There are rumors floating around about a $399 40GB PS3 SKU to be released before the holiday season bundled with Spiderman 3.

IMO this has been the PLAN all along.


This Xmas is make or break not for the PS3......

But for Blu-Ray.

PS3 is the Blu-Ray trojan horse. PS3 will get Blu-Ray in millions of homes much easier than a stand alone player.

There was that poll not to long ago that 60% of PS3 owners dont even know the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player.
Bundling the PS3 with Spiderman 3 will let all PS3 owners know about the wonderful Blu-Ray capabilities.

The Blu-Ray Association, has bought end-caps in Target stores for this holiday season. Which will display the PS3 as well as a stand alone player.
Disney has launched a nationwide shopping mall tour to display Blu-Ray.

A $399 PS3 would mean a HUGE increase in sales, and adding Spiderman 3 on Blu-Ray will raise Blu-Ray awareness ten-fold.

Finally another reason for the Spiderman 3 bundling and why I think its been planned all along to happen this way is....

The spiderman font on the PLAYSTATION 3.

Lowering the price on the PS3 means loss on each system sold. But by getting Blu-Ray playeyers into homes means the loss will be made up VERY quickly.
That is why lowering the PS3 price and eating a loss isnt important to Sony. Losing with Blu-Ray is much more of a loss than losing another $100 per PS3 sold.

plus we all know that MGS4 will port to XBox sometime or another, they've ported Metal Gear Solid to PC and Gamecube, It's looking rough for the PS3 right now.

i hear halo 3 is going to be just like two. you know, just a bit better graphics, one or two new weapons, maps. same thing. tired.
wonder if it'll ring true. But ps3 has serious promise, something 360 doesn't. i just think that it's a better BUY all around. you get FREE wi-fi, FREE bluetooth, FREE (reletively, considering price) BlueRay, FREE USB ports to plug in that nifty phone, so you can upload your drunken friends on YouTube...i mean, seriously, does xbox offer ANY of this stuff that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

Anyways, I would seriously consider getting the PS3 at $400 so long as it retained its BluRay functionality. A couple more must have titles wouldn't hurt Sony's cause either.

It's funny that people always trumpet those two titles as the potential saviors of the PS3's weak lineup. Not that I'm bashing the PS3... but the original Killzone? Not that good of a game. You're banking on a sequel to a game that wasn't really that good. MGS4, if we're being honest, is a bit of a niche title, considering that every other MGS title was a niche title.

I think people are vastly overestimating the effect that these particular games will have on sales, just as I think they did with Lair. These aren't franchises that will push consoles for them, outside of the die-hard Sony fans who were going to buy one anyway.

Regardless, I don't think we'll see a $399 bundle this year... or even a $399 standalone unit. Sony's cost of production, even after the ramp-up of BD diodes, is still too high for them to incur a further per-unit loss. They've taken a lot of heat from shareholders over the step backwards that their gaming division took this year, and they can't afford to piss off their shareholders any more right now. Besides, it hasn't been that long since their last so-called "price drop" (though it was basically a strategy to clear out old stock), so historically they won't be dropping the price again so soon.

Yeah, Killzone 2 looks great... but I think we can agree that a game can look absolutely amazing and still suck. I think the first wave of 360 games proved that.

As far as November goes, it's a good month for both 360 and PS3 owners, especially since the majority of titles are being released on both platforms. I know I'm gonna' stay BROKE for the rest of the year.

But don't hold your breath on that 40gb unit, man. Mike clearly said it was a rumor in that Kotaku piece, and even went so far as to say, "Until then, grain of salt people." There has been zero confirmation that we're going to see a 40gb SKU this year. Considering that the hard drive isn't the main cost of the PS3 for Sony, I seriously doubt a PS3 will drop at that price this year unless it is gimped in some other way to cut costs. Remember... Sony is STILL losing money on every unit sold.

No, I haven't had a compelling reason to get a PS3 yet. The 360 has all the games I'm interested in so far. If it weren't for the format war, I might get a PS3 just to play Blu-ray discs... but for now, there's nothing PS3 exclusive that pushes me over the edge.

Plus, I freakin' hate the Sixaxis. My hands are too big for it, and I wish they had redesigned the form factor instead of just leaving the analog stick placement of the Dualshock.

Not that I'm being a fanboy, 'cause I'm brand agnostic. I just haven't had a good reason to buy one YET.

Well you may see a spike in sales when the PS3 gets hacked. And it is looking like that might be near the end of the year or a bit sooner.

Funny thing is Sony basically used the same type of software that they used for the PSP. So most hackers are using the same functionality like they do for a PSP. Basically you download the game, and use an ISO loader to load it just like the PSP.
