Cleaning DVDs. How?

I rent DVDs from netflix and seem to have 30% of the disks skip or freeze at some point during the movie. I then take the disk out and clean it with window cleaner and a new paper towel. Put it back and it works fine 90% of the time.

Does every one have this problem with DVDs?

I never had any problems with a new DVD freezing. Just the netflix rentals.

What would you recommend as a better cleaner?

I use some type of lens cleaner with a microfiber cloth.

I've never had any issues with a regular SD DVD. When I run into any issues with my HD DVD collection, it seems to help the problem.

you also have to wipe it from the inside out, so as not to scratch the surface. in other words, wipe against the grain of the rings, not with them. it will stop seizing of the disc, provided that dirt is the issue.

My HK DVD 25 is extremely finicky. I open up my movie when I rent it at Blockbuster for visual inspection, asking for a trade-out if it looks really bad. Just looking at the movie doesn't always cut it, though, because some imperfections (disc irregularity, burn error, etc.) go unseen to the eye as well.

I clean with rubbing alcohol and cotton ball and dry with soft cloth.

I have a Skip Dr. It cleans up most of your surface scratches in two or three passes (less than 1 minute). Deep scratches are difficult, if not impossible to get out with it. That said, most if not all of my Netflix movies have played perfect after a quick cleaning with the Dr. (I should mention that I only have to use it on the really bad ones, maybe 5% of the ones I get).

An old fashion way is to use car polish on the disc. Use small circular motions with heavy pressure and it takes out most of the light scratches.

I wash in warm soapy dishwater and rinse with warm water. Seems to work quite well as I don't have to scrub them or anything.

BTW, mine have to be really nasty to not play. A layer of chicken grease or similar. :)

Bingo! I have found that this method works best as well.

My Netflix HD DVDs have this problem from time to time and I just use the old soap and water trick too.

I used to do this with great success also. It's just a little inconvient in the HT room. But I could just wash them all after I open the netflix.

I guess the window cleaner isn't very good for DVDs.
