Well, I finally got a 300B int. amp from ASL. SON OF A B....!!!!
This is it. IMO, the 300B is the best sounding tubes I've heard so far. My other amps use EL34, 6V6, 6F6 and the monster 6C33. NONE of them can come close to the tone of 300B. Now I understand why Dr. Harvey Rosenberg (aka Dr. Gizmo) call the 300B KING TONE. The only tube I've heard that can come close in tone is the EL34.
Those who are thinking about trying out SET, should seriously consider the 300B tube. The sound of "directly heated triode" is the most beautiful. The cathode is on the heaters themselves.
I was using another SET amp before the new int. The mono blocks I was using previously put out 20w/ch. That's mega power for a SET amp. I've had the new int. for about a month and haven't hooked the mono blocks back up yet. The 300B is way too addictive. It sounds so much more real. Soundstaging, seperation of instruments, air and tone is superior to my other amps.
The strengths of the 300B tube outweighs the weaknesses. Dynamics is not as powerful, bass don't dig as deep and it has less HF extension. But I'm still satisfied with the bass coming out of the La Scala without a subwoofer. But again, the tone is pure insanity. I never even used the word "tone" before to describe tubes but after hearing the 300B, it made me listen in a different way.
I never thought I'd have this kind of sound quality so soon.
This new int makes me forget that I'm listening to a stereo everytime I listen. I don't even think about tube rolling and upgrading anymore. Well, I'd like to upgrade the Valve Art 300B to some EH but no rush.
So try some 300B based units. You might fall in love with the sound. I've never heard anything like it.
