 after the 60GB ones go, then I'd agree it was a pretty empty move. I'm thinking it probably means more room for another price cut. And the incompatibility is more likely the obscure titles. Firmware updates have added the great majority of played titles and can always do more.

So let me get this straight if I buy the PS3 60gb from sonystyle with their credit card I can get it for $499 and get a $150 credit, currently free shipping, 12 months to pay it off, plus they are doing extra points offers on top of the free 5 blurays?
So it would be $349 shipped for a PS3 with 5 blurays a year to pay it off, plus points?

Almost a no-brainer to jump fence into BR.

Good deal, isn't it? I got hit with $41 sales tax but it was still a no-brainer. I have now NHL'07 and wireless controller lined up from Amazon with the gift cards that I saved on this deal. If you need a BR player or PS3 that's a hard deal to beat even with the new CC you have to get.
Gaara

Tax for me is around $30 but the 8pt per $1 spent should close to make up for it, as well as FatWallet offers 3% back for sony purchases, so another $20 or so.
How hard is it to get the card? I have gotten store cards but don't have to long of a credit history (~4yrs).
MikeC78
08-07-2007, 05:15 PM
I got instant approval within minutes online. You'll get a temp number to use immediately.
Not that hard to get the card I believe.
You could also use the points to get free remote.
Add a game and remote to your cart and you should have enough reward points to get a free controller with their 8points for every dollar spend on Sony card.
500 x 8 = 4000 pts
60 x 8 = 480 pts
25 x 8 = 200 pts
Total is 4680 pts, good enough for a Wireless Remote Controller.

everything fails eventually, but sony has just always done me wrong. anything i've ever had sony just flat-out sucked. and i sort of feel their marketing tactics in this current format war are synonymous with bullying. imho. sometimes to win one must be tough, though. yet sometimes they seem deceitful. but that is a whole other argument. move along people, nothing to see here.....:o

Took the plunge last night. Free shippig 8/14 - 8/16. Tax hurt, but there is the $150 rebate in a couple months. Still feel a little dirty spending so much on a machine that I will use to play football and baseball games (only) on. Not sure BlueRay will make much difference becuase we have no HDTVs in the house and it will be a while before we get one since I refuse to have a cable box and I want the 1080 w/ the card the excludes the need for cable box to be around $800 for a 36" - 40" TV. (I know, I will be waiting a while).
At least my movies and sports TV SOUNDS good!;)

believe it or not, friggin' resident evil apocalypse is the movie that got me to convert. there is an hd dvd import of the movie, but i'd rather just give credit to the format who released it here in the states. it will be one of my five free blu-rays. after that, i keep hearing alot about apacalypto, but don't care too much for a completely sub-titled film. avs has their picture quality tier thread. i'm sure i'll pick up at least terminator 2. again, another movie with an hd dvd import counter-part. but i'd rather give proper credit...
just recieved shipping email from sony. fedex delivery date of monday. i think my first purchase will be the bluetooth remote. i know the button layout sucks and it is not backlit and the paint wears off, but i don't want to go the nyko IR route and use my harmony as they still haven't given the ability to turn on/off ps3.

I liked the original resident evil. Came close to getting it. Be sure to post if you think it's good. I've read a lot of positive reviews about apocalypto too but was waiting for it to turn up in bargain bins. Enjoy.
Edit: Oh, and don't forget stuff like underworld and black hawk down. They should be at bargain bin prices or maybe included in the free disks since they're old. Are you set-up for lossless audio over hdmi? I'm still waiting on a good pre. But those uncompressed LPCM tracks are supposed to be really good.
My biggest gripe so far is no component outputs on the PS3. I guess it's time for a HDMI switch with component conversion or new FP (1080p of course). :)

Sami,
The A/V connector is the same one as on the ps2. It accepts component cables made for either system with the A/V connector on one end.
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=1300794&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
What the ps3 lacks is Analog Outs to hook the decoded high def surround tracks into a receiver. You have to use at least hdmi 1.1 into a receiver to get at lossless audio.
