Say I want to make sure my SACD player is dust free and clean..
I see these cleaning cds that they sell but how can that possibly work with digital? Is there a way to insure that stuff stays clean and in good working order? I don't want any degredation of the sound or anything. Do I have to take my player apart?

IMO, those cleaning dics are nothing but a gimmick and don't really work. My cdp is over 12 years old and I've never done anything other than clean the connections on the back with Caig and I have had no issues.
As always YMMV

The only thing that may need cleaning from time to time is the lens. Even that should not be a problem if you keep the dust blown out of your gear. I have never used one of those CD lens cleaners in all the years I have owned CDPs and I have had no problems. If you must clean the lens (because it is not reading the discs) I would recommend using 100% isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab instead of one of those cleaning discs.

Also be very careful as the lens assembly is very delicate. Chances are you won't be able to even get to the lens to clean it without some level of disassembly. Just depends on the player and how things are laid out. Also if it ain't broke don't fix it.

If you spray one of those air cleaners in there wouldn't that just blow the dust around inside?

I figure as long as it still works I'll leave well enough alone. When I do clean things like that I just blow them off. I never recommend touching anything but sometimes I wipe stuff off.

I usually pop the top and use compressed air to clean. Sometimes, I take some deoxit to connectors on back and once in a while clean around inside with cotton swabs.
I have used a 3M / Scotch lense cleaning disc. Has about 10 tiny bristles on the bottom that seem to work. My old Panasonic HTIB was notoriously bad at reading dvds (faulty lense) but the cleaning disc would usually get it up and running.
I haven't tried cleaning the lense internally with swabs or anything. Try not to take moving parts apart unless absolutely necessary.

I've always been reluctant to use the spray can to clean, I want to try it this weekend.

I wouldn't use the spray air. They tend to shoot out moisture if held at the wrong angle. I would also be very carefull about using air pressure of any kind to blow off the lens. Have you ever seen how tiny those wires are?
If it's working, leave it alone.
