Am I wrong or is this just a bad design joke? I've always like Mac's blue meter glow, but I have to call BS on the way this product presents itself.

I saw it at CEDIA this past week. Up close, it's rather interesting. I can't figure out if I like it or not. I know I don't for what it most likely retails for!

I agree completely Dennis.
I'm not sure if I like it or not yet, I guess I've have to see it in person. But this is one case where the meter looks out of place.

I really thought Marantz came out with a TT design with their new offering that shines of elegance, taste and respect for melding modern gear with an older technology. They consulted with Clearaudio from what I understand.
I think McIntosh's heritage simply got in the way clear thinking.

The Mac looks to be a direct drive unless there is a motor at the back of the platter which IIRC is a very very poor place for a motor. Ten o'clock or eight o'clock is ideal. Looking back at the Mac pic it seems that there is a belt around the platter but it looks like the motor spindle is behind still.

I'm not sure what to say about what I see but Mac gear always looks like that. I feel someone is trying to keep that alive. Maybe not the right way about going about it, but hey who am I to judge.

I agree it does look odd. Do the meters actually serve any kind of purpose?

Speed indicator.
I could have seen them recessing the platter down into a Mac case so that it would be a stealth piece of gear only accessed from a lid on top and looked like most other Mac fronts, but adding it on top of the case looks strange.

Maybe if the fascia was the same size as the box it wouldn't look so odd. It reminds me of the old phonographs where the platter is inside the box. It look like it needs a lid so that you can carry it away....I don't know.
Mike
The motor is at 10 o'clock.

At first sight,I thought that someone put a cake on top of the amp.

The motor is at 10 o'clock.
How do you know? That belt is so tightly wrapped that there doesn't seem to be any gap approaching 10 o'clock.

Well, more like 2230. :D
2230 Ha ha ha!!! Thanks for the pic!
So besides the 2 foot thick piece of acrylic and the classic Mac fascia, I wonder what makes Mac's design any better or different than any other turntable out there?
I believe it's polished aluminum, not acrylic.

This is off Stereophile's website, RE: Cedia 2007 Show Report;
McIntosh has introduced a turntable. It has the classic black and blue faceplate, which looked a tad bizarre to these eyes. The platter is "polished, fully-balanced green tint," meaning glass, we presume. The tonearm and cartridge are custom-made by McIntosh. An isolated speed stabilizer drives the precision motor.

I saw it up close at CEDIA and it's not much better live, either. But to some, it's the cats meow. Not this cat, though.

I have to agree that they are not doing a\it any justice with the design. I'm sure they could have imparted a Mac look without going to that extreme.
With all of that chassis, I hope it comes with an internal pre. Maybe the meter is for signal...
All that aside, did anyone hear how it performs?
I thought the meter was for rpms.

Forgot where I read it, but yes the Meter Gauge is for speed. I believe there were 4 speeds listed. I looked for the link but couldn't find it and couldn't find the similar thread about this over at Klipsch. Most of the Klipschy's felt the same way.....!UGLY
