What wires do i need and from where?

i'll be hooking up an entire HT soon. tv, reciever, amp, dvd, 2 front, 2 rear, 1 sub, 1 center channel. can anyone break down what i need and where you recommend i buy it...wires, power cords, etc...thanks in advance!

I use THX Monster Standard interconnects. These are available online thru amazon or just about any decent local retailer. Lots of choices out there for these types of cables so it just depends on how much you are willing to spend. These cables work well for me but there are some that are even better. As far as speaker wire, I use a relatively inexpensive standard 12 gauge with banana plugs.

I would recommend a quality surge/power center for your system. I'm using a Monster Cable MP HT-800. Check out this guy here on ebay. He's got some decent/inexpensive ones that could do the job for you.

Again, there are others that are better and more costly. But from my experience, the HT-800 works fine.

I second signal cable. And . . . to prove that speaker wire does matter, you could try buying the top speaker wire from Blue Jeans Cable(another respected name around here) and the Ultra Speaker cable from Signal Cable. I gurantee you will hear an obvious difference.

Both Brands are good, but Signal is more near the high-end.

In reference to people who believe good cabling is nonsense, I have a theory. These people want to justify in their minds that they don't need the quality interconnects and speaker wire because they don't have the money to otherwise afford them. I'm not saying cable prices aren't outrageous, but I am saying a $200 investment of cabling from Signal Cable, will blow the best Blue Jeans cable of the same length out of the water. In the world of high-end $200 bucks is laughable.

I have Signal's Ultras and can't say enough good things about them.

As for interconnects, I'm a big fan of Alpha Core's Silver Micro Purl, but they're $$$.

It all comes down to what you can afford.

Buy what you can afford. Signal is very good for the money, with great customer service.

You will need:

-RCA interconnects from your receiver to your amp (one per channel)
-Speaker cables from your amp to your speakers.

All components will bring power cords; get started with those, and down the road you might want to try upgrading.

For DVD & TV it depends on the input/output options you have in your TV, Receiver and DVD.

Most TV's have now HDMI input, though Most receivers don't. If your DVD has an HDMI output, you'll get the best picture quality by connecting directly from the DVD to the TV; if your receiver does have HDMI, you could connect DVD to Receiver and then receiver to TV, but it will require an extra cable. You will need then to connect audio from the DVD into the receiver; you can use a coaxial or optical cable.
You'll need to do a lot of set up in your receiver, best recommendation is to follow the manual.

The monster thx standard stuff is very good bang for your buck, they are well made, have tight gripping connectors, and some nice shielding. If you don't want to deal online I would say the THX stuff is hard to beat for bang for your buck, audio cables for $15/pr and component video for $30.

I would also recommend Heartland Cables and Blue Jeans Cables. I personally use Heartland Cables for most of my system, specifically Belden 89259 with Eichman Bullet Plugs. Dan is very easy to deal with and helped me out a lot when I first got into this hobby, if you look at the testimonials I am JR from CT.
